  • The aim of study was to provide the preliminary data to find out characteristics of the difference between both refractive errors through analysis of ocular components variation. We measured spherical equivalent power and corneal radius with KR-8800, and axial length and anterior chamber depth with IOL Master, and the difference of measuring values between the right eye and left eye was applied as the absolute values in 100 adults aged 20~59 years. In all participants, the most common results showed that spherical equivalent power was $-1.83{\pm}2.17D$, axial length was 23.00~24.99mm, corneal radius was 7.50~7.89mm, and anterior chamber depth was 3.60~4.09mm. There are significant correlations between both eyes in axial length and anterior chamber depth with the difference of both spherical equivalent power. The difference of both axial lengths was the biggest with the difference of both refractive errors, and shown the highest correlation. The convergence complex study through classification by aspects is needed since the difference of both refractive errors is closely related with ocular components variation, and poor visual function would be caused by the difference of both refractive errors.

  • Purpose: We have analyzed the transmittance distribution of the ocular lens using local transmittance microscope to investigate the optical homogeneity of the lens. Methods: The transmittance of the laser which is focused on the surface of the ocular lens was measured by using the photo-detector and lock-in amplifier and analyzed. Multi-coated, uncoated, and progressive lenses were analyzed. Results: In the measurement of the progressive lens and a physical stimulated lens, local transmittance microscopy analysis showed a high degree of match with the measurement results through the optical microscope. In addition, the average value of the transmittance is reduced and the standard deviation was increased in the presence of optical defects. In unstimulated lens, there are a large impact on transmittance whether the anti-reflective coating is presence or absence in both the local transmittance microscopy and general transmittance analysis. Conclusions: The distribution of the transmittance measured by local transmission microscopy were changed when the various stimulus is applied to the lenses. These analyzes by local transmission microscopy can be utilized as a way to evaluate or determine the uniformity of the coating film or lens.

  • Videooculography (VOG) is one of the eye-movement measurement methods used for objective evaluation of vestibule -ocular reflex. A key feature of VOG is to estimate accurately the center of pupil and ocular torsion with being less influenced by the upper eyelid droop, eyelashes, corneal reflection, and eye blinks. Especially, it Is important to find the accurate center of the pupil in 3-D VOG because the inaccurate pupil center causes significant errors on measuring torsional eye movement. A new algorithm was proposed to find the center of pupil which is a little influenced by factors mentioned above. In this study, real time three-dimensional VOG which can measure horizontal, vortical, torsional eye movements, and the diameter of pupil was implemented using the proposed method.

  • A total of 181 cases of industrial ocular injuries hospitalized and treated at the St. Mary's Hospital, Seoul during the 5-year period was studied on their epidemiological characteristics. Of these patients 96.7% were males, and 43.6% were in twenties, 49.7% of the cases were injured on left eyes. There were no statistically significant differences in frequencies of study subjects by day of the week and month of the year. Most common injury hour were between 10- <12 AM(13.6%) and between 2- <4 PM(20%). Of the total 101 cases, 37.6% were working less than 6 months, and 73.7%, less than 2 years. Of the total, 42.3% were involved in machinary work and 13.9%, in construction work. According to the American National Standard Method of recording basic facts relating to the nature and occurrence of work injuries, 62%, among all source of injuries was metal item and the most common accident type was struck by flying objects(76.2%). Among 181 cases, only 2 cases were wearing protective equipment when the accidents occurred.

  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, non-immunogenic and non-inflammatory linear polysaccharide, which has been used for various medical applications including arthritis treatment, wound healing, ocular surgery, and tissue augmentation. Because of its mucoadhesive property and safety, HA has received much attention as a tool for drug delivery system development. It has been used as a drug delivery carrier in both nonparenteral and parenteral routes. The nonparenteral application includes the ocular and nasal delivery systems. On the other hand, its use in parenteral systems has been considered important as in the case of sustained release formulation of protein drugs through subcutaneous injection. Particles and hydrogels by various methods using HA and HA derivatives as well as by conjugation with other polymer have been the focus of many studies. Furthermore, the affinity of HA to the CD44 receptor which is overexpressed in various tumor cells makes HA an important means of cancer targeted drug delivery. Current trends and development of HA as a tool for drug delivery will be outlined in this review.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of acupuncture therapy on dry eye syndrome. Methods : We investigated 43 cases of patients with dry eye syndrome. They were treated with acupuncture therapy twice or three times a week. Symptoms score, number of dry eye symptoms, Ocular surface disease index were compared between eyes before and after treatment to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture therapy. Results : After 24 times treatment, symptom score, number of dry eye symptoms, Ocular surface disease index were significantly decreased. Conclusions : Acupuncture therapy was effective to improve symptoms of dry eye syndrome patients. There should be more observation about patients with dry eye syndrome and further study will be needed.

  • Eye irritation, primary skin irritation and skin sensitization tests for Aloewhite were tested in New Zealand White rabbits and Hartley guinea pig. In primary skin irritation test of male New Zealand White rabbits, body weights were not significantly changed and primary Irritation Index(PII) was 0.47, indicating Aloewhite as mildly irritating material, In ocular irritation test, any injury on iris, conjunctival membrane, and cornea in New Zealand White rabbits was not observed. No injuries of the ocular mucous membrane were also recorded. Skin sensitization was tested in guinea Peg after intradermal and epicutaneous induction and graded I with zero % sensitization rate. These results indicate that Aloewhite was not considered to be irritant in test organs of animals.
