  • Crude chondroitin sulfates extracted from midduck tunics (Styela clava) and munggae tunics (Halocynthia roretzi) were examined in vivo in order to be utilized as a cosmetic material which was followed by an in vitro assay. Examinations, such as acute oral toxicity, skin sensitization, acute eye irritation, and primary skin irritation, were peformed with a variety of laboratory animals. Phototoxic and photosensitization tests were not conducted since all chondroitin sulfates failed to absorb U.V. light at the range of 280 to 420 nm. In acute dermal and eye irritation, both specific clinical signs and dead cases were not demonstrated during the test period, but crude chondroitin sulfates from midduck and munggae tunics, and standard chondroitin sulfate from bovine trachea were showed 2.5, 1 and 1.25 of acute ocular irritation index (A.O.I.), respectively. In the case of skin sensitization, crude chondroitin sulfate from midduck tunics exhibited neither specific clinical signs nor dead cases in the entire course of the examination. While in acute oral toxicity, crude chondroitin sulfates from both midduck and munggae tunics found neither specific clinical signs nor dead cases during the test, and LD50 was suspected to be over 2 g/kg. Based on this study, it was proven that crude chondroitin sulfates from either midduck or munggae tunics can be used safely as a cosmetic material.

  • The authors reviewed the etiology and essential treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The principal etiology was thought to the the myospasm of masticatory musculatures by stress (major cause) and dental irritation. Therefore, we attempted to control the myospasm by stress management, isometric exercise and regular daily physical exercises (walking, Jogging, bycycling, rope skipping, swimming & gymnastic exercise). The result was more favorable (95% success rate) without recurrence in 123 patients, who was referred to our department of dentistry(Oral & Maxillofacial surgery), Wonju Christian Hospital.

  • During surgical procedures, unexpected material, including surgical instruments and tissue segments, may get lost in the surgical field. Most of these should be immediately removed to prevent further complications, such as vital organ irritation, infection, and inflammatory pseudo-tumor formation. However, it is not always easy to define the exact location of the foreign body, especially if the item is very small and/or it is embedded in the soft tissue of the head and neck region. Intraoperative real-time radiological imaging with C-arm fluoroscopy can be useful to trace the three-dimensional location of small and embedded foreign bodies in the oral and maxillofacial area. We describe an unusual case of an embedded micro-screw in the intrinsic tongue muscle that had been dropped into the sublingual space during a lower alveolar bone graft procedure. The lost foreign body was accurately identified with C-arm fluoroscopy and safely removed without any further complications.

  • Three 1,2-benzothiazine derivatives were synthesized, and their analgesic / anti-inflammatory efficacy and their effect s of gastric irritation were evaluated. Among the three compounds, 39 exhibited the most potent anlagesic action, but the effect was weaker than that of piroxicam. Nonetheless, the compound showed 4 times more potent analgesic action with less gastric damage than did ibuprofen. These compounds did not show anti-inflammatory effect at an oral dose of 5 mg/kg.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect a chewable tablet containing sodium flouride and lauroyl sodium sulfate on removing plaque and inhibiting gingival inflammation. A randomized parallel study was designed. 100 voluteers participated in the study. There were two test groups each with 30 subject. Test group A was instructed to brush once in the morning, and to use the tablet once in the afternoon and once in the evening. Test group B was instructed to use the tablet three times a day without brushing. There were two control groups each with 20 subjects. Control group A was instructed to brush once in the morning only. Control group B was instructed not to brush all. Two weeks before the test period, the subjects received through tooth cleaning and polishing. At baseline, GI, PI, BOP, and GCF of the Ramfjord teeth were measured in all groups. Bacteria culture was done with the plaque sampled from tooth with the deepest pocket. After 5 days, clinical indices were measured and the bacterial culture was repeated. Control group B was dropped from the study after this period. All the other groups remained and the indices and the culture was repeated after 2 weeks, and 3weeks. Also whether the oral mucosa showed signs of irritation was monitored throughout the test period. Test group A showed less PI, GI, BOP, probing depth, GCF than test group B or control group A. Especially, PI and the BOP was significantly less than that of the group that was instructed to brush once a day. This implies that the added use of this tablet aids in plaque removal in people who brush just once a day. Test group A showed increase of cocci, decrease of motile rods, and decrease of spirochetes after 14-21 days. And this was significantly different from the control group A. At no time of the test period did any of the subjects show signs of irritation of the oral mucosa or adverse reactions. Following conclusions could be obtained from this study. This chewable tablet for enhanced oral hygiene could be used as an adjunct to oral hygiene in people who do not brush adequately. The use of this tablet decreased the number of subgingival bacteria, and this could be effective in plaque removal and for prevention of gingival inflammation.

  • The evaluation of the anti-inflammatory analgesic and antipyretic activities of loxoprofen sodium given in intramuscular route was investigated as compared to oral application in rats and mice. The intramuscular $ED_{50}$ values of loxoprofen sodium in carrageenan edema and vascular permeability tests are 1.15 and 7.8 mg/kg, respectively, which represent more potent than in case of oral application. Its therapeutic effects in adjuvant arthritis were shown at 6 mg/kg l.m. and 3mg/kg p.o. Analgesic effect was shown to be more potent as given intramuscularly. Similar potency of antipyretic effects was shown in both administration routes. Considerably weak gastric damages were observed in intramuscular application.

  • Carbamide peroxide is usually used for vital teeth bleaching at home. Complications such as tooth hypersensitivity and/or gingival irritation are frequently reported. Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate any possible histological changes in pulp and periodontal tissue by carbamide peroxide bleaching gel in rats. 10% and 15% carbamide peroxide containing nightguard for upper molar were worn for 4 hours a day. The rats were sacrificed after 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days and 6 days application of carbamide peroxide respectively. The results were as follows : Mild infiltration of inflammatory changes below the junctional epithelium and hyperplasia of epithelium were observed in both 10% and 15% carbamide peroxide treated groups. In all experimental groups, odontoblasts were changed from columnar to cuboidal shape and/or obliterated and the focal loss of predentin was observed in pulp horn. With increasing time of application, these changes were more remarkable, but limited in pulp horn. Inflammatory reactions, vacuolar changes and hyaline degenerations of the pup tissue were also observed in some cases. These results suggested that carbamide peroxide gel used in home bleaching could cause reversible pulpal irritation.

  • Due to the syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, the subway passenger cabin should be continuously sterilized. However, a disinfectant such as chlorine is toxic and can lead to different issues to human health. In this paper, we introduced a novel disinfectant based on natural product (Dendropanax morbifera extract). Via ultra-high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS), different compounds from Dendropanax morbifera extract showed antivirus potentials. Antimicrobial experiments confirmed that the air-disinfectant containing Dendropanax morbifera can eliminate harmful microorganisms including Gram (-), Gram (+), and yeast within 5 mins. The as-prepared air-disinfectant also showed high antivirus activity against H1N1, HRV, and EV71. Deodorization test also indicates that the as-prepared air-disinfectant can lower the harmful gas such as ammonia and trimethylamine in the atmosphere. To evaluate the potential of air-disinfectant containing Dendropanax morbifera in practical applications, different safety tests including acute oral toxicity, acute skin irritation, and eye irritation were conducted. Results showed that the as-prepared disinfectant did not negatively affect tested animals during these safety investigations.
