  • This study investigates the effects of the operation of science activity program on scientific literacy focusing on science cultural literacy and core competencies for pre-service teachers. 255 pre-service teachers of K University participated, and the effects of the program were examined through a paired-sample t-test with one group pretest-posttest design for science cultural literacy. Only the post-test was conducted on core competency growth perception, and differences in growth perceptions by competency were compared using ANOVA. As a result of the study, the average of pre-service teachers was higher than the pre-test for science culture literacy, and this difference was statistically significant (p<.05). In the core competency growth perception, 70.6% of pre-service teachers reported growth in scientific communication ability, and as a result of the post-hoc test using LSD, it shows statistically significant growth compared to other competencies (p<.05). Through this, it was possible to confirm the educational value of the science activity program as a way to develop pre-service teachers' scientific literacy.

  • TPS (Train Performance Simulation) based on ATO (Automatic Train Operation) is required for driverless LRT (Light Rail Transit) operation plan instead of typical TPS based on driver operation. In this paper, new TPS model using ATO pattern is proposed and compared with the automatic train operation result in a test line of Seoul Metro Line 6 and in a whole line of Busan-Gimhae LRT. The actual ATO pattern can be very accurately simulated by new TPS model with the introduction of 4 parameters such as commercial braking rate, jerk, station stop profile and grade converted distance. The commercial scheduled time for driverless automatic train operation can be proposed to have "Fast" mode TPS trip time plus 3 seconds/km margin recommended by Korean standard LRT specification in this paper.

  • Recently, the development of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) has been required as power demands increase in the power system. A distribution-level prototype resistive SFCL using coated conductor (CC) has been developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and Yonsei University for the first time in the world. The ratings of the SFCL are 13.2kV/630A at normal operating condition. A novel non-inductive winding method is used in fabricating coils so there is almost zero impedance during normal operation. The distribution SFCL is cooled by sub-cooled liquid nitrogen $(LN_2)$ of 65K and 3 bar to enhance cryo-dielectric performance, critical current density, and thermal conductivity. In order to make reliable operation of an SFCL in real power systems, we monitored and controled its operation conditions by using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) method. Thus, a monitoring system for the SFCL employing information technology (IT) is proposed and developed to be on the lookout for the operation conditions such as inside temperature, inside pressure, $LN_2$ level, voltage and current. Since operation temperature should be kept constant, bang-bang control for temperature feedback with a heater attached to the cold head of cryo-cooler is applied to the system. Short-circuit tests with prospective fault current of 10kA and AC dielectric withstand voltage tests up to 143kV for 1 minute were successfully performed at Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. This paper deals with the development of a distribution level SFCL and its monitoring system for reliable operation.

  • Lumostatic operation for cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis was assessed to test the scale-up strategy of photobioreactors. Lumostatic operation is a method of maintaining a proper light condition based on the specific light uptake rate ($q_e$), by cells. Lumostatic operations were performed in 0.4-, 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale bubble column photobioreactors and the results were compared with cultures illuminated with constant light intensity. Significant differences were observed in the maximal cell concentrations obtained from 0.4-, 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale photobioreactors under constant light intensity, yielding the maximal cell concentrations of $2.8{\times}10^5$, $2.2\times10^5$, $1.5\times10^5$, and $1.1\times10^5$ cells/ml, respectively. The maximal cell concentration in a 0.4-1 photobioreactor under lumostatic operation was $4.3\times10^5$ cells/ml. Furthermore, those in 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale photobioreactors were about the same as that in the 0.4-1 photobioreactor. The results suggest that lumostatic operation with proper $q_e$ is a good strategy for increasing the cell growth of Haematococcus pluvialis compared with a constant supply of light energy. Therefore, lumostatic operation is not only an efficient way to achieve high cell density cultures with minimal power consumption in microalgal cultures but it is also a perfect parameter for the scale-up of photobioreactors.

  • The railway signalling system plays an essential role in the headway and routing control for a safe and efficient train operation. The reliable and safe operation of the system is very important because the failure of the railway signalling system can lead to the collision, derailment, or unexpected stop of a train. So far, the conventional wayside signal mode (ATS: Automatic Train Stop) has been generally used as the railway signalling system. However, this system is highly linked to a risk of major accidents resulted from human mistakes such as missing a signal or careless control of train speed. Accordingly, the onboard signal mode (ATC: Automatic Train Control) as an alternative of ATS has been recently introduced and applied to transmit effectively the information on speed control of a train by using computers and communication equipment. In the process of replacing the obsolete signal system, it is necessary to switch over the system while providing passengers with normal services. Therefore, the integration of a railway signaling system compatible for both ATS and ATC and its interface is discussed in this study. In particular, the implementation scenario required for operation planning of the integrated system was designed, and the results as well as effects of its applicability test were also presented.

