  • Small molecule OLED devices were fabricated and the electro-optical characteristics were analyzed. The luminance and color coordinate of the fabricated OLED device were $24,390cd/m^2$ and (x=0.15, y=0.22), respectively. Current efficiency of 6.8 cd/A and power efficiency of 2.4 lm/W were also obtained under DC operating condition. Transient light intensity was also measured by using Si photodiode.

  • We show that next-generation galaxy surveys such as KAOS (the Kilo-Aperture Optical Spectro-graph)will constrain dark energy even if the baryon oscillations are missing from the monopole power spectrum and the bias is scale- and time-dependent KAOS will accurately measure the quadrupole power spectrum which gives the leading anisotropies in the power spectrum in redshift space due to peculiar velocities, the finger of God effect, as well as the Alcock-Paczynski effect. The combination of monopole and quadrupole power spectra powerfully breaks the degeneracy between the bias parameters and dark energy and, in the complete absence of baryon oscillations ($\Omega$b = 0), leads to a roughly $500\%$ improvement in constraints on dark energy compared with the monopole spectrum alone. As a result, for KAOS the worst case with no oscillations has dark energy errors only mildly degraded relative to the ideal case, providing insurance on the robustness of KAOS constraints on dark energy. We show that nonlinear effects are crucial in correctly evaluating the quadrupole and significantly improving the constraints on dark energy when we allow for multi-parameter scale-dependent bias.

  • We have studied the effective optical absorption power of Si solar cell with $SiO_2$-antireflection layer based on a mathematical modelling of AM(air mass)1 spectrum and Si refractive index in the wavelength range(0.4 $\mu\textrm{m}\leq$λ$\leq$$0.97\mu\textrm{m}$). The effective optical absorption power obtained from the theoretical calculation was 450 and 520 W/$\m^2$ for the Si solar cells with $SiO_2$-antireflection layer of 500$\AA$ and 1000$\AA$, respectively. The optimum thickness of $SiO_2$-antireflection layer showing the minimum reflection loss was about 1000$\AA$ in the computer simulation. Two kinds of Si solar cells named EBS(500$\AA$) and EBS(l000$\AA$) were fabricated to evaluate the effect of $SiO_2$-antireflection layer thickness on the optical absorption. The epitaxial base Si cell with $SiO_2$-antireflection layer of 1000$\AA$ [EBS(l000$\AA$)] showed the output power improvement of about 15% upon the EBS(500$\AA$) cell due to larger absorption of effective optical power under illumination of AM1, 1 sun.

  • The transmission performance of optical labeling based on a combined frequency shift keying/amplitude shift keying (FSK/ASK) format is studied by numerical simulation. The simulation demonstrates that the bit-error ratio (BER) characteristic of an ASK signal is limited by the extinction ratio, received optical power, and dispersion, simultaneously. However, an FSK signal is mainly limited by the extinction ratio (ER) and received optical power when the peak spectrum, which is used to detect the FSK signal, is relatively narrow.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. • Satellite optical communication has gained significant attention owing to its many quality features (e.g., a larger bandwidth, license free spectrum, higher data rate, and better security) compared to satellite microwave communication. Various experiments have been performed during many space missions to demonstrate and characterize inter-satellite links, downlinks, and uplinks. Korea has also planned to establish an experimental communication system using a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite and the Geochang station as an optical ground station for low Earth orbit (LEO)-to-ground optical relay links. In this study, the performance of inter-satellite communication links and downlinks was investigated for the new Korean experimental communication system in terms of link margin, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. In particular, the performance of the inter-satellite links was analyzed based on the receiving apertures and the transmitting power, while that of the downlink was analyzed in terms of atmospheric turbulence conditions and transmitting power. Finally, we discussed two system parameters of receiving aperture and transmitting power to meet the three criteria of link margin, BER, and channel capacity.

  • We report Optically-Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) study on Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The experiment can easily be conducted with basic optics and microwave components. A diamond crystal having a high-density NV center is suitable for the ODMR study. The magnetic field dependence of ODMR spectrum allowed us to determine the orientation of the diamond crystal. In addition, we measured the variation of the ODMR spectrum as a function of the excitation laser power. Thermal heating induced by optical absorption caused the monotonic decrease of zero field splitting. The contrast of the ODMR peak, however, increased and, then, began to decrease, indicating the optimal laser power for recording the ODMR spectrum.

  • Inductively coupled plasma is commonly used for electrodeless lamp due to its ease of plasma generation. Optical characteristics significantly depend on the RF power and gas pressure of the plasma. This paper describes the measurement of spectrum as a function of RF power and gas pressure with a goal of finding optimal operating conditions of the electrodeless lamp. The gas pressure was varied from 10 [mTorr] to 100 [mTorr] and the RF power was varied from 10 [W] to 120 [W]. It was found that the intensity of wavelength tends to be decreased when argon pressure is increased, and the intensity of wavelength is increased as RF power is increased.

  • Plasma properties of dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) at atmospheric pressure were measured and characterized using optical emission spectroscopy. Optical emissions were measured from argon, nitrogen, or air discharges generated at 5-9 kV using 20 kHz power supply. Emissions from nitrogen molecules were markedly measured, irrespective of discharge gases. The intensity of emission peaks was increased with applied voltage and electrode gap. The short wavelength peaks (315.9 nm and 337.1 nm) measured at the middle of DBDs were significantly increased with applied voltage. The optical emission from DBDs decreased with the addition of oxygen gas, which was especially significant in argon discharge. Emission from oxygen molecules cannot be measured from air discharge and argon discharge with 4.8% oxygen. The emission intensity at 337.1 nm and 357.7 nm related with nitrogen molecule was sensitively changed with electrode types and discharge voltages. However, the pattern of argon emission spectrum was nearly the same, irrespective of electrode type, oxygen content, and discharge voltage.
