  • This report was concerned with the isolation and identification of bacterial flora in the human dental plaque and the dextransucrase activity of isolated species. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The bacterial flora, isolated from the human dental plaque, was identified as 3 species of resembling streptococci, Streptococcus salivarius strain SD-1, Streptococcus bacilli, Lactobacillus brevis strain SD-3, Lactobacillus acidophilus strain SD-2 and SD-7, resembling Staphylococcus sp, and one species of resembling Leuconostoc mesenteroides strain SD-6. 2. The dextransucrase activites of resembling Streptococcus mitis strain SD-9 and Streptococcus salivarius strain SD-1 were exhibited the highest among the isolated species of human dental plaque.

  • Titanium(Ti) alloys has been mostly concerned with biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and biofunctionality. However, very little is known, about the biological effects of titanium on microorganism and in particular on the oral flora. So, the effect of titanium on the in vitro growth of oral microorganism forming dental caries was studied under either aerobic or anaerobic condition. In this study, the mostly bacterial species commonly found in dental plaque or gingival sulcus grew well in an aqueous medium containing $100{\mu}g/ml$ of titanium standard solution.

흡연자와 비흡연자간의 구강 내 세균 분포 및 항균제 감수성 (Distribution and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Bacteria in the Oral Cavity of Smokers or Non-Smokers)

  • 흡연은 음주와 더불어 치과질환을 유발하는 원인인자로 알려져 있으나, 흡연자와 비흡연자간의 구강 내 분포하는 미생물을 조사한 연구는 현재 매우 미비한 상태이다. 본 연구에서는 흡연자 30명, 비흡연자 30명으로 나누어 구강 내 분포하는 세균을 분리하고 혈액한천배지에서 배양하였다. 분리된 병원성 세균은 Kirby-Bauer 항생제 감수성 검사 방법으로 항생제에 대한 감수성 및 내성을 검사하였다. 각각의 콜로니는 그람 염색을 하였고 자동 동정기인 VITEK을 이용하여 동정하였다. 그람 염색법을 이용한 결과 흡연자의 구강에서는 총 41개 균주가 분리되었고, 그 중 그람 양성 구균 63%, 그람 음성 구균 29%, 그람 양성 간균 3%, 그람 음성 간균 5%가 나타났고, 비흡연자의 구강에서는 총 38개 균주가 분리되었고 그 중 그람 양성 구균 55%, 그람 음성 구균 26%, 그람 양성 간균 3%, 그람 음성 간균 16%가 나타났다. VITEK system을 이용하여 세균의 특이적 분포를 조사한 결과 흡연자의 구강에서는 Streptococcus mutans (6/41), Gemella morillorum (6/41), Streptococcus oralis (2/41), Streptococcus pneumoniae (1/41), Staphylococcus aureus (3/41), Streptococcus anginosus (1/41), Streptococcus intermedius (1/41), Streptococcus uberis (1/41), and Streptococcus sanguinis (1/41) 반면 비흡연자의 구강에서는 Streptococcus sanguinis (8/38), Staphylococcus aureus (1/38), Staphylococcus auricularis (1/38), Streptococcus uberis (1/38), Streptococcus intermedius (1/38), Streptococcus mutans (1/38), and Streptococcus oralis (1/38)로 나타났다. 3명의 흡연자에서 분리된 S. aureus는 Beta-lactamase를 분비하는 MRSA로 동정된 반면 비흡연자 한 명에서 분리된 S. aureus는 Beta-lactamase를 분비하지 않고 methicilin에 감수성을 보였다. 흡연자와 비흡연자의 상재균은 다른 분포를 보였고 특히 G. morillorum와 MRSA가 흡연자의 구강에서 흔히 발견됨을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과들은 흡연자의 구강질환을 예방 및 치료에 유용할 것으로 사료된다.

Isolation and Identification of Candida dubliniensis and Distribution of Candida spp. from Oral Cavity of Healthy People

  • Candida spp. are yeast form fungi, which cause an opportunistic infections in a immune suppressed patients however it is a normal flora of the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, and the urogenital system of healthy person. It is investigated that the distribution of Candida spp. cause an oral disease from oral cavity of healthy people and also identified Candia dubliniensis. Distribution and identification of the yeast form fungi in oral cavities of healthy people was investigated by an automatic identifier, VITEK2 system. We found 21 strains of Candida albicans, 3 strains of Candida famata, one strain of Candida tropicalis, Candida haemulonii, Candida krusei, and Candida dubliniensis. In addition, one strain of Cryptococcus spp., Saccharomyces spp., and two unknown strains were isolated. Candida dubliniensis which forms a mass by more than 2 chlamydospores was isolated from a healthy person for the first time. Candida dubliniensis was not grown at $42^{\circ}C$ whereas Candida albicans was grown well. It is known that Candida dubliniencis was isolated in AIDS while it is found in healthy people from this study, which will be helpful to investigate the distribution of Candida spp.

