  • The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), which is one of the major greenhouse gases, continues to rise with the increase in fossil fuel consumption. In order to mitigate global warming the amount of CO2 discharge to the atmosphere must be reduced. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology is now regarded as one of the most promising options. To complete the carbon cycle in a CCS system, a huge amount of captured CO2 from major point sources such as power plantsshould be transported for storage into the marine or ground geological structures. Since 2005, we have developed technologies for marine geological storage of CO2,including possible storage site surveys and basic design of CO2 transport and storage process. In this paper, the design parameters which will be useful to construct on-shore and off-shore CO2 transport systems are deduced and analyzed. To carry out this parametric study, we suggested variations in thedesign parameters such as flow rate, diameter, temperature and pressure, based on a hypothetical scenario. We also studied the fluid flow behavior and thermal characteristics in a pipeline transport system.

  • In order to grasp the characteristics of a fishing ground at yeosu bay, the fluctuation in condition of the coast and that in catch by pound nets in the coast were investigated respectively. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The water temperature in spring and summer was higher at the coast side than off shore, but in autumn and winter took the reverse. 2. The salinity was higher in spring and winter than in summer and autumn. A lower salinity zone was found at the Dolsan Do coast and higher ones were made off shore. 3. A eddy current was found at the Dolsan Do coast and a thermocline were made at the depth of 30 to 40 m in summer. But in autumn and winter the water became homogeneous. 4. The annual catch by the pound net was highest in 1984 and then decreased gradually. The monthly catch was highest in June and then decreased gradually. 5. The catches seemed to increase with the sea water temperature and salinity, and great catch was shown in 21$^{\circ}C$ to 27$^{\circ}C$ and 33.80% to 34.00%. 6. The component rate of fishes was 28.4% in spanish mackerel, 17.9% in anchovy, 19.5% in horse mackerel, 21.0% in sardine, 7.2% in hairtail, and 1% in common mackerel. 7. The fishes appeared continuously on way of fishing operation were spanish mackerel, hairtail, Yellow talil, crab, etc. An anchovy and sardine were caught mainly from March to July or August, horese mackerel and common mackerel from May to November. but puffer, swell fish, saury and filefish were caught mainly from April to October. 8. The sum of catch was largest in June, at which the wind direction was NE to SSW, the speed below 3.2m/sec, the atmospheric pressure below 1008mb, and precipitation beyond 154mm.

  • This paper presents a new framework for design and economic evaluation of wind energy-based electricity supply system. We propose a network optimization (mixed-integer linear programming) model to design the underlying energy supply system. In this model we include practical constraints such as land limitations of onshore wind farms and different costs of offshore wind farms to minimize the total annual cost. Based upon the model, we also analyze the sensitivity of the total annual cost on the change of key parameters such as available land for offshore wind farms, required area of a wind turbine and the unit price of wind turbines. We illustrate the applicability of the suggested model by applying to the problem of design of a wind turbines-based electricity supply problem in Jeju. As a result of this study, we identified the major cost-drivers and the regional cost distribution of the proposed system. We also comparatively analyzed the economic performance of on/off shore wind farms in wind energy-based electricity supply system of Jeju.

  • Two hundred suspended-matter samples were collected from the continental shelf off the southeast coast of Korea during September, 1981, March, 1982 and April 1983. Superficial bottom sediments on the shelf were also taken. Based on the alalyses of TSM distribution and concentration patterns, it is considered that finegrained suspended matters are restricted to nearshore-inner shelf showing a band or zone paralleling with coastal morphology. This fact suggests a limitation of "modern" fine grained sediments to a nearshore and inner shelf band. The sand deposits with the lower value of mud content (<5%) adjacent to the shelf break and on the outer shelf would probably be "relict" sediments (old beach sediments) deposited in response to a lower stand of sea level during the Pleistocene ice age. The transgression did little to alter the distribution of sand on the outer shelf in this particular study area. The progress of shore line was so rapid that a given locality was in the beach zone and subject to rapid longshore drift and extensive reworking only for a few years. Probably the most pronounced effect of the transgression was sorting of the sand, and at least partial winnowing out of the finer fractions.

  • The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin Tursiops aduncus commonly inhabits the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. An investigation was conducted using data from vessel sightings and point sightings from land. During 40 days of vessel sighting surveys between 2007 and 2010, a total of 18 dolphin groups were encountered. The overall sighting rate was 0.01 group/n.m. Most Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins were sighted within 500 m of the northern coast of Jeju Island during surveys. Also, dolphin groups were observed 47 times during 109 days of shore-based surveys conducted between 2011 and 2015. The results of a dolphin distribution survey conducted in 2011 were generally similar to the results of previous surveys. However, there were no dolphin sightings from 2012 in Hanllim-eup, in the north-western part of the island, where dolphins were sighted frequently until 2011, whereas dolphin observations increased in the southern part of the island. The mean group size was 35.4 (SD=18.08) individuals. The most frequently sighted group size was 36-40 individuals. To conserve resident dolphins off Jeju Island, long term sighting surveys and environmental assessment are required to monitor their distribution patterns.

