By analysis of pyruvic acid and sugar levels in bulbs, leaf sheaths, and leaves, and with regard to phyllotaxis, it was shown that the lower portion of each plant component had the greatest pyruvic acid content, the upper portion less, and the middle portion the lowest. When bulb scales were examined, pyruvic acid content was lowest in the second bulb scale from the papery scale. Pyruvic acid level increased toward the inner portion of the bulb. Pyruvic acid levels in leaf sheaths and leaves were greater than those in the bulb during the early stages of bulb growth. However, at harvest, the pyruvic acid content of bulbs increased slightly, whereas those of leaf sheaths and leaves decreased markedly. Tissue sugar contents were similar at the beginning of bulb growth. However, bulb sugar content increased greatly as the bulb grew, and sugar contents of leaf sheaths and leaves decreased. With respect to phyllotaxis, outer older leaves had the lowest total sugar and pyruvic acid contents. Young leaves showed a tendency to have less pyruvic acid and sugar compared with mature leaves.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is an economically important vegetable crop worldwide. However, various fungal diseases, including Fusarium basal rot (FBR), neck rot, and white rot, reduce onion production or bulb storage life. FBR caused by Fusarium species is among the most destructive onion diseases. In this study, we identified Fusarium species associated with FBR in Jeolla and Gyeongsang Provinces in South Korea and evaluated fungicides against the pathogens. Our morphological and molecular analyses showed that FBR in onions is associated with Fusarium commune, Fusarium oxysporum, and Fusarium proliferatum. We selected seven fungicides (fludioxonil, hexaconazole, mandestrobin, penthiopyrad, prochloraz-manganese, pydiflumetofen, and tebuconazole) and evaluated their inhibitory effects on mycelial growth of the pathogens at three different concentrations (0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/mL). We found that prochloraz-manganese was highly effective, inhibiting 100% of the mycelial growth of the pathogens at all concentrations, followed by tebuconazole. Fludioxonil showed < 50% inhibition at 1 mg/mL for the tested isolates.

Leaf blight disease caused by Stemphylium species is an important disease in Allium crops, specifically onion, garlic and welsh onion. In 2018, leaf blight symptoms were severe and damaged onion and garlic in Jeonnam province in Korea. In addition, small purple spots on garlic burbs were observed in a post-harvest storage warehouse. Several Stemphylium isolates were isolated from diseased leaves from the field and from garlic bulb samples and were analyzed in terms of homology and the phylogenetic relationship based on the internal transcribed spacer region and calmodulin gene sequence. The results showed that among three Stemphylium species identified, S. vesicarium is most prevalent on onion and garlic. S. eturmiunum was for the first time identified as pathogenic to onion and garlic, whereas S. solani was found in welsh onion crops. Although these isolates grew well at the optimum temperature at 20 - 25℃, they could also grow at low temperatures of 10 - 15℃. A pathogenicity test was conducted using S. vesicarium and S. eturmiunum on onion and garlic respectively. These results showed that two Stemphylium species were highly virulent with cross pathogenicity in onion and garlic. The results of this study can support the biological characterization of Stemphylium species in Korea. Moreover, further research will need to develop fungicide application strategies for onion and garlic crops.
This study was conducted to develop the most effective method in promoting onion set in cultivars 'Josaengsseondebol' and 'Daeji' for all year-round production. This was done by extending the day length for 41 days. For both cultivars, the period to reach the maximum number of leaves developed was shortened as the exposure to day length increased. Between the two cultivars, 'Josaengsseondebol' reaches its maximum leaf formation for a shorter duration compared with 'Daeji'. In effect to bulb size, cultivar 'Josaengsseondebol' having a night break of 1, 2, and 16 hours light condition had better bulb enlargement compared with the non-treated bulbs. In the case of cultivar 'Daeji', only bulbs exposed to a night break of 2 and 16 hours light condition had better bulb enlargement. The percentage of marketable set yield in cultivar 'Josaengsseondebol' having a night break of 1 hr, 2 hrs, 16 hrs light condition, and control or untreated bulbs were 84%, 92%, 90%, and 6% respectively. In the case of cultivar 'Daeji', treated with a night break of 1 hr, 2 hrs, 16 hrs light condition, and untreated bulbs had a percentage marketable set yield of 7%, 55%, 64%, and 0% respectively. Based on these results, it is therefore concluded that night break treatment is considered to be effective method in promoting off-season onion set cultivation in cultivar 'Josaengsseondebol'.
New onion hybrid cultivar, "Yeongpunghwang" was developed from cross between "MOS8", male sterile line and "Mokpo 11", pollen line by Mokpo Sub-Station, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, RDA in 2008. The crossing line was performed yield test in 2003. IT was evaluated as "Mokpo 11" in the regional yield trial test(RYT) from 2006 to 2008 during three years. This line is semi-erect plant growth type and has green leaf colour. It has broad ovate bulb shape and yellow skin colour in bulb characteristics. Plant height, leaf number, and bolting rate was 78cm, 7.9, and 3.9%, respectively. Lodging date as harvesting indicator was on 26 May. The yield potential of "Yeongpunghwang" was out-yielding 6% compare to check variety ("Sunpower") by with 8,344 kg/10a in RYT. It showed moderated cold hardness in all regional location which was conducting RYT, including Muan, Goheung, Changyeong and Andong. So this variety was recommend as a leading variety at southern area of korea.
