The effect of built-in volume ratio of expander on the performance of a two-loop Rankine cycle system for engine waste heat recovery of vehicle has been investigated. In the case of positive displacement expander in the various operating condition of the vehicle, it can operate in both under-expansion and over-expansion conditions. Therefore, the analysis of off-design performance for the expander is very important. Furthermore, the volume and weight of the expander as well as the efficiency must be considered in the optimization of the expander. This study shows that the built-in volume ratio of expander causing under-expansion at a target condition is more desirable considering the off-design performance and size of the expander, based on the simple modeling of off-design operation of the expander.

In this study, we investigated the main characteristics of off-gas generated from melting process and off-gas treatment system operation example to provide some primary data for commercial vitrification facility design. The purpose of vitrification facility operation is to treat hazardous materials in the radioactive wastes and harmful off-gas containing a variety of chemical species generated in the glass melting process. Constructing and operating vitrification facility essentially need to be licensed through safety analysis; it is very important to treat radionuclide and hazardous materials below the legal environment emissions regulation level. We must accurately understand the characteristics of off-gas and apply an appropriate off-gas treatment process accordingly. Thus, to design the appropriate off-gas treatment there must be a wide range of elements taken into account such as characteristics of waste and melter, regulation guidance of off-gas, characteristics of generated off-gas and off-gas treatment system performance assessment.

Design of 500W class UMGT(Ultra Micro Gas Turbine) for power generation is conducted. Basic design parameters are obtained by cycle analysis. Off-design performances are predicted by 1D aerodynamic design and 1D performance analysis of compressor and turbine. 3D impellers are designed and 3D performance analysis is carried out to predict the performance characteristics of UMGT. 1D and 3D performance analysis show similar results. Structure analysis is conducted to select materials. Titanium Alloy is proposed for structural stability.

The genetic algorithm (GA) is regarded as one of the best ways for determining a global solution. Because it does not require calculating the design sensitivity differently from the ordinary gradient-based method, it is appropriate for the design problem in the ultra-high frequency range; the ordinary gradient-based method has difficulty in calculating the sensitivity in this range. This paper deals with nano-aperture grating topology optimization based on the GA and the ON/OFF method. The objective of this study is to maximize the transmittance in the measuring area. The simulation and optimization processes are carried out by using the commercial package COMSOL associated with Matlab programming. The final optimal design gives around 21% performance improvement, compared with the initial model.

Recently the use of Pd catalyst have been continued to expand because of cost avaliabilityand performance advantages. Especially the Pd+Rh catalyst instead of the Pt+Rh catalyst had been used for most of three way catalysts because of the more stringent emission standards and its higher temperature effectiveness. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the design parameter impacts on the Pd+Rh cat-alyst for the automotive exhaust catalysts application. This study was investigated on the catalyst efficiency for the volume and the precious metal loading of the Pd+Rh ceramic monolithic cata-lyst. And experiments concerning the effects of volume and precious metal loading on Pd+Rh three way catalysts were conducted to examined the catalyst light-off temperature and conver-sion efficiency on higher volume demonstrated almost similar performance. But their effects on higher precious metal loading demonstrated considerably better performance.

Usually, on/off control method is a way to control the thruster. Bang-Bang Control, PWM(Pulse Width Modulator) and PWPF(Pulse Width Pulse Frequency) are widely used as a typical way. When we are designing PWPF, the incorrectly designed parameters($K_m$, ${\tau}$, $U_{on}$, $U_{off}$, $U_m$) make trouble, such as the phase lag, the wasted fuel, the reduced system life. Therefore, the effect of parameters on the system performance should be analyzed before the proper parameters are selected. In this paper, we suggest the PWPF parameters design method by performing a static analysis, and analyze the interactive effects on design parameters by performing a dynamic analysis and simulation.
This paper presents the trade-off relationship between area and performance in the hardware design space exploration for the Korean national standard 128-bit block cipher algorithm SEED. In this paper, we compare the following four hardware design types of SEED algorithm : (1) Design 1 that is 16 round fully pipelining approach, (2) Design 2 that is a one round looping approach, (3) Design 3 that is a G function sharing and looping approach, and (4) Design 4 that is one round with internal 3 stage pipelining approach. The Design 1, Design 2, and Design 3 are the existing design approaches while the Design 4 is the newly proposed design in this paper. Our new design employs the pipeline between three G-functions and adders consisting of a F function, which results in the less area requirement than Design 2 and achieves the higher performance than Design 2 and Design 3 due to pipelining and module sharing techniques. We design and implement all the comparing four approaches with real hardware targeting FPGA for the purpose of exact performance and area analysis. The experimental results show that Design 4 has the highest performance except Design 1 which pursues very aggressive parallelism at the expanse of area. Our proposed design (Design 4) shows the best throughput/area ratio among all the alternatives by 2.8 times. Therefore, our new design for SEED is the most efficient design comparing with the existing designs.
In this study, to investigate the effect of the generalized performance curve on the performance prediction and to find the optimal ones, a systematic study is performed. For this purpose, we compared the influence of the stage performance curves with experimental data in multi-stage axial compressors. As a result, it is discovered that the optimal generalized performance curves vary according to the number of the stages in compressors. And we found that for a low-stage compressors, Muir's pressure coefficient curve gives the best prediction results at design rotational frequency regardless of the efficiency curve. On the other hand, for high-stage compressors, Stone's pressure coefficient curve gives the optimistic results about the performance prediction at design rotational frequency.

This paper reports a filtered velocity feedback(FVF) controller, which is an alternative to direct velocity feedback(DVFB) controller. The instability problems due to high frequency response under DVFB can be alleviated by the suggested FVF controller. The FVF controller is designed to filter out the unstable high frequency response. The FVF controller and the dynamics of clamped beams under forces and moments are first formulated. The effects of the design parameters(cut-off frequency, gain, and damping ratio) on the stability and the performance are then investigated. The cut-off frequency should be selected not to affect the system stability. The magnitude of the open loop transfer function(OLTF) at the cut-off frequency should be small. As increasing the gain of the FVF controller, the magnitude of the OLTF is increased, so that the closed loop response can be reduced more. The enhancement of the OLTF at the cut-off frequency is reduced but the phase behavior around the cut-off frequency is distorted, as the damping ratio is increased. The control performance is finally estimated for the clamped beam. More than 10 dB reductions in velocity response can be achieved at the modal frequencies from the first to eighth modes.
