  • Recently carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) has been used structural materials in corrosive environment such as for water, chemical tank and pipes. However, mechanical properties of such materials may be change when CFRP and exposed to corrosive environment for long periods of time. The degradation behavior of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite material in distilled water is investigated using acoustic emission (AE) technique, Fracture toughness tests are performed on the compact tension specimens that are pilled by two types of $[O_2/9O_2]_{3s}$ and $[O/9O]_6s$. During the testes, AE test was carried out to monitor the damage of CFRP by moisture absorption. The data was treated by 2-parameter Weibull distribution and the fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscope.

  • This study concerns the vibrational behavior of multi-walled nested silicon-carbide and carbon nanotubes using the finite element method. The beam elements are used to model the carbon-carbon and silicon-carbon bonds. Besides, spring elements are employed to simulate the van der Waals interactions between walls. The effects of nanotube arrangement, number of walls, geometrical parameters and boundary conditions on the frequencies of nested silicon-carbide and carbon nanotubes are investigated. It is shown that the double-walled nanotubes have larger frequencies than triple-walled nanotubes. Besides, replacing silicon carbide layers with carbon layers leads to increasing the frequencies of nested silicon-carbide and carbon nanotubes. Comparing the first ten mode shapes of nested nanotubes, it is observed that the mode shapes of armchair and zigzag nanotubes are almost the same.

  • This paper is a presentation of an experimental study about the elastic-partly plastic behavior of rectangular hollow steel pinned struts subjected to static cyclic axial loading and the evaluation of the compressive strength of retrofitted crooked struts. Retrofitting is achieved by welding stiffening plates along the webs of damaged struts. The material follows a quasi-kinematic hardening hysteresis path as observed from coupon tests. Test results are compared to those of an analytical model showing a good agreement for both standard and retrofitted struts. The comparison of different stiffener plate dimensions shows that more efficient strengthening is achieved by using long thin stiffeners rather than short thick ones.

  • In the present paper a three-dimensional non-linear truss element and a short computer program for the modeling and predicting approximate lateral deflections in thin glass plates by the method of incremental loading are proposed. Due to the out-of-plane large deflections of thin glass plates compared to the plate thickness within each loading increment, the equilibrium and stiffness conditions are written with respect to the deformed structure. An application is presented on a thin fully tempered monolithic rectangular glass plate, laterally supported around its perimeter subjected to uniform wind pressure. The results of the analysis are compared with published experimental results and found to have satisfactory approximation. It is also observed that the large deflections of a glass plate lead to a part substitution of the bending plate behavior by a tensioned membrane behavior which is favorable.

  • Using non-destructive Acoustic Emission (AE) and optical Digital Image Correlation (DIC) methods, the moment-curvature behavior of steel and GFRP bars reinforced concrete beams under flexure was explored in this study. In the tension zone, laboratory studies were carried out on steel-RC and GFRP-RC beams with varying percentages of longitudinal reinforcement ratios of 0.33 %, 0.52%, and 1.11%. The distinct mechanism of cracking initiation and fracture progression of failure in steel-RC and GFRP-RC beams were effectively correlated and picked up using AE waveform characteristics of the number of AE hits and their amplitudes, AE energy as well as average frequency and duration. AE XY event plots and longitudinal strain profiles using DIC gives an online and real-time visual display of progressive AE activity and strains respectively to efficaciously depict the crack evolution and their advancement in steel-RC and GFRP-RC beams. They display a close matching with the micro and macro-cracks visually observed in the actual beams at various stages of loading.

  • In this study, an easily recyclable separable glued-laminated timber (GLT)-steel beam was developed, and a structural design method was presented. The GLT and steel were mechanically composited using self-tapping screws. The GLT-steel beam was designed to fail in the compression of GLT. The bending moment and load-carrying capacity of the GLT-steel beam were predicted based on composite beam theory and compared with experimental test data. As a result, the GLT-steel beam exhibited ductile behavior, and compression failure of GLT was observed. The screw connection showed no damage while the steel plate was extended. The load-carrying capacity of GLT after failure was similar to the load resistance predicted by the compressive strength of GLT and the tensile strength of steel. This indicates that the ductile behavior of the GLT-steel beam can be safely designed by the tensile strength (yield) of steel.

  • We investigated the crystalline behavior in active ion implanted silicon through Raman spectroscopy. Four a-Si(amorphous Si) peaks were observed that are related to the ion implantation induced a-Si layer. After the isochronical anneal(30min). and isothermal anneal($450^{\circ}C$), noticeable recovery of crystalline-Si peak at 519cm\ulcorner and peak center shift of the a-Si TO from 465cm\ulcorner to 480cm\ulcorner were observed by RNM(Random Network Model). By applying RNM and SCLM(Spatial Correlation Length Model), the peak center and FWHM(the Full Width at half Maximum) of a-Si were changed dramatically between T\ulcorner=$200^{\circ}C$ and 30$0^{\circ}C$. From the results, it can be said that there is an abrupt structural change at this temperature region.

  • In this study, $(Ba_{0.7}\;Sr_{0.3})TiO_3$ was coated on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si wafer by using Sol-Gel method. Coating process was repeated 3~5 times and then sintered at 750[$^{\circ}C$] for 1 hour. Each specimen was analyzed structure and electrical characteristics. In structure characteristics, EDX analyzed the samples ratio of the formation on the structural property. Thermal behavior was observed with TG-DTA and concluded that the heat-treatment of the samples was degreed 750[$^{\circ}C$]. Surface and section of thin films were observed with SEM.

  • The material properties and the TFT characteristics fabricated on SiOS12T substrate by LPCVD using SiHS14T gas were investigated. The deposition rate showed Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of 31Kcal/mol. And the transition temperature form amorphous to crystalline deposition was observed at 570$^{\circ}C$-580$^{\circ}C$. The strong(220) texture was observed as the deposition temperature increases. XRD analysis showed that the film texture of the as-deposited polycrystalline silicon does not change after annealing at 850$^{\circ}C$. The fabricated TFT's based on the as-deposited amorphous film showed superior electrical characteristics to those of the as-deposited polycrystalline films. It is considered that the different electrical characteristics result from the difference of flat band voltage(VS1FBT) due to the interface trap density between the gate oxide and the active channel.

  • The use of steel pipe dampers (SPD) as fuses or interchangeable elements in the steel moment-resisting frames (MRF) is one of the newest methods for improving seismic performance. In the present study, the performance of steel pipe dampers in MRF has been investigated. Evaluation of MRF with and without SPD models were performed using the finite element method by ABAQUS. For validation, an MRF and MRF with steel pipe dampers were modeled that had been experimentally tested and reported in previous experimental research and a good agreement was observed. The behavior of these dampers in frames of 3, 6, and 9 stories was studied by modeling the damper directly. Nonlinear time history dynamic analysis was used. It was observed that by increasing the number of stories in the buildings, steel pipe dampers should be used to perform properly against earthquakes. The installation of steel pipe dampers in steel moment-resisting frames shows that the drift ratio between the floors is reduced and the seismic performance of these frames is improved.
