Interfacial Characteristics of $Al-2024/Al_2O_{3p}$ Composite Fabricated by Rheo-compocasting (Rheo-compocasting법으로 제조된 알루미나 입자강화 Al합금 복합재료의 계면반응)

  • Aluminum alloy 2024 matrix composites reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ particles, were prepared by rheo-compocasting, a process which consists of the incoporation distribution of reinforcement by stirring within a semi-solid alloy. The microstructures and characteristics of the interfaces have been studied using optical microscope and scanning electon microscope in 2024 aluminum alloy composites reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ particles. The main results are as follows: (1) $Al_2O_3$ particles were well distributed in composites by using rheo-compocasting. (2) As the addition of $Al_2O_3$ particle increases, the average dendrite numbers and the hardness were increased. (3) Interaction between $Al_2O_3$ particles and alloy 2024 resulted in the formation of Mg and Cu element rich region around the $Al_2O_3$ particles.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) was proposed in the 1970's as a method of producing the interferogram without using traditional holographic technique. ESPI is more faster than Holography method, because the interferometric image is recorded and updated by the video camera every 1/30 second and whold-field inspection possibly. In this study using a non-contact optical technique that is suited for in-plane and out-of-plane deformation measurement. Thin plate with crack was analyzed by ESPI to determine the characteristics of vibration mode shape and natural frequency. Also, results of the experiment were compared with Finite Element Method(FEM).

Area of Horn's Tip and Weldability of Cu Sheets (초음파 혼의 Tip 면적과 Cu 박판의 용착성)

  • In this study, a 20,000Hz ultrasonic horn was designed and fabricated using a finite element analysis. The horn's resonate frequency was 19,991Hz, and the harmonic response frequency was 20,000Hz. In order to observe the developed horn's performance, 4,000 pieces of displacement data were obtained using an optical sensor and were analyzed using a fast Fourier transform. Finally, the developed horn's resonate frequency was found to be 19,992Hz. The effect of the tip area of the developed horn on the weldability of a Cu sheet was experimentally investigated. It was found that the welding strengths of specimens welded using a small tip area were generally higherthan those of specimens welded using a large tip area.

  • This paper deals with a moving coil type linear motor for fast access of the miniature ODD. This slim-line motor is composed of the mover supported by guide mechanism, the coil wound into it, and the yoke attached to the permanent magnet for stator. The driving force is generated by the PM of the stator and the current in the coil of the mover. Magnetic circuit analysis and Finite Element Method are applied to estimate force at air gap.   • Bulk metallic glass (BMG) shows higth strength, high elastic limit, corrosion resistance and good wear resistance and soft magnetic properties and has been considering as a candidate for new structural materials. But they show limited macroscopic plasticity and lack of tensile ductility due to highly localized shear deformation, which should be solved for real structural application. In this paper researches on the enhancement of plasticity of BMG were reviewed briefly. Introducing heterogeneous structure in glass is effective to induce more shear transformation zones (STZs) active for multiple shear band initiation and also to block the propagating shear band. Several methods such as BMG alloy design for high Poisson's ratio, addition of alloying element having positive heat of mixing, pre-straining BMG and variety of BMG composites have been developed for homogenous distribution of locally weak region, where local strain can be initiated. Therefore enhancement of plasticity of BMG is normally accompanied with some penalty of strength loss.

  • Active damping system is generally used for the vibration suppression and precise motion control for the flexible structure. This application can be easily found on the space structure and driving mechanism of optical storage devices. Although a control system using the flexible structure has many advantages over using rigid mechanism in driving energy saving, system weights, and etc., more complex and precise control strategies are required. A position control system using flexible structure and the concept of active damper is designed and manufactured, which is driven by slide DC motor and moving coil motor located at the tip of the flexible beam. Dynamic characteristics of this system are investigated by analytic and experimental ways. By the comparison of those two results, a nominal reference model for this system is proposed.

  • In this paper, the design and characteristics of a ${\pi}-shaped$ ultrasonic motor which is applicable to optical zoom operation of lenssystem for mobile phone are investigated. Its desi후 and simulation of performances are carried out by FEM (finite element method) commercial software. As a simulation result, by applying voltage with single phase, a combined vibration is produced at the surface of an arm of stator. The prototype of motor is fabricated and its outer size is 8*4*2 $mm^3$ including the cylindrical steel rod of 2 mm in diameter as rotor. The motor exhibits a maximum speed of 500 rpm and a power consumption of 0.3 W when driven at 20 Vpp and 64 kHz.

  • A computer code was developed to simulate the filling stage of the injection/compression molding process by a finite element method. The constitutive equation used here was the compressible Leonov model. The PVT relationship was assumed to follow the Tait equation. The flow-induced birefringence was related to the calculated flow stresses through the linear stress-optical law. Simulations of a disk part under different processing conditions including the variation of compression stroke and compression speed were carried out to understand their effects on flow-induced birefringence. The simulated results were also compared with those by conventional injection molding and with experimental data from literature.

A Study on Improvement of Birefringence Characteristics of Injection-Molded Plastic Parts by Rapid Mold Heating (급속 금형가열에 의한 사출성형품의 복굴절특성 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The present work focuses on the prediction of birefringence in injection-molded part and its improvement by rapid mold heating. To calculate birefringence, flow-induced residual stress is computed through a fully three-dimensional injection molding analysis. Then the stress-optical law is applied from which the order of birefringence can be evaluated and visualized. The birefringence patterns are predicted for a rectangular plate with a variation of mold temperature, which shows that the amount of molecular orientation and birefringence level decreases with an increase of mold temperature. The effect of mold temperature on the order of birefringence is also studied for a thin-walled rectangular strip, and the relevant results are compared with experimental measurements. Both predicted and experimental patterns of birefringence are in agreements on the observation that the birefringence level diminishes significantly when the mold temperature is raised over the glass transition temperature.
