  • Objects : In this study, I aimed to determine the size and administration Method of pills preparation in Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases. Methods : I investigated the Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, Newly Revised Materia Medica, Variorum of the Classic of Materia Medica, The Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia, and recent studies. Results : There were four kinds of pills preparation. Each size of pill preparation was equal to the Odongja, Tanwhan, Yolk, and quarter of daily dosage of Decoction. One pill of Tanwhan was equivalent to 16 pills of Odongja, and one Yolk was equal to 40 pills of Odongja. The Diameter of Odongja was 6.5 mm, Tanwhan was 16.37897 mm, and Yolk was 22.11484 mm. Jeodangwhan was equal to one quarter daily dosage of Jeodangtang. Maximum size to swallow with water was Odongja and daily dosage, which was 16 pills, includes one square-inch-spoon of powder preparation. When we made the pill preparation, it is difficult to make 16 pills using one square-inch-spoon of powder. Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing made one dosage started from 10 pills to 20 pills to find out optimum dose. Due to the difficulty of making precise size of pills and considerable amount of daily dosage, there was no smaller size than Odongja. When the size of Pill preparation was larger than Odongja, it was ground or boiled slightly to make suspensions. Conclusions : These results suggest that the sizes of Pill preparation in the Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases were true compared with reality.

  • In public water supply systems, Alum and/or PAC being used as a coagulant. It is well known that their use increased frequently the concentration of residual aluminum in filtered water upon operating conditions. This study was conducted to find the optimum conditions that both the concentration of residual aluminum and turbidity are minimized by changing such factors as pH, temperature, alum dosage, mixing rate, alkalinity and hardness. The results can be summarized as follows: The pH values for the minimum concentration of residual aluminum and turbidity as a given experimental condition were found at pH 6 and pH 7 respectively, the apparent clarity was best at pH 8. The floc settling rate was the greatest at pH 6.5, but the turbidity was high at the same condition. The more alum dosage, the higher the concentration of residual aluminum. However the alum dosage less than 15 mg/l tend to decrease in turbidity. Restabilization and enmeshment occurred near 15 mg/l and 20 mg/l of alum dose respectively. With the increase of mixing rate (rapid and slow), the concentration of residual aluminum and turbidity are increased and the same trend was found in increment of mixing time. At low water temperature, the concentration of residual aluminum was decreased, but turbidity was increased. It was confirmed that alkalinity had an effect on the coagulation efficiency, but hardness did not.

  • This article describes laboratory research done on strength evaluations for stabilized samples made of tropical fibrous peat. The stabilizing agents used were ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as binding agent and blast furnace slag (BFS) as additive. Stabilized samples were tested for their strength through unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR). Different dosage rates of OPC and BFS were used in trial and error experiments for the most effective combination for stabilized peat samples that were at their natural moisture content. Stabilized trial samples were air cured for 90 days. After detecting the most effective dosage rate in the trial samples, their values were used to prepare CBR samples at their optimum moisture content (OMC). CBR samples were then air cured from 1 to 90 days and tested under un-soaked and soaked conditions. The most effective dosage rate for the stabilized peat samples was found to be close to when 75% for OPC and 25% of BFS per total weight of OPC, and BFS. As an example, if 11.25% OPC, and 3.75% BFS are mixed with peat and compacted at their OMC and air cured for 90 days, stabilized peat will have an increase in CBR of 0.8% to 45 % for un-soaked and 20% for soaked conditions.

  • This study aimed at improving the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic degradation of HA. In this study, the Degradation of Humic Acid using Jeju Scoria Coated with $WO_3/TiO_2$ in the presence of UV irradiation was investigated as a function of different experimental condition : photocatalyst dosage, $Ca^{2+}\;and\;HCO_{3}_{-}$ addition and pH of the solution. Photodegradation efficiency increased with increasing photocatalyst dosage, the optimum catalyst dosage is 2.5 g/L and Photodegradation efficiency is maximized to $WO_3/TiO_2=3/7$. This indicates that $WO_3$ retains a much higher Lewis surface acidity than $TiO_2,\;and\;WO_3$ has a higher affinity for chemical species having unpaired electrons. The addtion of cation($Ca^{2+}$) in water increased the photodegradaion efficiency. But the addtion of $HCO_{3}^{-}$ ion in water decreased a photodegradation efficiency. Photodegradation efficiency increased with decreasing pH < pzc, the electrostatic repulsion between the HA and the surface of $TiO_2$ decreased.

