  • After the successful extension of the rotating planar waveguide model to Wave Optics, where a clear identification between the angular velocity of one hypothetical waveguide and the phase differences between two points on the path of one bounded mode was found, an application of the model to explain the interference theory is presented. We demonstrate that, for two bounded modes to create an interference pattern, a constrain to the relative parameters among both is imposed by the fiber optics. This result, not reported in the literature up to date, provides a new horizon to understand the interaction light-light when propagated within optical fibers.

  • Optical flow is important not only for determining velocity and trajectory of the object but also for image segmentation and three dimensional information. In this paper an algorithm for segmentation of the optical flow field is presented. This method is based on a pyramid linking method combined with the proposed models. In this method each node contained a model of the flow in the region that it represented regions were combined by taking the model that best fit the union of the two regions. Each node linked to one of its fathers based on the error between the pixels represented by the node and the father's model of its flow. A major problem which has emerged in conventional researchs on optical flow field is sensitive to noise the proposed method is relatively insensitive to noise at the result of computer simulation the pyramid algorithm proposed in this paper seem to have useful properties.

  • Motion capture systems allow to measure the precise position of markers on the human body in real time. These captured motion data, the marker position data, have to be fitted by a human skeleton model to represent the motion of the human. Typical human skeleton models approximate the joints using a ball joint model. However, because this model cannot represent the human skeleton precisely, errors between the motion data and the movements of the simplified human skeleton model happen. We propose in this paper a method for measuring a translation component of wrist, and elbow joints on upper limb using optical motion capture system. Then we study the errors between the ball joint model and acquired motion data. In addition, we discuss the problem to estimate motion of human joint using optical motion capture system.

  • It is essential to measure load transfer mechanism of pile to check the appropriateness of assumptions made for design purpose and to continuously monitor the behavior of pile foundation. Through many attempts to monitor the behavior of super-structure in civil engineering area using several optical fiber sensors have been made, application of optical fiber sensor technology on pile foundation has not been tried up to now. Load transfer of model piles during compression loading was measured by optical fiber sensors and compared with the measurement by strain gauges. Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor system was used since it has many advantages, such as easy multiplexing, high sensitivity, and simple fabrication. Besides the model pile tests, uniaxial tension test of steel bar and compression tests of mortar specimen were carried out to evaluate the performance of FBG sensors in embedded environments. The shift of refilming wavelength due to the strain in FBG sensor is converted to the strain at sensor location and the dependence between them is 1.28 pm/${\mu}$ strain. FBG sensors embedded in model pile showed a better survivability than strain gauges. Measured results of load transfer by both FBG sensors and strain gauges were similar, but FBG sensors showed a smoother trend than those by strain gauge. Based on the results of model pile test, it was concluded that the use of FBG sensor for strain measurement in pile has a great potential for the analysis of pile load transfer.

  • A variable optical attenuator with a bending-sensitive fiber (BSF) that can be used in optical networks is developed. The refractive index profile of the BSF is divided into four regions which are inner core, center dip of inner core, outer core and clad. The 3-dimensional finite difference beam propagation method (3D FD-BPM) is utilized to find the characteristics of the BSF, so the mode profile of the BSF and optical power attenuation according to the bending are investigated, and the equivalent model of the BSF is made. By using this equivalent model of the BSF, the BSF is fabricated, and the refractive index profile of the BSF is measured, which is similar to refractive index profile of the proposed BSF. The fabricated variable optical fiber attenuator (VOFA) consists of the BSF in a rectangular rubber ring with a fixed bend radius (BR) in a steady state. The VOFA using the proposed BSF was able to attenuate the optical power by more than about -38 ㏈ at certain wavelengths (1540∼1560 nm) based on adjusting the mechanical pressure applied to the upper surface of the rectangular rubber ring with the bent BSF. In addition, the proposed VOFA produced an insertion loss of 0.68 ㏈, polarization dependent loss (PDL) of about 0.5 ㏈, and return loss of less than -60 ㏈.

  • In this paper, a new adaptive learning algorithm, Training by Adaptive Gain (TAG) for optical implementation of large-sized neural networks has been developed and its electro-optical implementation for 2-dimensional input and output neurons has been demostrated. The 4-dimensional global fixed interconnections and 2-dimensional adaptive gain-controls are implemented by multi-facet computer generated holograms and LCTV spatial light modulators, respectively. When the input signals pass through optical system to the output classifying layer, the TAG adaptive learning algorithm is implemented by a personal computer. The system classifies three 5$\times$5 input patterns correctly.

  • We have proposed and theoretically verified an optical regenerator using a single semi-reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (SR-SOA). To explain the operation characteristics and the operation condition of the proposed opticalregenerator, the simplified gain model for the SR-SOA is introduced and confirmed by comparing the result of the SOA simulation based on the transfer matrix method (TMM). The simulation results show that both extinction ratio (ER) enhancement and signal amplification can be achieved in the proposed regenerator.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid optical/digital version of the associative memory which improve hardware efficiency and increase convergence rates. Multifocus hololens are used as space-varient optical element for performing inner product and summation function. The real-time input and the stored states of memory matrix is formated using LCTV. One method of adaptively changing the weights of stored vectors during each iteration is implemented electronically. A design for a optical implementation scheme is discussed and the proposed architecture is demonstrated the ability of retrieving with computer simmulation.

  • In order to design a system a process or plant must be put into a mathematical form for analysis and evaluation, and an appropriate controller must be designed to attain the desired system response. In this paper, the mathematical model for an optical pickup actuator is proposed and an H .inf. controller is employed to obtain the optimal focusing/tracking servo system behavior. Simulation and experiments are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed model.
