Since the 1990's the fleet of the Dutch Railways showed a dramatic decrease in wheel tyre life. This lifetime reduction led to an unacceptable increase in life cycle costs. Therefore Lloyd's Register Rail has proposed to NedTrain to investigate the possibilities of improving the wheel tyre life. Three improvements were determined as most promising and relatively easy to achieve: - Profile optimisation for Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) reduction - a new wheel profile has been developed with a better resistance against rolling contact fatigue of the wheel tread. The profile has been implemented on single deck intercity trains and shows an increase in wheel tyre life of 30%. - Selection of improved wheel tyre materials - combining information from literature and experiences of manufacturers five alternative wheel tyre materials have been selected and are now being tested in practice. - Optimisation of the maintenance strategy - an alternative, preventative maintenance regime has been developed. With this Scraping regime, during short term maintenance every wheel is reprofiled. Higher mileages are reached and savings on life cycle costs up to 50% and more have been achieved. Unplanned maintenance goes down with $30{\sim}60%$. The results from field tests, using a reference group for comparison, and preliminary results after implementation show that the increase in wheel tyre life that is achieved with this project is significant. The results will continue to be monitored using the asset management tool 'Wheel Watch', that was specially developed for this project and is also described in this paper.

Lessons learnt incorporated into next generation of trains.
This paper presents the extended interaction prediction method for large scale discrete-time systems with interconnected state and control. Feedback gain is obtained from decentralized calculation without solving Riccati equation. Hence, Computer storage and calculation time is reduced.
Multiobjective Optimisation problem involving set functions is introduced. Then an iterative algorithm for these kinds of problems is suggested and its optimal process will be proved.
The tailoring optimization technique recently developed by the author for improving structural response and energy absorption of composites is extended to sandwich shells using a previously developed zig-zag shell model with hierarchic representation of displacements. The in-plane variation of the stiffness properties of plies and the through-the thickness variation of the core properties are determined solving the Euler-Lagrange equations of an extremal problem in which the strain energy due to out-of-plane strains and stresses is minimised, while that due to their in-plane counterparts is maximised. In this way, the energy stored by unwanted out-of-plane modes involving weak properties is transferred to acceptable in-plane modes. As shown by the numerical applications, the critical interlaminar stress concentrations at the interfaces with the core are consistently reduced without any bending stiffness loss and the strength to debonding of faces from the core is improved. The structural model was recently developed by the author to accurately describe strain energy and interlaminar stresses from the constitutive equations. It a priori fulfills the displacement and stress contact conditions at the interfaces, considers a second order expansion of Lame's coefficients and a hierarchic representation that adapts to the variation of solutions. Its functional d.o.f. are the traditional mid-plane displacements and the shear rotations, so refinement implies no increase of the number of functional d.o.f. Sandwich shells are represented as multilayered shells made of layers with different thickness and material properties, the core being treated as a thick intermediate layer.
The CCDs are widely used in astronomical observations either in direct imaging use or spectroscopic mode. However, the areas of available sensors are too small for large imaging format. One possibility to obtain large detection area is to assemble mosaics of CCD, and drive them simultaneously. Parallel driving of many CCDs together rules out the possibility of individual tuning; however, such optimisation is very important, when the ultimate low light level performance is required, particularly for new, or mixed devices. In this work, a new concept is explored for an entirely novel approach, where the drive waveforms are multiplexed and interleaved. This simultaneously reduces the number of leadout connections and permits individual optimisation efficiently. The digital controller can be designed within a single EPLD (Erasable Programmable Logic Device) chip produced by a CAD software package, where most of the digital controller circuits are integrated. This method can minimise the component. count., and improve the system efficiency greatly, based on earlier works by Han et a1. (1996, 1994). The system software has an open architecture to permit convenient modification by the user, to fit their specific purposes. Some variable system control parameters can be selected by a user with a wider range of choice. The digital controller design concept allows great flexibility of system parameters by the software, specifically for the compatibility to deal with any number of mixed CCDs, and in any format, within the practical limit.