  • The advanced oxidation process (AOP) using ozone combined with hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet treatment were evaluated for biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (EDOC) formation and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. Oxidation treatment were conducted alone or combination with ozone, hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet processes. Ozone dosage of ozone process was varied from $0.5mg/l{\ell}\cdot}min$ to $5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$. Ozone/hydrogen peroxide process was done using $20mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ of hydrogen peroxide concentration. Ozone/ultraviolet process was irradiated with $12mW/cm^2$ of density and 254nm. Ozone dosage was varied from $0.5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ to $5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ at the ozone/hydrogen peroxide and ozone/ultraviolet processes too. Contact time of all the process was 20 minutes. Oxidation treatment were performed on microfiltration effluent samples. BDOC formation was reached to an optimum at ozone dosage of $1.5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ in the ozone/hydrogen peroxide process and $1mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ in ozone/ultraviolet process, after which BDOC formation was decreased at higher ozone dosages. But BDOC formation was increased with ozone dosages increasing in ozone process. The efficiency of DOC removal was higher AOPs than ozone process. Ozone/ultraviolet proces was the highest for DOC removal efficiency in each process. THMFP. removal efficiency by ozone/ultraviolet process was higher than that by each of ozone process and ozone/hydrogen peroxide process.

  • The consecutive combination process of a biological process as the pre-treatment and a chemical process as the post-treatment is applied for the dyeing wastewater. The poor efficiency of biological treatment using pure oxygen makes the chemical treatment cost high. It is necessary to improve the efficiency of biological treatment in order to reduce the cost of chemical treatment. The purpose of this paper is to find the minimum dose of chemical reagent to fit the Discharged Water Quality Standards for the different biological treatment effluents. Results revealed that the minimum dosage of Fenton's reagent lead to save the cost of chemical treatment based on the guideline dose in the treatment plant. The possible maximum saving reagents was up to $70\%$ for the effluent of the pilot plant packed with the carrier imbedded microorganisms which were selected from the present treatment plant.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine applicability of waste egg shells as conditioning agent, to determine the optimum conditions for improving digested sludge dewaterability and to compare with before and after adding them. It estimated that the optimum conditions were dosage 30 g/L, particle size 10mesh, temp. $30^{\circ}C$, pH 7 and dewatering pressure $2.66{\pm}10^4{\;}N/m^2$. On the basis of induced optimum conditions, if adding waste egg shells in digested sludge, its specific resistance was $1.13{\pm}10^{12}{\;}m/kg$ and was low about 3 times than raw digested sludge $3.5{\pm}10^{12}{\;}m/kg $. Therefore, in view of waste recycling, it seemed that we could utilize waste egg shells as conditioning assent for improving dewaterability of digested sludge.

  • In this paper, the properties of high-strength concrete are described with respect to materials and mix conditions(water-cement ratio, chemical admixture, replacement of fly ash). As primary purposes of this study, the optimum mix design method of high-strength concrete to decrease unit cement contents is investigated, and the properties of fresh and hardened concretes are tested in terms of slump, air content and compressive strength. As results of this study, workability and strength development of the high-strength concrete depend on the water-cement ratio, replacement ratio of fly ash and dosage of the chemical admixture. The conditions which are proposed optimum mix design of the high-strength concrete show W/C 37%, S/A 42~45% and unit cement content 470~480kg/$\textrm{m}^3$. Based on the results, the applicability of high-strength concrete in site is clearly proved.

  • There are a wide variety of semi-solid ointments used for healing the skin diseases, whose therapeutic and skin penetration abililties may greatly differ from one another depending on the compositions of ointment vehicles. A computer optimization technique was applied to obtain the optimum formula of o/w type ointment giving the in vitro maximum absorption rate through hairless rat skin membrane. Some of the formulations were selected to find out a relationship between skin penetration of ointment and its Theological characteristics. The experimental value of absorption rate obtained from the ointment by optimum formula agreed well with the theoretical value obtained from a polynomial regression analysis, Three kinds of ointments selected among 15 formulations were obtained with a concentric cylinder type rheometer (Model; Rheolab SM-HM Physica, Germany) at 20, 30, 40 and $50^{\circ}C$ for rheograms of rhelolgical properties of o/w type ointments. As the temperature was raised, all products showed a decrease in both shear stress and yield values. The higher skin penetration, the lower shear stress showed.

  • The photochemical decolorization of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water has been carried out by photo-Fenton process. The effect of applied $H_2O_2$, $Fe^{2+}$ dose, solution pH and UV dose have been studied. The influence of constituent processes of photo-Fenton such as UV, $H_2O_2$ and Fenton has been investigated. Comparison of RhB removal was made between the photo-Fenton and $UV/H_2O_2$ process. The results obtained showed that the optimum dosage of $Fe^{2+}$ and $H_2O_2$ were 0.0031 mmol and 0.625 mol, respectively. pH 3 is found to be the optimum pH of for photo-Fenton process. pH and UV dose strongly influenced the decolorization of RhB in photo-Fenton process. The photo-Fenton and $UV/H_2O_2$ processes showed similar decolorization and seem to be appropriate for the decolorization of dye wastewater.
