  • A microlens connected to microfluidic channel is fabricated. The microlens is sealed with an elastomeric membrane which deforms by pressure of fluid driven by a syringe pump resulting in the shape change of the microlens. The optical properties of the microlens could be controlled by changing the microlens shape. The microlens system were made of an elastomer, PDMS, using molding from a photoplastic master patterned by UV photolithography. The test results show the optical property of the lens could be made into convex and concave type by applying the fluidic pressure positive and negative.

  • The Non-Contact Optical Sensor using the Hologram Laser for CD Pickup was developed to measure a shape of transparent objects and shown a good performance. Therefore the problems caused by the contact sensor are solved by using the Non-Contact Sensor. The Non-Contact Sensor has to move toward the objects and obtain the Focus Error Signal to measure a position of transparent objects. However, if the distance between the sensor and the object is shorter than the working distance of the objective lens, the sensor will be collided against the objects. In this paper we proposed a new algorithm to estimate the start position of the Focus Error Signal to solve the problems of collision between the sensor and the objects. In addition, we verified that the algorithm is free from the collision in the real time measurement.

  • Recently, shape manufacturing method has been changed to a 3D printer. Since lamination type manufacturing method is the basis for forming a three-dimensional shape by repeated lamination, the horizontal accuracy of the lamination layer is very important. In the current paper, we have proposed a new leveling system to be installed in a large 3D printer. The light source was reflected from the water surface contained in the measuring device, and the inclination of the measuring device was measured from the light that entered into four regions of a quarter photodetector. The electrical signals generated differently according to the position of the beam spot incident on the quarter photodetector was acquired and compensated to be horizontal by using a motor mounted at the corner. Compared to a digital leveler, the newly developed leveling system gave errors of only 2 to 3%. This new device can be applied to various fields including the 3D printer in future.

  • A null test method which relies on a computer generated hologram (CGH) is widely used to measure a large aspheric surface. For precise measurements of the surface shape of an aspheric optics, the CGH must precisely generate a wavefront that can fit on the ideal surface shape of the aspheric optics. If fabrication errors arise in the CGH, an unwanted wavefront will be generated and the measuring result will lack trustworthiness. Thus far, there has been limited research on wavefronts generated by CGH using only linear-type binary grating models. In this study, a theoretical error model of a circular-type zone plate, the most commonly used types for CGH patterns, is suggested. The proposed error model is checked by simulations and experiments.

  • We present an all-fiberized power-scalable, sub-nanosecond mode-locked laser based on a frequency-shifted-feedback ring cavity comprised of an erbium-doped fiber, a downshifting acousto-optic modulator (AOM), and a bandpass filter (BPF). With the aid of the frequency-shifted feedback mechanism provided by the AOM and the narrow filter bandwidth of 0.45 nm, we generate self-starting, mode-locked optical pulses with a spectral bandwidth of ~0.098 nm and a pulsewidth of 432 to 536 ps. In particular, the output power is readily scalable with pump power while keeping the temporal shape and spectral bandwidth. This is obtained via the consolidation of bound pulse modes circulating at the fundamental repetition rate of the cavity. In fact, the consolidated pulses form a single-entity envelope of asymmetric Gaussian shape where no discrete internal pulses are perceived. This result highlights that the inclusion of the narrow BPF into the cavity is crucial to achieving the consolidated pulses.

  • We present a simple and low-cost method to fabricate poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) nanochannels with various shapes by combining the standard optical lithography with a PMMA layer transfer and collapse technique. We utilized PMMA membrane reflowing/collapsing phenomena into microchannels to fabricate nanochannels at both corners of arbitrarily-shaped microchannels. This allows nanochannels with various shapes such as curved nanochannels as well as straight nanochannels to be easily fabricated since the shape of the microchannel determines the shape of the nanochannels. This nanochannel fabrication method is simple, flexible, and low-cost since the standard optical lithography with low-resolution optical masks can be used to fabricate nanoscale channels as small as 100 nm wide with various shapes. Also, the sealing of nanochannels can be naturally achieved while the nanochannels are formed through the polymer layer transfer and collapse.

  • Facial feature extraction and tracking are essential steps in human-robot-interaction (HRI) field such as face recognition, gaze estimation, and emotion recognition. Active shape model (ASM) is one of the successful generative models that extract the facial features. However, applying only ASM is not adequate for modeling a face in actual applications, because positions of facial features are unstably extracted due to limitation of the number of iterations in the ASM fitting algorithm. The unaccurate positions of facial features decrease the performance of the emotion recognition. In this paper, we propose real-time facial feature extraction and tracking framework using ASM and LK optical flow for emotion recognition. LK optical flow is desirable to estimate time-varying geometric parameters in sequential face images. In addition, we introduce a straightforward method to avoid tracking failure caused by partial occlusions that can be a serious problem for tracking based algorithm. Emotion recognition experiments with k-NN and SVM classifier shows over 95% classification accuracy for three emotions: "joy", "anger", and "disgust".

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • ESP(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) is an optical technique to measure deforamtion of engineering components and materials in industrial areas. ESPI, a non-contact and non-destructive measuring method, is capable of providing full-field results with high spatial resolution and high speed. One of important application aspects using electronic speckle pattern interferometry is to generate contours of a diffuse object in order to provide data for 3-D shape analysis and topography measurement. The electronic speckle contouring is suitable for providing measurement range from millimeters to several centimeters. In this study, we introduce the contouring method by modified dual-beam speckle pattern interferometer and a shift of the two illumination beams through optical fiber in order to obtain the contour fringe patterns. Before the experiments, we performed the geometric analysis for dual-beam-shifted ESPI contouring. And by this geometric analysis, we performed the electronic speckle contouring experiment. We used 4-frame phase shifting method with PZT for quantitative analysis of contour fringes. Finally, we showed good agreements between the geometric analysis and experimental results.

  • In the non-contact 3-dimensional (3D) shape measurements, the fringe pattern projection method based on the phase-shifting technique has been considered very effective for its high speed and accuracy. The digital fringe projector in particular has great flexibility in generating fringe patterns since the patterns can be controlled easily by the computer program. In this work, we have developed a high-speed digital laser grating projection system using a laser diode and a polygon mirror, and evaluated its performance. It has been demonstrated that all the optical measurements required to find out the profile of a 3D object could be carried out within 31 ms, which confirmed the validity of our 3D measurement system. The result implies the more important fact that the speed in 3D measurement can be enhanced remarkably since, in our novel system, there is no device like a LCD or DMD whose response time limits the measurement speed.
