  • Operational orbit determination (OOD) depends on the capability of generating accurate prediction of spacecraft ephemeris in a short period. The predicted ephemeris is used in the operations such as instrument pointing and orbit maneuvers. In this study the orbit prediction problem consists of the estimating diverse arc length orbit using GPS navigation data, the predicted orbit for the next 48 hours, and the fitted 30-hour arc length orbits of double differenced GPS measurements for the predicted 48-hour period. For 24-hour orbit arc length, the predicted orbit difference from truth orbit was 205 meters due to the along-track error. The main error sources for the orbit prediction of the Low Earth Orbiter (LEO) satellite are solar pressure and atmosphere density.

  • In this paper, a generalized Adams-Moulton method that is a $m$-step method derived by using the Taylor's series is proposed to solve the satellite orbit determination problem. We show that our proposed method has produced much smaller error than the original Adams-Moulton method. Finally, the accuracy performance is demonstrated in the satellite orbit correction problem by giving a numerical example.

  • In this paper, we investigate a generalization of the Adams-Bashforth method by using the Taylor's series. In case of m-step method, the local truncation error can be expressed in terms of m - 1 coefficients. With an appropriate choice of coefficients, the proposed method has produced much smaller error than the original Adams-Bashforth method. As an application of the generalized Adams-Bashforth method, the accuracy performance is demonstrated in the satellite orbit prediction problem. This implies that the generalized Adams-Bashforth method is applied to the orbit prediction of a low-altitude satellite. This numerical example shows that the prediction of the satellite trajectories is improved one order of magnitude.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite orbital mechanics, and then to propose a novel long-term GPS satellite orbit prediction scheme including virtual planet perturbation. The GPS orbital information is a necessary prerequisite to pinpointing the location of a GPS receiver. When a GPS receiver has been shut down for a long time, however, the time needed to fix it before its reuse is too long due to the long-standing GPS orbital information. To overcome this problem, the GPS orbital mechanics was studied, such as Newton's equation of motion for the GPS satellite, including the non-spherical Earth effect, the luni-solar attraction, and residual perturbations. The residual perturbations are modeled as a virtual planet using the least-square algorithm for a moment. Through the modeling of the virtual planet with the aforementioned orbital mechanics, a novel GPS orbit prediction scheme is proposed. The numerical results showed that the prediction error was dramatically reduced after the inclusion of virtual planet perturbation.

  • We have carried out high precision orbit calculation, by using various numerical techniques with accuracy of higher than fourth order, in order for exact prediction on position and velocity of celestial bodies and artificial satellites. General second order ordinary differential equation has been solved numerically to test the performance for each of numerical methods. We have compared computed values with exact solution obtained by using universal variables for two body problem and discussed overall results of numerical methods used in our calculation. As a result, it is found that high order difference table method called as Gauss-Jackson method is best one with easiness and efficiency in the increase of accuracy by number of initial values.

  • Contamination has the potential for degrading the performance of the optical payload beyond the limits defined by mission requirements, therefore it must be considered a risk to system performance and must be mitigated. To mitigate contamination problem, contamination budget is allocated according to the contamination requirements which is derived from contamination effect analysis. Once the contamination budget is allocated, prediction for on-ground and in-orbit contaminants amounts and cleanliness control is performed. In this article, typical contamination control for observation satellite is described.

  • Prior to launch, simulated radiances of the Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) will be very useful to guess the real imagery of OSMI and to check the data processing system for OSMI. The data processing system for OSMI which is one sensor of Korea Mult i - Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) scheduled for launch in 1999 is being developed based on the SeaWiFS Data Analysis System (SeaDAS). Such a simulation should include the spectral bands, orbital and scanning characteristics of the OSMI and KOMPSAT spacecraft. The simulation is also very helpful for finding and preparing for problem areas before launch. This paper describes a method to create simulated radiances of the OSMI over the oceans. Our method for constructing a simulated OSMI imagery is to propagate a KOMPSAT orbit over a field of Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) pigment values and to use the values and atmospheric components to calculate total radiances. A modified Brouwer - Lyddane model with drag was used for the realistic orbit prediction, the CZCS pigment data were used to compute water - leaving radiances, and a variety of radiative transfer models were used to calculate atmospheric contributions to total radiances detected by OSMI. Imagery of the simulated OSMI total radiances for 6 nominal bands was obtained. As expected, water - leaving radiances were only a small fraction of total radiances and sun glint contaminations were observed near the solar declination. Therefore, atmospheric correction is very important in the calculation of pigment concentration from total radiances. Because the imagery near the sun's glitter pattern is virtually useless and must be discarded, more advanced mission planning will be required.
