  • A few blast experiments are conducted to investigate the behavior of one-way reinforced concrete(RC) slabs under blast loading. Reflected blast characteristics as well as displacements and damage patterns of RC slabs are measured. Numerical models are also established in the software ANSYS AUTODYN to reproduce the experiments on RC slabs. The numerical models are distinguished from each other by different boundary conditions at the edges of RC slabs, which are assumed to reproduce displacements and damage patterns resulted from the experiments. The boundary condition of the experimental tests is estimated from the numerical simulation results. From the numerical simulation results, the boundary condition should be improved in order to measure the accurate maximum displacement in the experimental tests.

  • The shear behavior of reinforced concrete structure is one of difficult problems that are not clearly identified theoretically despite the efforts of researchers for several years. Since bending and shear strength of hollow slab may decrease due to hollow part inside slab, prediction of such structure performance is very important. Presently the formulas of shear designing standard expressions of each country are formulas by experiment for hollow slab. In this study, the shear behavior of one-way hollow slab by reinforcement ratio were analyzed through experiment to conduct studying on estimation of shear strength, and then shear strength formulas of hollow slab were compared and analyzed.

  • In this study, for one-way concrete slabs, the flexural strength, deflection, and crack width according to the amount of reinforcing bars were compared for the cases of using steel reinforcing bars and CFRP reinforcing bars. Critical performance dominating the flexural design was investigated and how to design the CFRP-reinforced concrete slab with efficiency was also discussed. It was found that CFRP-reinforced concrete slabs could achieve greater design flexural strength with the same amount of reinforcing bars compared to those using steel rebar, while deflection and crack width were relatively much larger. In concrete slabs using CFRP reinforcing bars, it was confirmed that the maximum crack width acts as a dominant factor in the design. For more efficient flexural design, it is necessary to mitigate the allowable crack width to 0.7 mm and to apply smaller diameter reinforcing bars to control the crack width.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a rational analytical method for predicting the behavioral characteristics from crack occurrence to fracture for a one-way CFRP grid reinforced concrete slab specimen. A total of four specimens were selected by Zhang et al.(2004) as the main experimental variables for CFRP grid amount, material properties and loading method. Analysis was performed through the Nonlinear Finite Element analysis program(RCAHEST), which applied the newly modified constitutive relational equations by the author. The mean and coefficient of variation for maximum moment from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 1.38 and 7 %. The mean and coefficient of variation for displacement corresponding maximum moment from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 1.41and 9.8 %. The prediction results for the behavioral characteristics from crack occurrence to fracture were verified and evaluated. It is judged that additional research is needed to secure various experimental results and to develop a more reliable analytical method.

  • Although much research has been carried out using recycled aggregates sourced from normal strength concrete, most of the buildings to be demolished are constructed with low strength concrete. Therefore, the properties of the concrete incorporating recycled aggregates, sourced from the waste of structural elements cast with low strength concrete, were investigated in this study. Four different concrete mixtures were designed incorporating natural and recycled aggregates with and without fly ash. The results of the mechanical and durability tests of the concrete mixtures are presented. Additionally, full-scale one-way reinforced concrete slabs were cast, using these concrete mixtures, and subjected to bending test. The feasibility of using conventional reinforced concrete theory for the slabs made with structural concrete incorporating recycled aggregates was investigated.

  • To predict the damage of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures from mass explosion, Pressure-Impulse (P-I) curves representing the relationship between peak pressure and impulse based on damage criteria are essential. There are P-I curves developed by the U.S. DoD without detailed explanation regarding validation. In this study, full scale explosion tests were conducted measuring response of RC slab to modify and validate pre-existing P-I curves. Four same RC slabs were prepared, and placed at different distances, which are fixed to steel frame with concrete base. Scaled distances were selected to show different failure types using P-I curve based on Single Degree Of Freedom (SDOF) model. It was found that SDOF model can be used to evaluate and identify one-way RC slab damage with difference damage criteria.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) in order to investigate the flexural performance of one-way slabs strengthened by epoxy-bonded steel plates. Four point loading scheme is selectively chosen. A model is developed to implement the material constitutive relationships and non-linearity. Five Slabs were modeled in FEM software using ABAQUS. One slab was unstrengthened control slab and the others were strengthened with steel plates with varying the plate thickness and configuration. In order to verify the accuracy of the numerical model, a comparison was done between the experimental results available in the literature and the proposed equations by ACI 318-11 for the calculation of ultimate load capacities of strengthened slabs, the agreement has proven to be good and FEA attained accurate results compared with ACI code. A parametric study was also carried out to investigate the influence of thickness of steel plate, strength of epoxy layer and type of strengthening plate on the performance of plated slabs. Also, the practical and technical feasibility of splitting the steel plate in strengthening process has been taken into account. For practical use, the author recommended to use bonded steel plate as one unit rather than splitting it to parts, because this saves more effort and reduces the risk of execution errors as in the case of multiple bonded parts. Both techniques have nearly the same effect upon the performance of strengthened slabs.

  • In recent years, the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures has become a serious problem in civil engineering fields. This situation is mainly due to corrosion of steel reinforcing bars embedded in concrete. Recently, there has been a greatly increased demand for the use of FRP (fiber reinforced plastic) in civil engineering field due to their superior mechanical and physical properties. This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with FRP Box, FRP Plate, and FRP Re-bar. In tlIe study, mechanical properties of FRP Box, FRP Plate, GFRP Re-bar, and CFRP Grid have been investigated. Full scale one-way deck slab was tested under four point lateral load (equivalent to actual wheel load of DB-24 including impact). Load-deflection and load-strain data were collected through LVDT's and strain gages attached to the specimen.

  • Fibre-reinforced self-compacting concrete (FRSCC) is a high-performance building material that combines positive aspects of fresh properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) with improved characteristics of hardened concrete as a result of fibre addition. To produce SCC, either the constituent materials or the corresponding mix proportions may notably differ from the conventional concrete (CC). These modifications besides enhance the concrete fresh properties affect the hardened properties of the concrete. Therefore, it is vital to investigate whether all the assumed hypotheses about CC are also valid for SCC structures. In the present paper, the experimental results of short-term flexural load tests on eight reinforced SCC and FRSCC specimens slabs are presented. For this purpose, four SCC mixes - two plain SCC, two steel, two polypropylene, and two hybrid FRSCC slab specimens - are considered in the test program. The tests are conducted to study the development of SCC and FRSCC flexural cracking under increasing short-term loads from first cracking through to flexural failure. The achieved experimental results give the SCC and FRSCC slabs bond shear stresses for short-term crack width calculation. Therefore, the adopted bond shear stress for each mix slab is presented in this study. Crack width, crack patterns, deflections at mid-span, steel strains and concrete surface strains at the steel levels were recorded at each load increment in the post-cracking range.

  • Recently, an improved capacity for RC bridges is required by their deterioration or necessary to carry traffic increase. Strengthening is known as a better way to improve capacity of bridges than reconstructing. Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) is introduced as one of the best strengthening structures in this paper. It is also known as an economical improvement. Therefore, FRP sheet and Glass Fiber-Steel Composite Plate (GSP) in this research were used in strengthening slab of RC bridges. Experimental data from the strengthening will be helpful to better understand the slab behavior and an effect of the strengthening.