  • The dynamics of phytoplankton abundance with seasonal variation in physicochemical conditions were investigated monthly at 10 stations around the Chagwi-do off the west coast of Jeju Island, Korea, including inshore, middle shore, and offshore in the marine ranching are a from September 2004 to November 2005. Water temperature varied from 12.1 to $28.9^{\circ}C$ (average $18.8^{\circ}C$), and salinity from 28.9 to 34.9 psu (average 33.7 psu). The chlorophyll a concentration was $0.02-2.05\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ (average $0.70\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), and the maximum concentration occurred in the bottom layer in April. A total of 294 phytoplankton species belonging to 10 families was identified: 182 Bacillariophyceae, 52 Dinophyceae, 9 Chlorophyceae, 12 Cryptophyceae, 6 Chrysophyceae, 4 Dictyophyceae, 13 Euglenophyceae, 6 Prymnesiophyceae, 5 Prasinophyceae, and 5 Raphidophyceae. The standing crop was $2.21-48.69\times10^4\;cells\;L^{-1}$ (average $9.23\times10^4\;cells\;L^{-1}$), and the maximum occurred in the bottom layer in April. Diatoms were most abundant throughout the year, followed by dinoflagellates and phytoflagellates. A phytoplankton bloom occurred twice: once in spring, peaking in April, and once in autumn, peaking in November. The spring bloom was represented by four Chaetoceros species and Skeletonema costatum; each contributed 10-20% of the total phytoplankton abundance. The autumn bloom comprised dinoflagellates, diatoms, and phytoflagellates, of which dinoflagellates were predominant. Gymnodinium conicum, Prorocentrum micans, and P. triestinum each contributed over 10% of the total phytoplankton abundance.

  • Dam construction in a river can change its hydrological pattern and trap sediments, which results in ecological changes in the downstream. It is a common phenomenon in the downstream of dams to have decreased sediment flow and increased periphyton. Artificial floods and sediment application are suggested as mitigation practices in order to simulate natural process of flood; transporting sediment and sloughing periphyton off. In this study the effects of artificial floods on periphyton were examined by applying sand artificially and discharging water from a dam (Yangyang Dam, Korea). The study area has been suffering from turbidity problems caused by shore erosion of the dam. The accumulation of inorganic sediments and increase of periphyton on the river bottom are the major factors of habitat deterioration in the downstream reaches. Artificial flood and artificial addition of sand was performed in summer and the effects were measured. Piles of applied sands were washed off easily by discharge and it enhanced the periphyton sloughing effect. The removal efficiency of periphyton was 50 ~ 80% within the 2 km reach from the dam. In conclusion artificial floods and sand application can be a good mitigation measure for the habitat rehabilitation after a dam construction in streams.

  • The distributions of copepods and chaetognaths in waters off the southern coast of Korea were investigated to evaluate their reliability as indicator species of different water masses. The samples for this study were collected vertically from about 5m above the bottom at 28 stations along 8 transects in three different months, February, April, and August, 1988. The sampling gear used was 0.45-meter NORPAC plankton net fitted with 0.33mm mesh. Acartia clausi, Centropages abdominalis, and Sagitta crassa were found to be reliable indicator species of neritic cold waters; Pleuromamma gracilis, Undinula darwini, Calocalanus plumulosus, Calanopia elliptica, and Sagitta enflata were of oceanic warm waters; Temora discaudata and Centropages furcatus were of neritic warm waters. According to the cluster analyses of the species found, the distinctive area in February was divisible into two regions or water masses, the coastal and off-shore regions; in April, however, it was divisible into four regions. In August, it was divisible into three areas, further indicating the strength of the Kuroshio tributaries pushing toward the coast.

  • This paper focuses on the design and control of a new concept for wind turbines with a planetary gearbox to realize a power split. This concept, where the generated wind power is split into two parts, is to increase the utilization of the wind power and may be particularly suitable for large scale off-shore wind turbines. In order to reduce the cost of the power electronic devices, a synchronous generator, which is driven by the planetary gear, is directly connected to the power grid without electronic converter. A servo drive, which functions as the control actuator, is connected to the power grid by a power electronic converter. With small scale power electronic device, the current harmonics can also be reduced. The speed of the main shaft is controlled to track the optimal tip speed ratio. Meanwhile the speed of the synchronous generator is controlled to stay at the synchronous speed. The minimum rated power of the servo motor and the converter, is studied and discussed in this paper. Different variants of the wind turbine with a planetary gear are also compared. The controller for optimal tip speed ratio and synchronous speed tracking is given.

  • It is undeniable that IUU Fishing are threatening so many legal fishermen' economic livelihood, negatively impact on conservation and protection of the fishery stock and ecosystem itself. Especially, negative impact of IUU Fishing resulted from the increasing fishery activities on the high seas. The Korea case of Coastal and Off-shore Fisheries, difficulties in conserving and controlling the fishery stock was brought about. Simultaneously, it is the fact that there are so many damage such as the reduction of fish Stock management program's effect, dissatisfaction of legal fishermen, over-exploiting of fish stock. Related with this kind of problem, FAO had adopted "International Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing(2001)". From this reason, Korea also needs to make actual efforts to prevent IUU Fishing. i.e. each nation should develop Korea action plan by Feb. 2004 and impliment it, report on implementation toward FAO. This Paper will review the definition of the IUU stipulated by "International Plan of Action on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing" and study Korea cases of the IUU fishing. Finally, the analysis of Korea's implementation will be done, centering around the contents stated on the International Action Plan. The significance of this paper is to grope the political countermeasures against international movement of the IUU fishing prevention.
