  • Objectives : The purpose of this report was to examine the relation between ocular fatigue and dry eye symptoms in patients with ocular fatigue. Methods : 115 patients with ocular fatigue disease were included in this analyses. The study examination included a symptom interview that assessed stiff sense, foreign body sense, pain, soreness, redness, etc. and ocular fatigue. Results : The survey showed in subjective ocular fatigue in all subjects. All patients(115) reported symptoms of ocular fatigue and 25.2% (29/115) were diagnosed as having dry eye with symptoms. Conclusions : These findings suggest that there is a strong between ocular fatigue and dry eye.

  • Ocular injury is one of the commonest causes of eye diseases, but its patterns and incidences are variable according to the environment. Blunt Ocular Trauma is one of causes of ocular injury. Visual disturbance by Blunt Ocular Trauma is rarely reported and we do not know the exact convalescence and healing method of that. We treated a patient suffered from visual disturbance by blunt ocular trauma with herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping treatment. We diagnosed as Blood stasis and noxious water disease. We report a case of visual disturbance by blunt ocular trauma after treatments, we observed the improvement. Based on this study, it is considered that oriental medical treatment can be applied to the management of visual disturbance.

  • This test was performed to evaluate the ocular and skin irritation of EPO (Erythropoietin). The results as follows: 1. Ocular irritation test There were no observed clinical signs, body weght changes by EPO during experimental period. The acute ocular irritation index(A.O.I.), mean ocular irritation index(M.O.I.) and Day-7 individual ocular irritation index(I.O.I.) of EPO at dose of 1000U and 10, 000U were 0, respectively. Therefore we evaluated that EPO was non-toxic to eyes. 2. Skin irritation test There were no observed clinical signs, body weght changes and gross pathologic findings by EPO during experimental period. There were no observed erythema, eschar formation and edema formation on intact and abraded skin treated by EPO. The primary irritation index(P.I.I.) of EPO at dose of 1000U and 10, 000U were 0, respectively and were evaluated none irritating product about skin irritation.

  • In elderly patients, ocular toxoplasmosis is one of the most common etiologies of uveitis, which should be differentially diagnosed from ocular lymphoma, another common pathology of uveitis in older adults. The high level of interleukin (IL)-10 and an IL-10/IL-6 ratio higher than 1 (>1.0) are helpful parameters to diagnose ocular lymphoma. In this study, we used aqueous humor samples to detect 4 cases of ocular toxoplasmosis in patients with high levels of IL-10 and an IL-10/IL-6 ratio higher than 1. Our results show that ocular toxoplasmosis may be associated with increased cytokine levels in aqueous humor.

  • Neuro-ophthalmological findings are common and occasionally prominent features in movement disorders. Accordingly, careful evaluation of the ocular motor functions may provide valuable information in early detection of the diseases and monitoring of the progression. Furthermore, accurate assessment of the abnormal ocular motor findings aids in understanding the pathophysiology and mechanisms of the movement disorders, and in their differential diagnosis. Ocular motility examination should include bedside evaluation and laboratory recording of the fixational abnormalities, saccades, smooth pursuit, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, optokinetic nystagmus, and vergence eye movements. In this review, we will discuss various ocular motor findings in ataxia and parkinsonian syndromes, and hyperkinetic movement disorders.

  • Ocular toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by the infection with Toxoplasma gondii through congenital or acquired routes. Once the parasite reaches the retina, it proliferates within host cells followed by rupture of the host cells and invasion into neighboring cells to make primary lesions. Sometimes the restricted parasite by the host immunity in the first scar is activated to infect another lesion nearby the scar. Blurred vision is the main complaint of ocular toxoplasmic patients and can be diagnosed by detection of antibodies or parasite DNA. Ocular toxoplasmosis needs therapy with several combinations of drugs to eliminate the parasite and accompanying inflammation; if not treated it sometimes leads to loss of vision. We describe here clinical features and currently available chemotherapy of ocular toxoplasmosis.

  • Ocular region recently emerged as a new biometric trait for overcoming the limitations of iris recognition performance at the situation that cannot expect high user cooperation, because the acquisition of an ocular image does not require high user cooperation and close capture unlike an iris image. This study proposes a new method for ocular image recognition based on BRISK (binary robust invariant scalable keypoints). It uses the distance ratio of the two nearest neighbors to improve the accuracy of the detection of corresponding keypoint pairs, and it also uses geometric constraint for eliminating incorrect keypoint pairs. Experiments for evaluating the validity the proposed method were performed on MMU public database. The person recognition rate on left and right ocular image datasets showed 91.1% and 90.6% respectively. The performance represents about 5% higher accuracy than the SIFT-based method which has been widely used in a biometric field.

  • This study was performed to evaluate objective visual quality and ocular scattering in myopic refractive-surgery patients, compared to emmetropes. Optical vision-quality parameters (modulation transfer function (MTF) cutoff and Strehl ratio) and objective scattering index (OSI) were measured using an optical quality analysis system (OQAS II) based on the double-pass technique. In all subjects, the higher the MTF cutoff and Strehl ratio, the lower the OSI and ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs). The MTF cutoff and Strehl ratio for the laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) group were lower than those for the emmetropia group, while the OSI, ocular HOAs, and spherical aberration (SA) for the LASEK group were higher than those for emmetropia group. Ocular scattering would be one of the important factors in regard to visual quality. Therefore, the quality of the retinal image in the LASEK patients has been shown to reduce the quality of vision more than in the emmetropes.

  • Background: Intraoperative and postoperative ocular complications are rare. We retrospectively investigated the abnormal ocular findings in patients who underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Methods: The records were investigated of patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopic surgery at our hospital between January 2018 and March 2019. Ocular complications were confirmed by review of medical records. We performed logistic regression analysis to defined the main factors associated with ocular complications. Results: The overall prevalence of postoperative ocular complications was 8.5% (18/211). A significant association was found between anti-adhesion barrier agent and ocular complications (p=0.020). Conclusions: Anti-adhesion barrier agent used during surgery may be the cause of postoperative ocular complication.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the influence of drug lipophilicity on the extent of ocular and systemic absorption following topical solution instillation in the pigmented rabbit. ${\beta}-Blockers$ of various lipophilicity were chosen as model drugs, $25\;{\mu}l$ of a 15 mM drug solution in isotonic pH 7.4 buffer was instilled, and ocular tissue and plasma drug concentrations were monitored. Ocular absorption was apparently increased in all eye tissues, but non-corneal absorption ratio was decreased by increasing of drug lipophilicity. Systemic bioavailability was ranged from 61% for atenolol to 100% for timolol, and at least 50% of the systemically absorbed drug reached the blood stream from the nasal mucosa. Occluding the nasolacrimal duct for 5 min reduced the extent of systemic absorption of timolol and levobunolol, but did not do so for atenolol and betaxolol. Taken together, the ocular absorption of topically applied ophthalmic drugs would be modest for lipophilic drugs. By contrast, the systemic bioavailability would be modest for drugs at the extremes of lipophilicity, and the nasal contribution to systemically absorbed drug diminished with increasing of drug lipophilicity.