안면화상으로 인한 골수염의 치험예 (A CASE REPORT ON THE TREATMENT OF OSTEOMYELITIS DUE TO FACIAL BURN)

  • The most common and the most serious complication of the burn is infection, which is to a certain extent inevitable in the light of present knowledge and experience. From the burn wound as a rule there may be cultured at any given time the prevailing flora of the individual patient and of the hospital attendants and ward environ ment. Even without contamination from outside sources, organisms embedded in hair follicles and sweat glands survive the sterilizing effects of heat and serve as potential sources of localized and systemic infection. With necrotic tissue serving as nutrient material for pathogens there may occur, in succession, cellulitis, extending necrosis, lymphangitis and final septicemia. This is to report a case of osteomyelitis due to facial burn of 32 year old Korean male. The authors treated the patient by curettage and thin split thickness skin graft. The post operative course was uncomplicated and result was excellent.

  • Proliferation of abnormal hematopoietic cells with impaired differentiation, regulation and programmed cell death leads to leukemia. AML(acute myeloid leukemia) is a malignancy with malfunction of myeloid hematopoietic cells with acute behavior. The oral manifestations of the disease are posterior palate hemorrhage, gingival bleeding and gingival ulceration as a result of infection by normal oral flora and gingival infiltration by leukemic cells. A 49-year-old male patient was referred from local dental clinic. The patient was diagnosed with AML FAB M1 (acute myeloid leukemia French-American-British classification M1 myeloblastic leukemia without maturation). The oral infection focus was removed by a conservative treatment. 2 days after the dental treatment, the patient underwent chemotherapy. At 8-month follow-up, the overall outcome was excellent. Oral manifestations of AML are often the first indications of the malignancy. Therefore it is essential for dentists, especially oral and maxillofacial surgeons, to be aware of the diagnostic signs and complications associated with leukemia for better diagnosis and subsequent treatment and management.

  • Submental or submandibular intubation has been reported to cause fewer complications than tracheostomy. However, the risk of infection is always inherent because oral wounds are exposed to microbial flora and bacteria in the oral cavity. A novel technique of submandibular intubation was devised to reduce infection and injury to the soft tissues. We would like to report a novel safe technique that can be performed in patients requiring submental or submandibular intubation. This is the first report of submandibular intubation using a sterile disposable camera cable drape. This novel technique of submandibular intubation is safer, more sterile, easier, and less invasive than conventional submandibular intubation.

Prebiotic Effects of Poly-Gamma-Glutamate on Bacterial Flora in Murine Gut

  • Prebiotics improve the growth or activities of specific microbial genera and species in the gut microbiota in order to confer health benefits to the host. In this study, we investigated the effect of poly-gamma-glutamate (${\gamma}-PGA$) as a prebiotic on the gut microbiota of mice and the organ distributions of ${\gamma}-PGA$ in mice. Pyrosequencing analysis for 16S rRNA genes of bacteria indicated that oral administration of ${\gamma}-PGA$ increased the abundance of Lactobacillales while reducing the abundance of Clostridiales in murine guts. It is suggested that oral administration of ${\gamma}-PGA$ can be helpful for modulating the gut microbiota as a prebiotic.

PCR based Detection of Helicobacter spp. in Saliva, Dental plaque, Vomitus and Feces of Dogs

  • This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter spp. in privately owned pet dog's oral cavity samples (saliva, dental plaque, vomitus) and fecal samples in Korea and to evaluate the potential route for transmission. Total 100 patients dogs attending one Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital were examined by Helicobacter genus-specific PCR assay and these dogs were divided into two groups whether they had gastrointestinal signs (vomiting, nausea and diarrhea) or not. The total detection rate of Helicobacter spp. by PCR in saliva, dental plaque and fecal samples was 23%, 1% and 68% respectively. The difference of prevalence with regarding the gastrointestinal sings was not significant. In vomitus, two of seven samples had positive results. These results suggested that Helicobacter spp. are present in the oral cavity although they were present in very low number and are not like to be normal oral flora of the oral cavity and Helicobacter spp. in dogs could be transmitted through oral-oral, gastrooral and fecal-oral route.

사람 악골골수염 병소에서 분리된 Cutibacterium acnes KCOM 1315의 유전체 염기서열 완전 해독 (Complete genome sequence of Cutibacterium acnes KCOM 1315 isolated from a human jaw osteomyelitis lesion)

  • Cutibacterium acnes는 사람의 피부, 결막, 장관, 외이도 및 구강의 정상 세균 총의 하나이다. 이 세균 종은 여드름, 심내막염 감염, 유육종증, 뇌 농양, 치주염 및 골수염과 관련된 기회감 염성병원균으로 확인되었다. C. acnes KCOM 1315 (= ChDC KB81)는 사람 악골골수염 병소로부터 분리되었다. 여기에서 C. acnes KCOM 1315 균주 완전 유전체 염기서열을 해독하여 보고한다.
