  • In this study, radiation sensor tips are fabricated for remote sensing of X or gamma ray with inorganic scintillators and plastic optical fiber. The visible range of light from the inorganic scintillator that is generated by radiation source is guided by the plastic optical fiber and is measured by optical detector and power-meter. Two kinds of sensor tips are designed and fabricated such as film type and powder type. Many kinds of inorganic scintillators are used to fabricate both sensor tips, and the different wavelength of emitting lights from them are measured to determine the optimal inorganic scintillator which has maximum light output. As a radiation source X-ray generator and Ir-192 are selected to test a performance of sensor tip. It is expected that the fiber-optic radiation sensor is widely used in nuclear industry and medical applications due to its special characteristics such as good flexibility, easy in processing, long lengths and no interference to electro magnetic field.

  • Poly(triazine bissulfide)s were synthesized from 6-dibutylamino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiol with bis(4-chloro-3-nitrophenyl)sulfone in the presence of the phase transfer catalyst, and from m-dibromide xylene and p-dibromide xylene with 6-dibutylamino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiol in the presence of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide at $70^{\circ}C$ for 24h. We could acquire the good results about solubility, thermal property, and molecular weight to make cast film. These results are important as base for the synthesis of functionalization polymer material being optical plastic material. The maximum algebra viscosity was 0.57~1.40dl/g at the temperature more than $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$.

  • We have fabricated a multi-mode nonlinear plastic optical fiber (POF) using organic nonlinear optical materials and demonstrated the propagation of light. The refractive indices of core and cladding are 1.5240 and 1.5172. We made a POF preform by rod-in tube method. The core diameter of the fabricated POF is about $30{\mu}m$. We evaluated the temperature characteristics of POF. The sensitivity is $0.345{\;}mW/^{\circ}C$ and the linearity of sensor was good.

  • In this paper, aluminum doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Al) thin films on plastic substrate such as poly carbonate (PC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method for flexible solar cell applications. Effects of the sputter pressure on the structural, electrical and optical properties were investigated. The crystallinity and the degree of the (002) orientation were deteriorated with increasing the sputter pressure. When the sputter pressure was higher, the conductivity of ZnO:Al films was improved because of the high carrier concentration and the Hall mobility. High quality ZnO:Al films with resistivity as low as $1.9{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}-cm$ and the optical transmittance over 80 % in the visible region have been obtained on PC substrate at 2 mTorr.

  • The present work covers a new ray tracing scheme of an injection-molded plastic lens linked with finite element analysis fur injection molding processes. The traditional ray tracing schemes have been based on the assumption that optical property of the lens is homogeneous throughout the entire volume. However, this assumption is quite unrealistic for injection-molded plastic lenses since material properties vary at every point due to injection molding effects. In order to consider non-homogeneous property of a lens, a modified ray tracing method is proposed in connection with finite element analysis of injection molding. Through the analysis of the injection molding process, the distribution of refractive indices can be obtained. This information is then utilized in the proposed ray tracing scheme based on finite element meshes so as to take into account variation of the refractive indices. The effect of mold temperature is also investigated through finite element analysis, and the relevant optical quality is evaluated through the proposed ray tracing simulation.

  • There is an immense need to obtain nanometric surface finish on optical glass owing to the advantage of improved performance of the components. But owing to brittleness and hardness, optical glass is one of the materials that is difficult to ultra-precision turning. According to the hypothesis of ductile mode machining, regardless of their hardness and brittleness, will undergo a transition from brittle to ductile machining region below a critical undeformed chip thickness. Below this threshold, it is suggested that the energy required for plastic formation. Thus, plastic deformation is the predominant mechanism of material removal in machining these materials in this mode. An experimental study is conducted diamond cutting for machining BK7 glass. The investigation presents the feasibility of achieving nanometric surface and the understanding the mechanism of cutting glass, proving the cutting edge radius effect.

  • Flexible displays such as plastic-based liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diode displays (OLEDDs) have been researched and developed at KETI since 1997. The plastic film substrate is very weak to heat and pressure compared to glass substrate, that its fabrication process is limited to 110$^{\circ}C$ and low pressure. The ITO films were deposited on the bare plastic film substrate by rf-magnetron sputtering. Moreover, in order to maintain uniform cell gap and pressure on the plastic film substrate, we utilized newly-invented jig and fabrication process. Electro-optical characteristics were better than or equivalent to those of typical glass LCDs though it is thinner, lighter-weight, and more robust than glass LCDs.

  • We designed optical systems for a mobile phone camera using a spherical SELFOC lens and an aspherical plastic lens. Since the radial index distribution gives an additional design parameter for optical design, an aspheric lens could be replaced by a spherical lens. The imaging performances of the design were compared with conventional 2P design composed of two aspherical plastic lenses. In the first stage of study, we designed 1GRIN 1P lenses by using commercially available SELFOC materials. But, the conventional 2P lenses had better performance than the 1GRIN 1P lenses. In the 1GRIN 1P designs, the performance depends on index variation of GRIN material, the larger variation gives the better performance. Hence, we tried to design by using fictitious GRIN materials which have large index variation. We found if the index variation could be increased to about 3 times that of currently available SELFOC materials, the 1GRIN 1P lens will have equivalent or better performance than the conventional 2P design.

  • The present study covers an integrated simulation method to evaluate optical performance of an aspheric plastic lens by connecting a finite element (FE) analysis of injection molding with a ray tracing simulation. Traditional ray tracing methods have based on the assumption that the optical properties of a lens are homogeneous throughout the entire volume. This assumption is to a certain extent unrealistic for injection-molded plastic lenses because material properties vary at every point due to the injection molding effects. To take into account the effects of the inhomogeneous optical properties of the molded lens, a new.ay tracing scheme is proposed in conjunction with a FE analysis of the injection molding. A numerical scheme is developed to calculate ray paths on every element layer with more realistic information of the refractive indices which can be obtained through the FE analysis. This information is then used to calculate the ray paths based on the FE mesh of which nodal points have unique index values. The proposed tracing scheme is implemented on the tracing of an aspheric lens, and its validity is ascertained through experimental verification.