The study was conducted to investigate the effect of the culture with trickle with trickle irrigation in transparent vinyl house on the seed productivity of onion. Growth, number o tiller and leavers, plant height, leaf sheath length, flowering rate, diameter of flower wheel, number of little flower per flower stalk and fertilization rate are best in the case of the seed production under the culture with trickle irrigation in transparent vinyl mulching house, catch in the rain with vinyl from February to March, so it is found that it is appropriate to plant the onion mother bulb under the culture with trickle irrigation in transparent vinyl mulching house, catch in the rain with vinyl from February to March in the Southern areas of Korea.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of mulching material and planting density on growth and bulb development of shallot. The transparent PE film was better than black PE film as a mulching material for the overwintering shallot crop. Transparent PE film mulching promoted plant growth and increased marketable yield by 21% as compared with that of the black PE film-mulched crop. However, the bulb size was not significantly affected by the type of mulching film. The height and width of ridge and planting density significantly affected the growth and bulb yield of the moisture sensitive shallot. Bulb yield of the shallot planted in five rows in 120 cm wide ridges (20,833 plants per 10 a) was 1,332 kg per 10 a, which was 1.7 times as high as that by the crop grown in three rows in 120 cm wide ridges (12,500 plants per 10 a). In conclusion, the shallot crop is recommended to be cultivated in five rows in 120 cm ridges mulched with the transparent PE film.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of slow-release fertilizer application on quality elevation of onion (Allium cepa L.) in southwestern sea. The slow-release fertilizers used were NIAST (National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology) I, II, CDU (Crotonylidene Diurea), UF (Urea-Formaldehydes), and IBDU (Isobutylidene Diurea) 30, 50. Growth of the onion plant treated with slow-release fertilizer showed better than the control. However, a rate of infected plant to downy mildew was low as compared with control. Chlorophyll and total nitrogen contents were high in control, whereas firmness, soluble solid content, number and thickness of scaly leaves were high in slow-release fertilizer plot. In early maturing onion, total marketable bulb yield was higher in slow-release fertilizer plot than all other fertilizer treatments. Total marketable bulb yield in late maturing onion treated with slow-release fertilizer was slightly decreased. Decaying loss and the rate of sprouting during storage period decreased in slow-release fertilizer application. In summary, application of slow-release fertilizer increased marketable yield, storability after harvest and also reduced labor needs for top dressing.
Bulb onion cultivation area has been restricted in southern part of Korea to avoid blotting and bulb division. The traditional culture method is transplanting bare-rooted plantlet into the field at the end of summer and harvesting at the beginning of next summer. The hot weather and weak plantlets occasionally causes unstable supply of onions in autumn. In order to enlarge cultivation area and to reduce culture period, long nursery system using plug tray and spring transplanting was tried. Forty cultivars collected from Korea and Japan were nursed using 200-plug tray and transplanted to the field in spring. Marketable yield was not related to the seedling size but lodging time. Cultivar of 'Hamasodachi' was lodged early and resulted low marketable yield. Cultivar of 'Cheonjudaego' was not lodged and yielded high but not in accordance with storability. Generally early lodged cultivars showed low storability. In order to avoid rainy harvesting season, cultivars requires excessive long time for lodging is not recommended for spring culture. Using plug nursery and spring transplanting, we successfully produced marketable onions in 3 months. But immediate using of the harvested onion is recommended. The storability of produced onions showed different result among cultivars, storage of spring onion was not recommended.

Red onion cultivar 'Eumjinara' with mild taste and early maturation was developed in 2013 by the Allium vegetable crop research team, National Institute Crop Science, Rural development Administration (RDA). 'Eumjinara' was originally selected from red onion breeding line, 'IS1115', It was preliminarily selected and designated 'Mon21-31-3' and advanced yield trial was performed from 2008 to 2009. Regional yield trial test was conducted in six regions from 2010 to 2012. Foliage morphology and leaf color were similar to those of a check cultivar, 'Cheonjujeok', but its shape was comparatively broad ovate. Foliage of 'Eumjinara' lodged seven days earlier than check cultivar on May 31 and the average bulb weight ($234{\pm}49.1g/bulb$) was also higher than that of check cultivar. The new cultivar was relatively resistant to clod hardness and downy mildew infection in the field condition. Average yield of 'Eumjinara' in three-year the regional yield trials was 6,999 kg/10a. The total soluble solid contents and quercetin concentrations were $41.43{\mu}g/g$ FW and $556.11{\mu}g/g$ FW, respectively.
