  • Since the Abbe number is a value representing the chromatic dispersion of a transparent optical medium, its measurement is essential for multicolor or white light applications of an optical medium. In this study, the Abbe number in a transparent organic thin film was measured through a simple double-slit experiment, and the results agreed with that calculated from a known dispersion formula for this medium. Unlike conventional methods that calculate the Abbe number from the refractive indices measured at three specific wavelengths using dedicated equipment, the method proposed in this study is a very simple experiment to obtain the Abbe number of new optical media without measuring the refractive indices. We demonstrated that experiments at the undergraduate optics level can be utilized to measure the chromatic dispersion of optical media.

  • In this paper, we newly propose a wireless optical identification system and carried out experiments. A wireless optical identification system consists of a reader and a transponder. The configuration of a reader is the same as that of a transponder, which uses LED light as transmission media and detects the signal light with a solar cell. Optical alignment with a lens is not required because the absorption area of a solar cell is wide and flat, and it is very easy to attach a solar cell on the surface of an object. As the light wavelength does not interfere with radio frequency, a wireless optical identification system shows stable operation. In experiments, we realized a wireless optical identification system that automatically identifies the transponder data at a distance of 1 m using solar cells.

  • The current fast-growing Internet traffic is demanding more and more network capacity. Photonic packet switching offers high-speed, data rate/format transparency, and configurability, which are some of the important characteristics needed in future networks supporting different forms of data. In this paper, we define that optical backbone networks for IP transport consist of optical packet core switches and optical fibers. We propose a multi-link photonic packet switch managing as single media which unifies the whole bandwidth of multiple wavelengths on the optical fiber in the WDM optical networks. The proposed switch uses optical packet memories of output link equally as well as using the WDM buffer. So it cuts down the required number of buffers and realizes of the optical packet memory economically.

  • The data rate for transmission through fiber-optic cables has increased to 400 Gbps in single-wavelength channels. However, speeds up to 1 Tbps are required now to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth demand driven by the diverse requirements of contemporary applications for high-quality on-demand video streaming, cloud services, various social media, and emerging 5G-enabled applications. Because the data rates of the per-channel optical interfaces depend strongly on the operational speed of the optoelectronic devices used in optical transceivers, ultrahigh-speed photonic devices and components, and eventually, chip-level transmitter and receiver technologies, are essentially required to realize futuristic optical transceivers with data rates of 1 Tbps and beyond. In this paper, we review the recent progress achieved in high-speed optoelectronic devices, such as laser diodes, optical modulators, photodiodes, and the transmitter-receiver optical subassembly for optical transceivers in data centers and in metro/long-haul transmission.

  • Ethernet PON(Passive Optical Network)의 핵심 기술 충의 하나인 MAC(Media Access Control) 프로토콜은 ONU(Optical Network Unit)들이 상향으로 트래픽을 전송할 때 공유되어 있는 링크상의 충돌을 방지하고, 효율적인 대역폭을 할당하기 위만 스케줄링 알고리즘을 포함하고 있다.

  • A sequence of functions are examined for the gradient-index AR thin film between two dielectric media and are used as the starting profiles in optimization to improve AR performance. Sinusoidal functions were quite efficient to use as components of the index change in the optimization. It is shown that there exist a number of gradient-index profiles which exhibit excellent AR-performance after control of the gradient-index profiles.
