PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest a specific investigation guideline to decide priority of repairing old concrete pavements that pile up substantially. METHODS : In this study, a principle of division of homogeneous sections was proposed to reflect the characteristics of the pavement reasonably in the specific investigation results. In addition, a checklist and guideline of field investigation were suggested for the old concrete pavement sections, which require inspection toward their durability and structural performance. Furthermore, the items of laboratory test necessary to the old concrete pavement were suggested based on the existing laboratory test considering characteristics of the old concrete pavement. The present condition of the old concrete pavement could be analyzed by the test results. RESULTS : A method of division of homogeneous sections suitable for the specific investigation of the old concrete pavement was suggested. The proportions of distress severity of pavement sections were compared by distress type to figure out the present state of the old concrete pavement. Scaling, durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), and longitudinal spalling were selected as the most severe distress types. The detailed positions of the sections were also suggested. The checklist of the specific investigation was categorized by field survey and laboratory test, and its evaluation criteria were proposed. The three types of the sections of durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), bridge connection, and asphalt overlay were selected as the sections of the field survey. The compressive strength, void structure, and chloride penetration depth were suggested as the items of the laboratory test. CONCLUSIONS : A fundamental level of the guideline was suggested in this study to resolve the problem of old concrete pavement. Appropriate guidelines related to the repair of the old concrete pavement should be provided by performing additional research efforts.
With the increase in industrialization and urbanization, growing demand has enhanced rate of new constructions and old demolitions. To avoid serious environmental impacts and hazards recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) is being adopted in all over the world. This paper investigates successive recycled coarse aggregates (SRCA) in which old concrete made with RCA in form of concrete cubes was used. The cubes were crushed to prepare new concrete using aggregates from crushing of old concrete, used as SRCA. The mechanical behavior of concrete was determined containing SRCA; the properties of SRCA were evaluated and then compared with natural aggregates (NA). Replacement of NA with SRCA in ratio upto 100% by weight was studied for workability, mechanical properties and microstructural analysis. It was observed that with the increase in replacement ratio workability and compressive strength decreased but in acceptable limits so SRCA can be used in low strength concretes rather than high strength concrete structures.

When recycled aggregate with old mortar and particles is used in concrete mixing, such aggregates can affect hydration reaction by promoting or inhibiting it. In this study, the possibility of hydration reaction on old mortar and particle was analyzed. Hydration reaction was carried out in old mortar that is finely crushed by an impact machine in the production of recycled aggregates, and it was found that this did have an impact on the strength development of concrete. Unlike in old cement, the hydration reaction did not progress in the particles, and it had high amounts of silica powder and calcium carbonate. In conclusion, the old mortar can have the influence of improving compressive strength, but the particles can delay the setting time of recycled aggregate concrete.

The purpose of this study is to identify the various characteristics of the 53-years old railway tunnel linning concrete. The nondestructive technique such as the surface hardness method and the ultrasonic method, the extent of carbonation by the phenolphthalein indicator, and the chemical analysis due to XRD/XRF are considered Also the concrete core was cut in two pieces per tunnel for the exact evaluation of strength. On the basis of the experimental result, it is concluded that the durability and the serviceability of old tunnel linning concrete are affected by the initial mixing condition and the environmental effect.

The rapid development of road transport has increased the number of bridges that require widening. A critical issue in the construction of bridge widening is the influence of vibrations of the old bridge on the casting of wet joint concrete between the old and new bridges owing to the running traffic. Typically, the bridge is closed to traffic during the pouring of wet joint concrete, which negatively affects the existing transportation network. In this study, a newly developed microscopic traffic load modeling approach and the vehicle-bridge interaction theory are incorporated to develop a refined numerical framework for the analysis of random traffic-bridge coupled dynamics. This framework was used to investigate traffic-induced vibrations at the wet joint of a widened bridge. Based on an experimental study on the vibration resistance of wet joint concrete, traffic control strategies were proposed to ensure the construction performance of cast-in-site wet joint concrete under random traffic without interruption. The results show that the vibration displacement and frequency of the old bridge, estimated by the proposed framework, were comparable with those obtained from field measurements. Based on the target peak particle velocity and vibration amplitude of the wet joint concrete, it was found that traffic control measures, such as limiting vehicle gross weight and limiting traffic volume by closing an additional traffic lane, could ensure the construction performance of the wet joint concrete.

In recent years, the construction methods of precast prestressed concrete beam bridges by using tendon have been increasingly proposed. The properties of flexural tensile strength between precast prestressed concrete beam and cast-in-place concrete is an important factor that affects the structural performance. This paper aims at evaluating the tensile strength between old and new concrete. Tensile strength gain, with age after placing new concrete was evaluated. Test results show that the tensile strength between old and new concrete is much smaller than that of monolithic concrete. Also, it is shown that the curing condition of concrete has the tremendous effect on tensile strength.

The rubblization technique is breaking the aged concrete pavement slab into rubblized concrete aggregate, and use it as an base material at its original position, then builds overlay above the rubblized base. This method has been successively used in USA due to the advantage of good contructibility, cost-effectiveness as well as the capability of preventing of reflection cracks. However, constructibility and economic performance of rubblization on typical Korean concrete pavements needed to be investigate since to typical Korean concrete pavements have thick slab, as well include lean concrete subbase course. This stud explored optimum breaking depth and suggested minimum 10cm based on reflection crack simulation test. Also proper head shape and impact energy were investigated based on small breaking field tests. It was found that $127kg/cm^2$ of stress with 52.3% of head contact area are breaking requirement. Also, Multi-head type breaker suitable for Korean condition was designed and developed. This multi-head type breaker was designed to rubblize old concrete to the suggested optimum rubblized-depth and rubblized-concrete-aggregate size to prevent reflection crack and maintain high bearing capacity. This machine was used for the test of rubblization of old concrete pavement on a non-use old concrete and a in-serviced road. In these two tests, engineering properties of rubblized base and constructability and cost were investigated. In both tests, the old concrete rubblized to targeted size and depth, and high-level bearing capacity was achieved. Also, superior constructability and lower cost compared with traditional reconstruction was examined.

In predicating the probability distribution of chloride diffusion coefficient of recycled aggregate concrete ($D_{RAC}$), the morphological characteristics of three phases, i.e., the old attached mortar, the natural aggregate and the new mortar, should all be taken into account. The present paper attempts to develop a probability density evolution method (PDEM) to achieve this. After verifying the derived PDEM results with experimental results, the effects of old attached mortar to the $D_{RAC}$ are examined in a quantitative manner. It is found that (1) the variation of the attached mortar content is much sensitive to $D_{RAC}$; (2) given the probability distribution of the content and chloride diffusion coefficient of old mortar, the probability distribution of DRAC can be analysed based on the PDEM; and (3) the critical chloride diffusion coefficient at a certain assurance rate can be obtained by the PDEM. The analysis results of this investigation will be valuable to the durability design for RAC.
In this paper, two dimensional and three dimentional modeling techniques are proposed for the failure analysis of deteriorated reinforced concrete T-girder bridge subjected to cyclic loading up to failure. For the nonlinear failure anaysis, a tension stiffening model which can consider degradation of bond between reinforcement and surrounding concrete due to corrision of rebars in old bridge is proposed and a modeling technique for the supports conditions of the bridges which can consider degradation of bearing at supports in old bridge is also proposed, The analysis results along with comparisons with full-scale failure-test results confirm that finite element modeling techniques in this paper can be well applied to the failure analyses of in-situ old reinforced concrete T-girder bridges subjected to cyclic loading and the support condition modeling especially affects the bridge strength significantly.
