  • This paper addresses the problem of extracting video objects from compressed video signals. Compressed videos include several informations about moving objects. An useful cue for object segmentation is motion vector per macroblock which sparse in MPEG. We propose a method for automatically estimating and extracting moving objects using motion vectors of macroblocks in this work.

  • The motion of animals and gymnasts in the air as well as free flying space robots without thrusters are subjected to nonholonomic constraints generated by the law of conservation of angular momentum. The purpose of this paper is to derive analytical posture control laws for free flying objects in the air. We propose the bang-bang control method for trajectory planning of a 3 link mechanical system with initial angular momentum. This technique is used to reduce the DOF (degrees of freedom) at first switching phase and to determine the control inputs to steer the reduced order system to the desired position. Computer simulations for motion planning of an athlete approximated by 3 link, namely platform diving, are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

  • When we deal with the image data through camera lens, much works are necessary for removing image distortions and obtaining accurate informations from the raw data. However, the calibration process is very complicated and requires many trials and errors. In this paper, 3 new approach to image processing is presented by developing a H/W vision system with a tracking camera. Using motor control with encoders the proposed tracking method tells us exact displacements of a moving object. Therefore this method does not require any calibration process for pin cusion. Owing to the mobility one camera covers wide ranges and, by lowering its height, the camera also obtains high resolution of the image. We first introduce the structure of the motion analysis system. Then the construced vision system is investigated by some experiments.

  • This paper attempt analysis and computer simulation of dynamics of a set of dual multi-joint fingers with soft-deformable tips which are grasping. Firstly, a set of differential equation describing dynamics of the fingers and object together with geometric constraint of tight area-contacts is formulated by Euler-Lagrange's formalism. Secondly, problems of controlling both the internal force and the rotation angle of the grasped object under the constraints of area-contacts of tight area-contacts are discussed. The effect of geometric constraints of area-contacts on motion of the overall system is analyzed and a method of computer simulation for overall system of differential-algebraic equations is presented. Finally, simulation results are shown and the effects of geometric constraints of area-contact is discussed.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy-motion-control based tracking algorithm of mobile robots, which uses the geometrical information derived from the active stereo-vision system mounted on the mobile robot. The active stereo-vision system consists of two color cameras that rotates in two angular dimensions. With the stereo-vision system, the center position and depth information of the target object can be calculated. The proposed fuzzy motion controller is used to calculate the tracking velocity and angular position of the mobile robot, which makes the mobile robot keep following the object with a constant distance and orientation.

  • In this paper we deal with a method of controlling PUMA 560 robot manipulator using a newly developed optical proximity sensor and the PDP-11/44 computer. The sensor output is different somewhat depending on an color of the object. The range of sensing vary from 38.4mm to 109.5mm for a real object, 39mm to 111.65mm for yellow, and 40.55mm to 107.25mm for blue. When an obstacle is encountered on the path of end-effector the system acknowledger immediatly the existence of the obstacle : and holds the motion of arm at a given distance. And also the system is capable of making the end effector avoid the obstacle automatically and keep on its motion.

  • The structure of a variable liquid column oscillator(a VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. The VLCO is a system absorbing high kinetic energy of accelerated motions of multiple floating bodies in the effect of air springs occurred by installation of inner air chambers. Thus, VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than wave energy converters of the activating object type made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiment was performed that a simple floating body was filled with internal fluid of same draft. The characteristics of motions were evaluated in each case of the opening or closing of the upper valves.

  • To investigate the preconceptions on the reference frame and relativity of motion, 251 of grade 7 pupils were selected. The questionnaire has 15 questions consisted of four test domains made by the researchers: object looks rest or moving in the rest frame, object looks rest or moving in the moving frame. The result shows that pupils took the observations in the moving frame for those in the rest frame, or vice versa. In addition, their answers varied according as the context of the observation differed.

  • Electrostatic forces have an advantage of directly levitating not only non-ferromagnetic metals but also semiconductors, such as silicon wafers, and dielectric materials like glass. This paper describes the characteristics of electrostatic forces and electrostatic suspension system, followed by the basic principle of 1-DOF(degree of freedom) electrostatic suspension system, and the structures of electrodes-for-suspension and voltage supplying methods to the electrodes in 1-DOF model. This paper also discuss about the minimum number of electrodes needed to control n-DOF motion of the suspended object and represents some desirable electrode patterns to stabilize the 6-DOF motion of the object. In the near future, electrostatic suspension system is expected to be applied to industrial manufacturing processes, for example, to the manufacture of semiconductor devices and/or flat panel display devices.
