Development of Autonomous Cable Monitoring System of Bridge based on IoT and Domain Knowledge (IoT 및 도메인 지식 기반 교량 케이블 모니터링 자동화 시스템 구축 연구)

  • Stay-cable is one of the most important load carrying members in cable-stayed bridges. Monitoring structural integrity of stay-cables is crucial for evaluating the structural condition of the cable-stayed bridge. For stay-cables, tension and damping ratio are estimated based on modal properties as a measure of structural integrity. Since the monitoring system continuously measures the vibration for the long-term period, data acquisition systems should be stable and power-efficiency as the hardware system. In addition, massive signals from the data acquisition systems are continuously generated, so that automated analysis system should be indispensable. In order to fulfill these purpose simultaneously, this study presents an autonomous cable monitoring system based on domain-knowledge using IoT for continuous cable monitoring systems of cable-stayed bridges. An IoT system was developed to provide effective and power-efficient data acquisition and on-board processing capability for Edge-computing. Automated peak-picking algorithm using domain knowledge was embedded to the IoT system in order to analyze massive data from continuous monitoring automatically and reliably. To evaluate its operational performance in real fields, the developed autonomous monitoring system has been installed on a cable-stayed bridge in Korea. The operational performance are confirmed and validated by comparing with the existing system in terms of data transmission rates, accuracy and efficiency of tension estimation.

A Case Study on Children's Informal Knowledge of the Fractional Multiplication (분수의 곱셈에서 비형식적 지식의 형식화 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate children's informal knowledge of the fractional multiplication and to develop a teaching material connecting the informal and the formal knowledge. Six lessons of the pre-teaching material are developed based on literature reviews and administered to the 7 students of the 4th grade in an elementary school. It is shown in these teaching experiments that children's informal knowledge of the fractional multiplication are the direct modeling of using diagram, mathematical thought by informal language, and the representation with operational expression. Further, teaching and learning methods of formalizing children's informal knowledge are obtained as follows. First, the informal knowledge of the repeated sum of the same numbers might be used in (fractional number)$\times$((natural number) and the repeated sum could be expressed simply as in the multiplication of the natural numbers. Second, the semantic meaning of multiplication operator should be understood in (natural number)$\times$((fractional number). Third, the repartitioned units by multiplier have to be recognized as a new units in (unit fractional number)$\times$((unit fractional number). Fourth, the partitioned units should be reconceptualized and the case of disjoint between the denominator in multiplier and the numerator in multiplicand have to be formalized first in (proper fractional number)$\times$(proper fractional number). The above teaching and learning methods are melted in the teaching meterial which is made with corrections and revisions of the pre-teaching meterial.

  • Purpose: NCS(National Competency Standards) is a systematic organization of knowledge, skills, and literacy required for performing tasks in industrial settings. This research aims to search for keywords that are important to us and to present key directions of education for the fourth industrial age in the future. Methods: The systematic classification system of NCS was investigated and the classification code structure was analyzed. Among them, the frame and structure analysis of the classification code of quality was analyzed using R-program. Results: This study grasped the quality classification situation of NCS and suggested improvement plan from the operational aspect of the fourth industrial revolution era. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study suggested the idea of education direction of SMEs(Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) in the era of the 4th industrial revolution by understanding NCS which reflects Korean characteristics.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a knowledge-based real-time decision support system to support decision makers for efficient berth operation of Inchon Port. In these days, the efficient berth operation has been many studied. The berth operation rules differ from port to port and the problem is highly dependent on natural, geographical and operational environment of port. In Inchon Port, the ship's entrance into port and departure from port is extremely affected by the status of dock and berth because of capacity restriction. First, we analyzed the specific characteristics of Inchon Port such as dock based on the data of 1997. And then, we construct the database of experts knowledge for berth utilization. Finally, we build the real-time decision support system for the efficient berth operation of Inchon Port to make the better berth allocation in case of not only regular scheduling but also dynamic scheduling such as delay in berth operation and exchange of ship between berths. The DSS is developed with graphic user interface(GUI) concept to help the user determining user interactive updating of the port status. Then this DSS will be provide decision maker with an efficient and fast way to berth allocation, and reduce wastes of time, space, and manpower in Inchon Port operation.

  • The security control can be defined as all control actions and counter-measures to return the operating state of the system to a normal state. In an emergency state, fault clearing and/or overload suppression is enabled as a security control in order to prevent the extension of the fault. In the alert state, counter-measures should be set up in advance for the dangerous points of the system operation in drder to protect the system from expected accidents. In the normal state, the routine scenario is conducted to analyze system state. In the decision-making of the classification of system states, the heuristic and experienced knowledge can be well applied and thus application of expert system to this area attains considerable achievements. In this study, it is attempted to extract empirical rules through heuristic analysis and establish the knowledge base. Finally, the incorporation method with the conventional program packages in proposed. The expert system is designed to select an appropriate method and to perform the corresponding package. The input data can be automatically set up by using the data base. The computation results can be automatically added to the data base.

