Conventional MSE or PSNR based methods for objective picture quality assessment of moving picture coder are not well correlated with subjective human evaluation. In recent years, the design of better objective quality assessment has attracted much intention and several picture quality metrics based on the properties of Human Visual System has been proposed. This paper proposes new metric which is appropriate for objective picture quality assessment of block based moving picture coder by considering frequency sensitivity, inter-intra channel masking and several distortion artifacts caused by block based coding. The experimental results show that the proposed method is good correlated with subjective assessment.
When evaluating the quality of images and displays, it is important to combine the characteristics as perceived by the human visual system and measured by equipment using subjective and objective methods, respectively. In the case of objective methods, the quality of a display is measured using colorimetric or radiometric devices according to existing standards covering the color temperature, gamut size, gamma characteristic, and device characterization. Meanwhile, subjective methods assess the quality of an image using the human visual system based on a comparison with a reference or counterpart using such metrics as the sharpness, noise, contrast, saturation, and color accuracy. Objective and subjective methods are usually used together in comparison, as ultimately it is observers watching images on a display. In addition to existing objective methods, a new image quality metric is also introduced as regards the JPEG compression ratio that is reflected in the relationship between the gamut size and the color fidelity in CIELAB color space.

The radar tomographic imaging is based on the Radar Cross-Section "RCS" of the materials of a shape under examination and investigation. The RCS varies as the conductivity and permittivity of a target, where the target has a different material profile than other background objects in a scene. In this research paper, we use Hierarchical Performance Modeling "HPM" and a framework developed earlier to determine/spot bottleneck(s) for pattern recognition of materials using a combination of the Single Layer Perceptron (SLP) technique and tomographic images in radar systems. HPM provides mathematical equations which create Objective Functions "OFs" to find an average performance metric such as throughput or response time. Herein, response time is used as the performance metric and during the estimation of it, bottlenecks are found with the help of OFs. The obtained results indicate that processing images consumes around 90% of the execution time.

The objective of this paper is to ascertain the existence and uniqueness of common fixed point for four self mappings in intuitionistic Menger metric spaces under some conditions extending to (CLR) property and C-class functions. Some illustrative examples are furnished, which demonstrate the validity of the hypotheses. As an application to our main result, we derive a common fixed point theorem for four self-mappings in metric space. Our results generalize several works, including [4], [20].
In this paper, we suggest reliability as a metric to evaluate the robustness of a design for the optimal design of electromagnetic devices, with respect to constraints under the uncertainties in design variables. For fast numerical efficiency, we applied the sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo simulation (S-MCS) method to perform reliability calculation. Furthermore, we incorporated the S-MCS with single-objective and multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithms to achieve reliability-based optimal designs, undertaking probabilistic constraint and multi-objective optimization approaches, respectively. We validated the performance of the developed optimization algorithms through application to the optimal design of a superconducting magnetic energy storage system.

At present, the significance of a new manufacturing system that can shift from 'mass production' and consider life cycles of a product is pointed out and extremely expected. In such a situation, it is recognized that the modular design, often called 'unit design,' is the important design methodology which realizes the new production system enabling 'cost reduction,' 'flexible production of a multi-functional artifact,' 'settlement of an environmental issue,' and so on. A module (unit) of a product is generally defined as 'the parts group made into the sub-system from a certain specific viewpoint.' So far, there have been many researches related to the modular design. However, they are often limited to a certain viewpoint (objective). This paper proposes a simple but effective method for multi-objective modular design. In the proposed method, a new design metric, called similarity index, is proposed to evaluate the modular design candidates from the multiple viewpoints.

Most existing wavelet-based multiplicative watermarking methods are affected by geometric attacks to a certain extent. A serious limitation of wavelet-based multiplicative watermarking is its sensitivity to rotation, scaling, and translation. In this study, we propose an image watermarking method by using dual-tree complex wavelet transform with a multi-objective optimization approach. We embed the watermark information into an image region with a high entropy value via a multiplicative strategy. The major contribution of this work is that the trade-off between imperceptibility and robustness is simply solved by using the multi-objective optimization approach, which applies the watermark error probability and an image quality metric to establish a multi-objective optimization function. In this manner, the optimal embedding factor obtained by solving the multi-objective function effectively controls watermark strength. For watermark decoding, we adopt a maximum likelihood decision criterion. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method by conducting simulations on benchmark test images. Experiment results demonstrate the imperceptibility of the proposed method and its robustness against various attacks, including additive white Gaussian noise, JPEG compression, scaling, rotation, and combined attacks.
The objective of this study was to describe the development and testing of an initial ecological health assessment model, based on the index of biological integrity (IBI) using fish assemblages, before establishing the final and currently used model for ecological health assessment, conservation and management of freshwater fish in Korea. The initial fish IBI model was developed during 2004~2006 and included 10 metrics, and in 2007 the final IBI 8-metric model was established for application to streams and rivers in four major Korean watersheds. In this paper, we describe how we developed fish sampling methods, determined metric attributes and categorized tolerance guilds and trophic guilds during the development of the multi-metric model. Two of the initial metrics were removed and the initial evaluation categories were reduced from six to four (excellent, good, fair, poor) before establishing the final national fish model. In the development phase, IBI values were compared with chemical parameters (BOD and COD as indicators of organic matter pollution) and physical habitat parameters to identify differences in IBI model values between chemical and physical habitat conditions. These processes undertaken during the development of the IBI model may be helpful in understanding the modifications made and contribute to creating efficient conservation and management strategies for stream environments to be used by limnologists and fish ecologists as well as stream/watershed managers.
This paper evaluates and compares the performance of the Deep Nerual Network (DNN)-based speech enhancement models according to various loss functions. We used a complex network that can consider the phase information of speech as a baseline model. As the loss function, we consider two types of basic loss functions; the Mean Squared Error (MSE) and the Scale-Invariant Source-to-Noise Ratio (SI-SNR), and two types of perceptual-based loss functions, including the Perceptual Metric for Speech Quality Evaluation (PMSQE) and the Log Mel Spectra (LMS). The performance comparison was performed through objective evaluation and listening tests with outputs obtained using various combinations of the loss functions. Test results show that when a perceptual-based loss function was combined with MSE or SI-SNR, the overall performance is improved, and the perceptual-based loss functions, even exhibiting lower objective scores showed better performance in the listening test.
In this paper, we propose a method to upsample a low-resolution depth map to a high-resolution version. While conventional camera sensors produce high-resolution color images, the sizes of the depth maps of range/depth sensors are usually low. In this paper, we consider the utilization of high-frequency components to the conventional depth map interpolation methods such as bilinear, bicubic, and bilateral. The proposed method is composed of the three steps: high-frequency component extraction, high-frequency component application, and interpolation. Two objective evaluation measures such as sharpness degree and blur metric are used to examine the performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms other conventional methods by a factor of 2 in terms of sharpness degree. As well, a blur metric is reduced by a factor of 14 %.
