Integration of the machine learning (ML) technique in all-optical networks can enhance the effectiveness of resource utilization, quality of service assurances, and scalability in optical networks. All-optical multistage interconnection networks (MINs) are implicitly designed to withstand the increasing highvolume traffic demands at data centers. However, the contention resolution mechanism in MINs becomes a bottleneck in handling such data traffic. In this paper, a select list of ML algorithms replaces the traditional electronic signal processing methods used to resolve contention in MIN. The suitability of these algorithms in improving the performance of the entire network is assessed in terms of injection rate, average latency, and latency distribution. Our findings showed that the ML module is recommended for improving the performance of the network. The improved performance and traffic grooming capabilities of the module are also validated by using a hardware testbed.
Terabit-per-second (Tb/s) transmission capacity for the next generation of long-haul communication networks can be achieved using multicarrier optical super-channel technology. In an elastic orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) super-channel transmission system, demultiplexing a portion of an entire spectrum in the form of a subband with minimum power is critically required. A major obstacle to achieving this goal is the analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which is power-hungry and extremely expensive. Without a proper ADC that can work with low power, it is unrealistic to design a 100G coherent receiver suitable for a commercially deployable optical network. Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is often seen as a primary technique for understanding partial demultiplexing, which can be attained either optically or electronically. If fairly comparable performance can be achieved with an all-optical DFT circuit, then a solution independent of data rate and modulation format can be obtained. In this paper, we investigate two distinct OFDM super-channel receiver models, based on electronic and all-optical DFT-technologies, for partial carrier demultiplexing in a multi-Tb/s transmission system. The performance comparison of the receivers is discussed in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) performance.
Two protocols inclouding the receiver collision avoidance function are proposed for high-speed optical fiber LANs with finite users. The basic idea to avoid receiver collision is the grouping of destination nodes by the number of channels and it is accomplished in the architecture with or without one separate control channel. While the protocol with a control channel requires a tunable optical transmitter, a fixed optical transmitter and two fixed optical receiver, the other protocol requires a tunable optical transmitter and one fixed optical receiver. The performance of two receiver collision avoidance protocols is computed and analyzed under various system parameters. The numerical results show that the receiver collision avoidance protocol has better performance for a small load than the protocol without receiver collision avoidance.
We present an intelligent optical switching structure based on our lambda-group model along with a working scheme that can provide a distinctive approach for dividing complicated traffic into specific tunnels for better optical performance and grooming efficiency. Both the results and figures from our experiments show that the particular channel partition not only helps in reducing ports significantly, but also improves the average signal-to-noise ratio of the wavelength channel and the blocking performance for dynamic connection requests.

The system performance improvement in dispersion managed (DM) links combined with optical phase conjugator (OPC) for compensating for optical signal distortion due to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear fiber effects has been reported. However, in DM link combined OPC, the equalities of the lengths of single-mode fibers (SMFs), the length of dispersion compensating fibers (DCFs), the dispersion coefficient of DCF, and the residual dispersion per span (RDPS) with respect to an OPC restrict a flexible link configuration. Thus, in this paper, we propose a flexible optical link configuration with inequalities of link parameters, the so-called "pseudo-symmetric configuration." Simulation results show that, in the restricted RDPS range of 450 ps/nm to 800 ps/nm, the improvement in the system performance of the proposed pseudo-symmetrically configured optical links is better than that of the asymmetrically configured optical links. Consequently, we confirmed that the proposed pseudo-symmetric configuration is effective and useful for implementing a reconfigurable long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network.
Difficulties in developing process of Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) products such as frequent design modifications, various design requirements, and short-term development period bring on the need of integrated design approach that is efficient and easy to handle. Back Light Unit(BLU) of the LCD, which drastically affects the optical performance of LCD products, is divided into in-coupling part and out-coupling part. Serration of the in-coupling part flattens the light received from point light sources and dot pattern of the out-coupling part regularizes the light sent to screen. Therefore, the optical performance of a LCD product is largely influenced by the shape of serration and the arrangement of dot pattern. In this research, a new design approach which enables to improve the optical performance of LCD products and overcome the prementioned difficulties in developing process of LCD products is proposed. The shape of serration is parameterized to 3 parameters and out-coupling part is partitioned into 10 partitions to apply the optimization technique to this problem. 3 parameters for the shape of serration and densities of 10 partitions are used as design variables in the design optimization. Optical simulation tool named SPEOS is used to evaluate the optical performance of the LCD product. Since the optical simulation uses the random ray tracing technique, numerical noise may possibly be included in the simulation process. To solve the problem caused by numerical noise, the PQRSM which can stably find the solution of the noise problem is used in this research.
