  • This paper addresses the framework of object-oriented image coding, describing a new algorithm, based on monodimensional Legendre polynomials, for texture approximation. Through the use of 1D orthogonal basis functions, the computational complexity which usually makes prohibitive most of 2D region-oriented approaches is significantly reduced, while only a slight increment of distortion is introduced. In the aim of preserving the bidimensional intersample correlation of the texture information as much as possible, suitable pseudo-bidimensional basis functions have been used, yielding significant improvements with respect to the straightforward 1D approach. The algorithm has been experimented for coding still images as well as motion compensated sequences, showing interesting possibilities of application for very low bitrate video coding.

  • A multi d.o.f robotic manipulator is considered for multi-axis vibration control of a slender structure, using the concept of the flow source based vibration control. In order not to cause the motion saturation of the manipulator system, a hybrid dynamics associated with the flexible and desired manipulator error dynamics is also modeled as the control object. It is numerically shown that the flexible vibrations and the base motions of a test structure can be effectively controlled with the proposed hybrid dynamics.

  • In this study, PC-based slicing machine and driving software were constructed for the purpose of automation of semi-conductor cutting process. The biggest feature of software is variation of parameter and include data base, signal monitoring, error report, corresponding action or automatic motion planing. Parameters were drawn and algorithms were developed to make software by GUI interface. The cutting experiment was done for sampled wafer to see the effectiveness of the soft automation. From the experimented and implemented results, it is shown that parameters for automation of slicing process could be drawn, then its algorithms constructed. It could be considered what is the merit of this slicing machine by comparing the PC-based and the NC-based.

  • Stereo matching algorithm is usually used to obtain a disparity map from a pair of images. However, the disparity map obtained by using stereo matching contains lots of noise and error regions. In this paper, we propose a virtual-view synthesis algorithm using disparity refinement in order to improve the quality of the synthesized image. First, the error region is detected by examining the consistency of the disparity maps. Then, motion information is acquired by applying optical flow to texture component of the image in order to improve the performance. Then, the occlusion region is found using optical flow on the texture component of the image in order to improve the performance of the optical flow. The refined disparity map is finally used for the synthesis of the virtual view image. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the quality of the generated virtual-view.

  • In order to estimate people crowdedness in public area, the texture based method or motion based method can be used. In this paper we have proposed a mixed method. By designating the region of interest, we made the degree of crowdedness more accurate. The feature normalization also reduced the image distortion which results from difference of camera angle. The proposed system was optimized to real time embedded hardware system.

  • A controller built with the gyro effect for a balance-beam can freely control the attitude of an unstructured object by changing the position of an inner gimbal. In this paper, we propose a new balance-beam controller that can detect the inertia of the load to limit the velocity of the load commanded by a user. We found that when there was smaller load inertia, a larger restoration displacement occurred. Therefore, the load can be identified by issuing a predefined command to measure the restoration displacement, which enables us to construct a controller that can limit the angular velocity of the load by planning the motion. Experimental results show the performance of the controller with different loads.

  • Since impact phenomenon is highly nonlinear, the analysis and control of the contact motion has been a challenging subject. Various researches have been carried out mostly for the contact of a rigid robotic manipulator with a stiff and elastic environment. This paper is motivated by a new contact task: the in-circuit test of a printed circuit board. In this process, high speed contact occurs between a rigid probing manipulator and a plastically deformable work environment. A new dynamic model of the impact controlled probing task has been proposed, considering contact with the plastically deformable object. Approaching velocity conditions to avoid an excess of the allowable penetration depth and control the generated impact force properly are derived from the proposed model. The results of the simulation studies are made for various probing conditions and show the validity of the proposed model.

  • Optical flow is important not only for determining velocity and trajectory of the object but also for image segmentation and 3D information. The gradient-based method is mostly used to compute optical flow form image sequences, but it accomanies smoothing effect of velocity vectors. In this paper, an enhanced algorithm for computing optical flow using scalar edge to restrict is also applied to reduce errors both around motion boundary and in the occlusion region.
