  • From a water-environmental point of view, with a change of understanding and concern about vegetation, it changes that vegetation acts as stability of channel and bed, providing habitats and feed for fauna, and means improving those with appreciation of the beautiful but resistant factor to the flow So, it becomes important concern and study subjects that turbulent structure by vegetation, shear stress and transport as well as roughness and average velocity by vegetation. But from a hydraulic point of view, vegetation causes resistance to the flow and can increase the risk of flooding, Therefore, this thesis concern the flow characteristics in vegetated open channels. According to the experimental results, $z_0$ was on an average $0.4h_p$ in a vegetated open channel. So, the elevation corresponding to zero velocity in a vegetated channel was the middle of roughness element. The limit for logarithmically distributed profile over the roughness element was from $z_0$ to $0.80h_{over}$ for a vegetated channel. Among the existing theory, the method of Kouwen et al.(1969), Haber(1982), and El-Hakim and Salama(1992) except Stephan(2001) gave a very good value compared to the measured velocity profile.

  • Open channel type regenerative pump has been used in various industrial fields. It generates high pressure with low flow rate. However, it has low efficiency because of its complex flow pattern, We studied performance experiments and 3D numerical flow analysis of a regenerative pump. Through the numerical analysis, we could get the internal flow pattern and profile of a regenerative pump. Also, we examined leakage flow effects due to the gap between casing and impeller and stripper clearance. For the numerical analysis verification, we performed experiments and they had similar tendency at the design point.

  • This study presents numerical simulation of turbulent flows in a rectangular open-channel that has a width-to-depth ratio of 2 using the source code provided by OpenFOAM. Large eddy simulations are carried out by solving the filtered continuity and momentum equations numerically. For the non-isotropic residual stress term, Smagorinsky's (1963) model is used. The flow in the open-channel whose width-to-depth ratio is 2, from experiment of Tominaga et al. (1989), is simulated numerically. Simulation results are compared with measured data by Tominga et al. (1989) and Nezu and Rodi (1985) and with LES data by Shi et al. (1999). Comparisons revealed that the model simulates the mean flow and turbulence statistics well. Specifically, the model reproduced the inner secondary currents located at the corner of sidewall and free surface successfully. In addition, the vortical component of turbulence intensity shows bulged contours towards the bottom edge.

  • In this paper, experiments of air-breathing proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for mobile devices were carried out according to the cathode conditions. These conditions are defined by the cathode flow field plate type (the channel type, the open type) and the cathode surface direction. Single cell and 6-cell stack were used in this experiments. The experimental results showed that the open type cathode flow field plate gave better performance for small size PEMFCs because the open type cathode plate allowed better air convection than the channel type cathode plate. In the experiments related to the direction of the slits on the cathode flow field plate, the horizontal slit cell was better than the vertical slit cell. With respect to the cathode surface direction, when the cathode surface is placed in the direction normal to the ground, PEMFC generated more stable power in the mass transport loss region.

  • In water treatment plants, open channel is used to distribute incoming flow to parallel treatment unit, such as flocculation basin and sedimentation basin. These control devices must be designed so that the incoming flow evenly distributed to the process unit. this is important in the view of optimizing process unit. In the recent past. significant insights into the sedimentation process have been developed. In this study, the 2-D computer program is developed to investigate fluid flow field and velocity vectors in flocculation sedimentation inlet distribution weir and calculate flow rates in each inlet weir. The specific purpose of this study is to analyze physical design factors, such as now rates, shape of channel, tapered angle in tapered type channel and main channel width.

  • A numerical work was performed to study the flow behaviors of the open channel type flow with its geometric boundary conditions being similar to that of the Multi-Stage-Flash evaporator with and without a baffle. For the analysis, two-dimensional steady turbulent flow was assumed and the widely known k-.epsilon. turbulence model was usded. SIMPLE algorithm and the power difference scheme were used for the numerical approach. Numerical results generally agree with the previous experimental results though there are some uncertainties at far downstream and near the free surface due to the three dimensionality of the flow and surface waves. Without a baffle, the flow has basically the shape of the submerged plane wall jet with its upper boundary at downstream being sharply curved toward the free surface. For the flow with a baffle, recirculation flow patterns are observed at the upper inlet portion and at the backside of the baffle. For the case without a baffle, it was also confirmed that the ratio between the liquid level and the gate opening height is the most important parameter to determine the flow behavior.

  • Present study examines the detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. Numerical approaches used in the previous studies of detonation wave propagation were extended to the present study with OpenMP parallelization for multicore SMP machines. The major effect of the curved geometry on the detonation wave propagation seems to be a flow compression effect, regardless of the detonation regimes. The flow compression behind the detonation wave by the curved geometry of the circular channel pushes the detonation wave front and results in the overdriven detonation waves with increased detonation speed beyond the Chapmann-Jouguet speed. This effect gets stronger as the normalized radius smaller, as expected. The effect seems to be negligible beyond the normalized radius of 10.

  • The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality in February, 1995. Many experiments should be safely performed to activate the utilization of the HANARO. A flow simulated test facility has been developed for the verification of structural integrity of those experimental facilities prior to loading In the HANARO. This test facility is composed of three major parts; a half-core structure assembly, flow circulation system and support system. The half-core structure assembly is composed of plenum, grid plate, core channel with flow tubes, chimney and dummy pool. The flow channels are to be filled with flow orifices to simulate similar flow characteristics to the HANARO. This paper describes an analysis of the flow distribution of the cote channel and compares with the test results. As results, the analysis showed similar flow characteristics compared with those in the test results.

  • The portable hydraulic turbine we previously developed for open channels comprises an axial flow runner with an appended collection device and a diffuser section. The output power of this hydraulic turbine was improved by catching and accelerating an open-channel water flow using the kinetic energy of the water. This study aimed to further improve the performance of the hydraulic turbine. Using numerical analysis, we examined the performances and flow fields of a single runner and a composite body consisting of the runner and collection device by varying the airfoil and number of blades. Consequently, the maximum values of input power coefficient of the Runner D composite body with two blades (which adopts the MEL031 airfoil and alters the blade angle) are equivalent to those of the composite body with two blades (MEL021 airfoil). We found that the Runner D composite body has the highest turbine efficiency and thus the largest power coefficient. Furthermore, the performance of the Runner D composite body calculated from the numerical analysis was verified experimentally in an open-channel water flow test.
