  • Cavity tone is generated due to the feedback between flow and acoustic wave. It is recognized that the period is determined by the time required for the flow convection in one direction, the time required for the acoustic propagation in the other direction and the time for phase shift depending on the flows and mode. Most of the phenomena have been investigated by experiments and a simple but fundamental theory. But the cause of the phase shift and the correctness of the theory have not been clearly explained so far. In this paper, the phenomena are calculated numerically to obtain detail information of flow and acoustic wave to explain the mechanism including the phase. High order high resolution scheme of optimized high order compact is used to resolve the small acoustic quantities and large flow quantities at the same time. The data are reduced using cross correlation function in space and time and cross spectral density function which has phase information. Abrupt change in pressure near corner in cavity is observed and is relate to phase variation. The time required for the feedback between the flow and acoustic wave is calculated after the numerical simulation f3r various modes. The periods based on the time calculated using the above method and direct observation from the acoustic waves generated and propagated in the numerical simulation are compared. It is found that no phase shift is required if we examine the time required carefully. Rossiter's formula for the cavity tone used for quick estimation needs to be modified far some modes.

  • Experimental investigation of the flow field of supersonic cavity is described. In this research, supersonic cavity is used in chemical laser system. For efficient laser, downstream flow after cavity need to be uniform and clear for pressure recovery system. In previous research, it's known that there's oscillation In cavity and is due to Mach number and L/D ratio. A strong recompression occurs at the after wall and the flow is visibly unsteady. Cavity flow in this research is of the open type, that is, length-to-depth ratio $L/D<10\;at\;M\;=\;3$. Experiment is done with pressure measurement by piezo-type sensor and visualization by Schlirern method. The time-dependent experimental result is compared with computation.

  • A New Method of Extracting the Filter Characteristics of the Nasal Cavity Using Homorganic Nasal-Stop Sequences: A Preliminary R eportHansang ParkThis study provides a new method of extracting the filter characteristics of the nasal cavity. Korean lenis stops are realized as voiced in the homorganic nasal-lenis stop sequences between vowels. Since the only difference between the two members of the homorganic nasal- lenis stop sequences, such as [mb], [nd], and [ g], is whether the passage to the nasal cavity is open or not, the subtraction of the LPC spectrum of the voiced stop from that of the preceding nasal leads to the filter characteristics of the nasal cavity of an individual speaker regardless of place of articulation. The results suggest that various attempts should be made to extract a robust filter characteristics of the nasal cavity by giving variation to LPC coefficients and by paying particular attention to speech samples. This study is significant in that it provides a preliminary report about a new method of extracting the filter characteristics of the nasal cavity.

  • A Dish type solar concentrating system consists of a parabolic concentrator and a cavity receiver. In order to achieve high temperatures from solar energy, it is essential to efficiently reflect the solar rays in the concentrator and to minimize thermal losses in the cavity receiver. Improving the economical efficiency of a solar power system required the stirling unit to be operated continuously. For continuous operation of the stilting unit, the receiver must be continuously provided with thermal energy from solar as well as additional combustion heat. It is possible for a hybrid solar receiver system equipped with an additional combustion to be operated 24 hrs/day. A hybrid solar receiver was designed and manufactured for a total thermal load of 35 kW in the operating temperature range $700^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. The hybrid receiver system was tested in gas-only mode by gas-fired heat to investigate thermal characteristics at inclination angle varying from 0 deg to 30 deg(cavity facing down) and the aperture to cavity diameter ratios of 0(closed cavity) and 1.0(open cavity). This paper has been conducted to measure temperature distribution in cavity surface and to analyze thermal resistances, and the evaporation and condensation heat transfer coefficient in all cases(open and closed cavity).

  • We have performed integrated dynamics modeling for a supercavitating vehicle. A 6-DOF equation of motion was constructed by defining the forces and moments acting on the supercavitating body surface that contacted water. The wetted area was obtained by calculating the cavity size and axis. Cavity dynamics were determined to obtain the cavity profile for calculating the wetted area. Subsequently, the forces and moments acting on each wetted part-the cavitator, fins, and vehicle body-were obtained by physical modeling. The planing force-the interaction force between the vehicle transom and cavity wall-was calculated using the apparent mass of the immersed vehicle transom. We integrated each model and constructed an equation of motion for the supercavitating system. We performed numerical simulations using the integrated dynamics model to analyze the characteristics of the supercavitating system and validate the modeling completeness. Our research enables the design of high-quality controllers and optimal supercavitating systems.

  • The complex, unsteady, self-sustained pressure oscillations induced by supersonic flow past a rectangular cavity is investigated using numerical simulations. The present numerical study is performed using a parallel, multiblock solver for the two-dimensional, compressible NavierStokes equations. Open cavities with length-to-depth (L / D) ratio in the range 0.5 - 3.3 are considered. This paper sheds light on the cavity physics, cavity oscillatory mechanism, and the organisation of vortical structures inside the cavity. The vortex shedding phenomenon, the shear layer impingement event at the aft wall and the movement of the acoustic/compression wave within the cavity are well predicted. The vortical structures· and the source of the acoustic disturbances are found to be located near the aft wall of the cavity. With the increase in the cavity length, strong recompression of the flow near the aft wall leading to a sudden jump in the cavity form drag is observed. The estimated cavity tones are in good agreement with the available semiempirical relation. Multiple peaks are noticed in deep and long cavities. For the present freestream Mach number 1.71, it is observed that around L/D=2.0, the cavity oscillatory mechanism changes from the transverse to longitudinal oscillatory mode. The effects of this transition on various fluid dynamics and acoustic properties are also discussed.

  • A new passive control technique of cavity-induced pressure oscillations has been investigated numerically for a supersonic two-dimensional flow over open rectangular cavities at Mach number 1.83 just upstream of a cavity, in which a sub-cavity system is installed on the backward-facing step of the main cavity. A third-order TVD (Total Variation Diminishing) finite difference scheme with MUSCL is used to discretize the spatial derivatives in the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The results obtained show that the present sub-cavity system is very effective in reducing cavity-induced pressure oscillations. The results also showed that the resultant amount of attenuation of cavity-induced pressure oscillations was dependent on the length and thickness of the flat plate, and also on the depth of the sub-cavity used as an oscillation suppressor.

  • The optimal thermal design of a single heat source on one wall of a vertical open top cavity was studied experimentally. The temperature and flow fields in the cavity were visualized. The objectives of this study is to obtain the best location of the single heat source and to examine the effects of heat source protrusion, substrate thermal conductivity and cavity aspect ratio on the natural convection cooling due to a single heat source. As the results, the cooling effect for the copper substrate is superior to that of the epoxy-resin substrate and is improved with increasing cavity width. For the epoxy-resin substrate of lower conductivity, the protrusion of the heaters plays a role in decreasing the cooling effect. The best location was the mid-height of the substrate.
