  • The distribution patterns of estuarine copepods were investigated in the Seomjin River estuary of southern Korea after heavy rains in August 2006. Tidal influence extended 16 km from the estuary mouth. Each estuary zone (Oligohaline salinity <5, mesohaline salinity 5~18, polyhaline salinity >18) changed within a range of about 5~6 km between low and high tides. A total of ten species were recorded, of which Pseudodiaptomus koreanus, Sinocalanus tenellus, and Tortanus dextrilobatus were predominant in the oligohaline zone; Acartia ohtsukai and Acartia forticrusa in the mesohaline zone; and A. erythraea, Calanus sinicus, Centropages dorsispinatus, Labidocera rotunda and Paracalanus parvus s. l. in the polyhaline zone. Their density was fastly reduced in the other zones. In particular, the oligohaline species migrated and aggregated into deeper water during ebb tides in order to retain their populations, while the same tendency was weaker for polyhaline species, suggesting that evolutionary traits primarily control population retention behaviors in estuarine environments.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model. using finite element method. was applied to calculation of the tides and tidal currents of four major tidal constituents($M_2, ;S_2, ;K_1, ;O_1$) in the southern part of the East Sea. The model results were compared with the observed data and with the existing tidal charts. and the computed results showed good agreement with the observation. As a result, the detailed tidal charts for four major tidal constituents and the tidal current ellipses of the M$_2$and $K_1$tides were produced respectively. The results indicate that the amphidromic point of diurnal tide locates near Korean coastal lines closer than that of the chart drawn by Nishida(1980).

  • This paper describes the development of moving watched chamber. For the most part, the watched chamber have been located in the inner-bay. But, there are many problems of sea-water pollution. Therefore, the watched chamber must be relocated to undeveloped coastal area. The watched chamber which is located in the bay has a bit of damage by bad weather. But, the moving watched chamber would be exposed to bad water. It is desirable to improve the system of chamber. If we make a good design of the moving watched chamber with studying of waves and hydrodynamics, it would be possible to culture fish at the coastal sea area. When a fixed system is changed into a movable one, we can obtain the following advantages: 1. The possibility of diminishing the sea water pollution, easying the overcrowded state in a inner-bay farm, and relieved of limitation caused by bad conditions such as waves, red tides and terrains. 2. It would be easy not only to move the watched chamber system in accordance with weather conditions or occurrence of red tides, but also to select good sites for watched chamber fishes. 3. Transportation and good supervision with the automated design system can results with the effectiveness which increases the amount of aquatic products.

  • In order to investigate the paleotidal structure and current pattern in the Yellow and East China seas (YECS) since the late Wisconsin, which is the last glacial maximum period, a two-dimensional version of the Princeton ocean model is used. We assume that subtracting the sea-level differences from the present one can produce paleobasins and that the paleotide did not differ greatly from the present one in the adjacent deep seas, the northwestern Pacific Ocean and the East Sea. We could successfully simulate the paleo-M$_2$ tides and tidal currents of 9000, 11000 and 13000 yr B.P. The result of the model shows considerable differences in the tidal pattern in each period. As the eustatic sea level rose, the amplitudes of the paleotides and the number of the amphidromic points generally increased, but the tidal currents in each paleobasin were strong and about the same order as the present day's. Based on these paleotide calculations, we suggest that there should have been active erosion in the paleobasin as in the present YECS, and the erosion should have played an important role on widening the paleobasin to the present shape, YECS.

  • Thorpe scale analysis was performed using two sets of 25-hour-long hourly CTD data. Raw density profiles collected on the continental slope of the southwestern East Sea were post-processed to reduce instrument noises and measurement errors. Density inversions were detected by applying the overturn ratio test proposed by Gargett and Garner (2008). The value of $K_z$ below the main thermocline estimated with the Osborn parameterization was $5.3{\times}10^{-4}(1.1{\times}10^{-4})m^2s^{-1}$ and that with the Shih parameterization was $5.9{\times}10^{-5}(2.4{\times}10^{-5})m^2s^{-1}$during the spring (neap) tidal period. This result suggests that internal tides can enhance vertical mixing in the observation region.

  • Two-dimensional numerical analysis is performed for the simulation of tidal characteristics related to various development projects in Incheon coastal waters along the west coast of Korea. Field observation of tides and currents was made in order to provide the input boundary and validation data set to the numerical modelling. For the simulation of changes of tides and currents a depth-integrated two-dimensional shallow water model of Flather and Heaps (1975) has been used herein. Tidal model is set up with open boundary sea level from observed two major constituents, M$_2$ and S$_2$. Subsequently the established model is utilized to investigate the effect of two development projects in this region. It has been found that in spring tide the changes of tidal amplitude are small, however, those of tidal current are locally significant.

  • The tides in the Saemanguem Area, the western coast of Korea have been examined based on simulations with barotropic depth-integrated model. As a first step tidal computations were performed with open-boundary sea level forcing from four major constitutents ($M_2$, $S_2$, $K_1$, and $O_1$). Subsequently the established model was utilized to investigate the effect of construction of tidal barriers for Saemanguem development plan on the existing tidal regime. It has been shown that tide of semi-diurnal constituents may be reduced to 2-7 cm in amplitude along the frontal area of proposed barrier. In connection with above changes the tidal current regime may be subjected to significant reduction in intensity. thus suggesting the high possibility of sedimentation along the frontal region of tidal barrier.

  • Satellite-borne altimeters are one of the most important global ocean measurement and monitoring techniques available to modern oceanographers. While the U.S. Navy's GEOdetic SATellite (GEOSAT) mission in the mid-eighties firmly established its value, the full potential of satellite altimetry was not realized until the launch of the NASA/CNES TOPEX/Poseidon precision altimeter in 1992. • A horizontal tow-dimensional version of POM (Princeton Ocean Model) was modified in representing the bottom friction and the open boundary conditions. To simulate the flooding and drying of intertidal flats, a wetting-and-drying scheme was incorporated into the model. The model then was applied to the Chunsu Bay and its adjacent coastal water. Only the water movement due to tides, the dominant forcing in the study area, was considered. This presents the procedure and the results of model calibration and verification for the Chunsu Bay system. The model was calibrated, using the average tidal characteristics in Tide Tables, for the amplitudes and the phases of tidal waves throughout the modeling domain. Calibration results showed that the model gave a good reproduction of tidal waves. The calibrated model was verified using the time-series measurements of surface elevation and current velocity in the summer of 1995. The model reproduced the tides currents very well. calibration and verification results demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing the tidal dynamics in the Chunsu Bay system.