  • This paper presents a mathematical model for a double-fleet operation in Korean high speed rail (HSR). KORAIL has a plan to launch new HSR units in 2010, which are composed of 10 railcars. The double-fleet operation assigns a single-unit or two-unit fleet to a segment, accommodating demand fluctuation. The proposed model assumes stochastic demand and uses chance-constrained constraints to assure a preset service level. It can be used in the tactical planning stage of the rail management as it includes several real-world conditions, such as the capacities of the infra-structures and operational procedures. In the solution approach, the expected revenue in the objective function is linearized by using expected marginal revenue, and the chance-constrained constraints are linearized by assuming that demands are normally distributed. Subsequently, the model can be solved by a mixed-integer linear programming solver fur small size problems. The test results of the model applied to Friday morning train schedules for one month sample data from KTX operation in 2004 shows that the proposed model could be utilized to determine the effectiveness of double-fleet operation, which could significantly increase the expected profit and seat utilization rates when properly maneuvered.

  • In this paper, development of the 8kW parallel module converter is presented. For a effective configuration of FB-PWM converter, this paper proposes 4-parallel operation of 2 kw-module. FB converter of 2-kW module is controlled by phase shut PWM and in order to achieve ZVZCS, the simple auxiliary circuit is applied in secondary side. In order to achieve ZCS, control logic for auxiliary circuit operation is designed to reset the primary current during free-wheeling period. For output current sharing of 4-modules, the charge control is employed. The charge control logic is designed with phase shift PWM logic. Voltage controller is implemented by using DSP(TMS320LF2406) with A/D conversion data of the output current and voltage of each module. The developed converter is installed in PCU(Power Conditioning Unit) for HSG(High Speed Generator) in a vehicle and health monitoring system is implemented for vehicle operation test. Finally, performance of the developed converter is proved under practical operation of HSG.

  • The existing gate operation rule of Paldang hydroelectric plant has been used since the construction of the dam in 1973 except partial modification due to the construction of Chungju multipurpose dam in 1985. The water level near the downstream of Paldang dam has been lowered about 3 m because of the channel maintenance of Han River development project. Thus, the discharge estimation formula based on the submerged orifice type spillway has to be re-evaluated by considering various patterns of the gate operation rules and lowered channel bed. In this study, three types of gate openings were tested to select the proper gate operation rules through the hydraulic model test for various discharges and opening heights. Also, the numerical analysis has been performed to simulate the flow patterns of downstream. As a result, the gate operation rule, which opens 5 gates each time from the left side, was selected as the proper gate operation rule of Paldang dam.

  • The purposes of this study were to develop the standard indicators to evaluate the food and nutrition systems in hospitals and to test the validity of those items scientifically. The results were as follows: First, the conceptual validity was examined with recognition degrees of importance from the hospital nutrition department managers. All of the hospital nutrition department's operation evaluation standards and the indicators' conceptual validity tested were in the range of 3.71~4.93 out of 5.0, and the mean score was 4.36. Therefore, the conceptual validity was verified. Second, to verify the factor validity of the items of the standards and indicators for the hospital nutrition department's operation evaluation, the standards and indicators were analyzed as key-factors. Key-factor analysis after vertical rotation showed that four factors appeared and were composed of (a) facilities management, (b) sanitation management, (c) operation & foodservice management, and (d) nutrition management. Third, the reliability of the standards and indicators for the hospital nutrition department's operation evaluation was analyzed and resulted in a score of 0.98, which showed good internal consistency. Fourth, the discriminative power of each item of the standards for the hospital nutrition department's operation evaluation was tested by checking the differences between groups with first quartile and forth quartile of total evaluation scores. The indicators having low distinction power were modified into obligatory items or eliminated for better differentiation.

  • The aim of this study was to measure and analyze engine load factor (LF) according to working conditions (operation type and gear stage) of small agricultural multi-purpose cultivator to estimate the emission of air pollutants. To calculate LF, a torque sensor capable of collecting torque and rotational speed was installed on the engine output shaft and DAQ was used to collect data. A field test was conducted with major operation of a cultivator and tillage operations (plow tillage and rotary tillage). Engine power was calculated using engine torque and rotational speed and LF was calculated using real-time power and rated power. In addition, unified LF was calculated using the weight for each operation and the average LF for each operation. As a result, average LF values at 1.87 and 3.10 km/h by plow tillage were 0.50 and 0.69, respectively. Average LF values at 1.87 and 3.10 km/h by rotary tillage were 0.70 and 0.78, respectively. Furthermore, unified LF calculated in consideration of the weight factor showed a value of 0.65, which was 135% higher than the conventional LF (0.48). Results of this study could be used as basic information for realizing LF values in the field of agricultural machinery.