Monitoring is the most important part of the construction and operation of the embankment dams. Applied instruments in these dams should be determined based on dam requirements and specifications. Instruments selection considered as one of the most important steps of monitoring plan. Competent instruments selection for dams is very important, as inappropriate selection causes irreparable loss in critical condition. Lack of a systematic method for determining instruments has been considered as a problem for creating an efficient selection. Nowadays, decision making methods have been used widely in different sciences for optimal determination and selection. In this study, the Multi-Attribute Decision Making is applied by considering 9 criteria and categorisation of 8 groups of geotechnical instruments. Therefore, the Analytic Hierarchy Process and Multi-Criteria Optimisation and Compromise Solution methods are employed in order to determine the attributes' importance weights and to prioritise of instruments for embankment dams, respectively. This framework was applied for a rock fill with clay core dam. The results indicated that group decision making optimizes the selection and prioritisation of monitoring instruments for embankment dams, and selected instruments are reliable based on the dam specifications.

The effectiveness of base isolation (BI) systems for mitigation of seismic vibration of bridges have been extensively studied in the past. It is well established in those studies that the performance of BI system is largely dependent on the characteristics of isolator yield strength. For optimum design of such systems, normally a standard nonlinear optimization problem is formulated to minimize the maximum response of the structure, referred as Stochastic Structural Optimization (SSO). The SSO of BI system is usually performed with reference to a problem of unconstrained optimization without imposing any restriction on the maximum isolator displacement. In this regard it is important to note that the isolator displacement should not be arbitrarily large to fulfil the serviceability requirements and to avoid the possibility of pounding to the adjacent units. The present study is intended to incorporate the effect of excessive isolator displacement in optimizing BI system to control seismic vibration effect of bridges. In doing so, the necessary stochastic response of the isolated bridge needs to be optimized is obtained in the framework of statistical linearization of the related nonlinear random vibration problem. A simply supported bridge is taken up to elucidate the effect of constraint condition on optimum design and overall performance of the isolated bridge compared to that of obtained by the conventional unconstrained optimization approach.
The imaging areas of currently available optical detectors are relatively small to cope with large image areas such as telescope focal Planes. One Possibility to obtain large detection areas is to assemble mosaics of Charge Coupled Devices(CCDs) and drive them simultaneously. Parallel driving of many CCDs together rules out the possibility of individual tuning; however such optimisation is very important when the ultimate low light level performance is required particularly for new devices. In this work, a new concept has been developed for an entirely novel approach where the drive waveforms are multiplexed and interleaved. This simultaneously reduces the number of leadout connections and permits individual optimisation efficiently. The controller has been designed to include one electronic of component produced by CAD software where most of the digital circuits are integrated to minimise the component count and improve the efficiency of the system greatly. The software has an open architecture to permit convenient modificationl by the user to fit their specific purposes. The desire of controller allows great flexibility of system parameters by the softwa re, specifically for the compatibility to deal with any number of mixed CCDs and in any format within the practical limit. The system has been integrated to test the performance and the result is discussed for readout noise, system linearity and cross-talk between the CCDs. The system developed in this work can be applicable not only for astro nomical observation with a telescope but also in other related fields for low light level detection systems such as spectroscopic application, remote sensing and X-ray detecti13n systems with large sensing areas and high resolution.
Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function is one of key parameters to solve the flow phenomena in problems of landslide. Prediction models for hydraulic conductivity function related to soil-water retention curve equations in many geotechnical applications have been still used instead of direct measurement of the hydraulic conductivity function since prediction models from soil-water retention curve equations are attractive for their fast and easy use and low cost. However, many researchers found that prediction models for the hydraulic conductivity function can not predict the hydraulic conductivity exactly in comparison with experimental outputs. This research introduced an inverse analysis to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity function corresponding to experimental output from the flow pump system. Optimisation process was carried out to obtain the hydraulic conductivity function. This research showed that the inverse analysis with flow pump system was suitable to assess the hydraulic conductivity in unsaturated soil, and the prediction models for the hydraulic conductivity were led to the significant discrepancy from actual experimental outputs.