  • Pilots and navigators have through history used everything available to support them in the execution of their task. From the simple sounding means (for instance a stick or a line with a heavy object tied to it) to the advanced electronic support systems that are available today. This means that apart from the more traditional side of his set of tasks the influence of modern technology is felt. In general it concerns such diverse and complex subjects that it requires the pilot to remain up to date with regard to the most modern techniques. In a sense this also concurs with the change form a provider of (local) knowledge to that of a manager of a high risk operation. More information flows can reach the pilot on the place where he executes his profession. With marginal scope the pilot has to translate such information to the situation in which he finds himself in order to give a balanced advice. Knowledge of the surroundings, variable circumstances in his specific area but also language and culture play a crucial role. This paper touches on the history of pilot support systems and examines the developments of pilot support systems in the present day operating environment and addresses the implications. These range from the historic basic needs for pilot information to the present and future possibilities, supporting the pilot to make the most precise assessment at each operational stage to continually execute a safe journey in and out of port.

  • Recently, power system is getting larger and more complex. When the complex power system has a problem, it is very difficult even for the experts to find out where the problem is and to make a timely decision by operators. There have been many studies on these problems but the results are not good enough for applying to real power system. Therefore power system operators always had to judge the exact state of power system and had to be preparative for the problems that can occur later. We developed new methods that can be applied to complex power system by dividing the system into small modules. By using 'module' we can combine small modules together to make complex power systems and the knowledge base that is applied to fault diagnosis system. As a result, compared to previously developed diagnosis products, operational time has shortened, and the knowledge base becomes simpler and clearer, which made online usage capable. This system can be used as a complementary measure that helps the operator from making any mistakes.

  • Education emphasizes problem-solving skills based on convergent thinking power in an era of rising uncertainty and rapid progress. This paper proactively designed e-Learning team teaching convergence liberal arts courses for prospective teachers by these social needs. It analyzed the empirical effects on the operation of the subjects to foster future talent who can converge and apply knowledge in various fields. The curriculum consisted of professors of mathematics, practical Arts, computer, and education, and was operated to convey convergent knowledge of information technology and humanities, and consisted of 15 liberal arts courses at J University. Besides, textbooks and teaching materials were also developed by the faculty. As a result of the primary research, prospective teachers who took the course generally showed high satisfaction with the class, especially for the faculty. The students' overall convergent thinking ability has increased to a statistically significant level (p<.01), and the students' major has been found to be irrelevant. On the other hand, it can be seen that communication, content convergence, and caring factors, excluding creativity factor, have all risen to a significant level.

Good modeling practice of water treatment processes

  • Models for water treatment processes include simulation, i.e., modelling of water quality, flow hydraulics, process controls and design. Water treatment processes are inherently dynamic because of the large variations in the influent water flow rate, concentration and composition. Moreover, these variations are to a large extent not possible to control. Mathematical models and computer simulations are essential to describe, predict and control the complicated interactions of the water treatment processes. An accurate description of such systems can therefore result in highly complex models, which may not be very useful from a practical, operational point of view. The main objective is to combine knowledge of the process dynamics with mathematical methods for processes estimation and identification. Good modelling practice is way to obtain this objective and to improve water treatment processes(its understanding, design, control and performance- efficiency). By synthesize of existing knowledge and experience on good modelling practices and principles the aim is to help address the critical strategic gaps and weaknessesin water treatment models application.

Trends and Issues of e-Learning Curriculum for Human Resources Development in the Corporate Context

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze majors trends and issues of e-Learning curriculum for human resource development in the corporate context. The e-Learning curriculum was chosen as the subject of research consists of 2,710 lectures that were given from 2007 to July 2009 for the recent three years by providing at Ministry of Labor and Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training. In order to investigate trends and issues, it was employed theme analysis which is one of the types of document analysis that approach a qualitative research methodology. As a result of this research, 7 major trends and issues in e-Learning curriculum for HRD in the field of corporate education were drawn; ① Strengthening expertise through learning of job related professional knowledge, ② Cultivation of common & essential knowledge for a job to increase work performance efficiency ③ Organizational management strategy for improving performance, ④ Organizational management and operational strategy for actively responding to environmental changes, ⑤ Leadership as a strategy for cultivating core personnel and field-centered practical leadership. ⑥ Creating a happy workplace through the work-life balance, ⑦ Strengthening global communication skill. Based on these analysis, practicals and theoretical implications of e-Learning professionals and HR researchers for HRD were suggested.
