The purpose of this study was to improve the motivation for prevention of adult chronic disease through identifying the relationship between health awareness and health behavior. These data was based on the survey of 524 men, This study employed 90 questions, related to general cheracteristics, health awareness, health behavior, dietary habit, mass media utilizing health information, The data were analyzed by using t-test, ANOVA, Contingency-Coefficient, Duncan's multiple range test. The result of this study revealed the follows: 1. The contingency coefficient between health awareness and health behavior showed that total(C=0.3272), 30-39 age group(C=3949), 40-49 age group(C=0.3978), which(C.) mean higher scores, had a [used to visit whenever they were ill], that 50-59 age group(C=0.4165) demonstrate higher score concerned with [Smoking]. 2, The general dietary habit related to statistically significant difference in men's age, educational status, income, economic status, job, concern of adult chronic disease(p<0.01). 3. The general dietary habit related to statistically significant difference in cancer patients arrounding them, knowledge of diabetes, hypertensiom and cancer (p<0.01). 4, Dietary habit for preventing obesity related to statistically significant difference in men's age, income(p<0.05). 5, Dietary habit for preventing obesity related to statistically significant difference in sensitivity of diabetes, hypertension and knowledge of diabetes, cancer(p<0.01). In conclusion, health education which were emphasis of health behavior formation is reguired.
To evaluate the effect of obesity on serum leptin and insulin levels in 80 elementary school children (aged 10.8 yr, 47 boys, 33 girls), we collected the anthropometric data and measured serum leptin and insulin levels. Serum leptin level and insulin resistance are known as factors which are associated with obesity and obesity related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension. The results were as follows. The serum levels of insulin (p<0.001), leptin (p<0.001) and HOM $A_{IR}$ (p<0.001) in obese group were significantly higher than those of other groups. The obesity indices correlated significantly to serum levels of insulin and leptin, but not to fasting glucose level. These results suggested that circulating leptin and insulin concentrations may act as a humoral signal indicator to adiposity-associated metabolic disorder in elementary school children.
The prevalence of obesity is continually increasing in South Korea; about 1/3 of adults are diagnosed with obesity and 1/2 of adults are overweight in 2016. Abnormal body fat mass increased the risk factors of metabolic syndrome (including hypertension, type II diabetes, dyslipidemia), chronic kidney failure, osteoarthritis, and cardiovascular disease. Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in Korea established the validation and approval system for "functional food" based on related laws and regulations. According to the guideline of MFDS, the biomarkers for obesity study in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trial are well summarized. The analysis of physical phenotypes is necessary condition to study further molecular phenotypes and pathway analysis in vivo study. Thus, we will review currently available physical phenotype analysis; dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and Oxylet gas analysis will be examined in-depth.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the level of physical activity and to identify factors related with physical activity for the elderly with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Methods: The subjects were 154 diabetic outpatient at 3 hospitals located in J city. Data were collected from February 1 to 17 in 2012. Data were analysed using Chi-square test, ANOVA, and logistic regression by SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Mean physical activity level per week measured by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was $2247.01{\pm}2533.73$ MET-minutes (minimally active). There were significant differences in the level of physical activity by age, spouse, education, job, admission, duration of DM, and DM therapy. There were significant differences in subjective health status, objective and subjective obesity, satisfaction with physical body, perception of aging, self-efficacy, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and social support among the inactive, minimally active, and health enhancing physical activity groups. Factors influencing the level of health enhancing physical activity were spouse (OR=10.192), self-efficacy (OR=5.351), subjective obesity (OR=.114), and perceived barriers (OR=.069). Conclusions: The level of physical activity of elderly patients with DM was minimally inactive. Physical activity program enhancing self-efficacy and decreasing perceived barriers, as well as improving the correct perception of subjective obesity is recommended as a nursing intervention.
Diabetes Mellitus (DM), often simply referred to as diabetes, has developed into a major health concern affecting more than 200 million people worldwide with approximately 4 million deaths per year attributed to the presence of the disease. Diabetes mellitus is categorized as Type 1 and Type 2, where Type 1 diabetes represents a lack of insulin production, and Type 2 diabetes is characterized by a relative lack of insulin receptor (i.e., decreased sensitivity to the effect of insulin) and cased by a complex interplay between genetic factors and environmental factors. Up to date, various studies on the pathology and mechanism in terms of genetic experiments have been conducted and approximately hundreds of genes were reported as diabetes mellitus associated genes. At this point, to support studies on the cause and mechanism of diabetes mellitus, an efficient database system to provide genetic variants related to diabetes mellitus is needed. DMBase is an integrated web-based genetic information resource for diabetes mellitus designed to service genomic variants, genes, and secondary information derived for diabetes mellitus genetics researchers. The current version of DMBase documents 754 genes with 3056 genetic variants and 66 pathways. It provides many effective search interfaces for retrieving diabetes mellitus and genetic information. A web interface for the DMBase is freely available at http://sysbio.kribb.re.kr/dmBase.
The purpose of this study is analyzed of exploratory research potential as anti-obesity agents of Euiiin-tang. Four Korean databases and 2 Korean Journals (Riss4U, KISS, OASIS, DBPIA, and Journal of Korean Rehabilitation Medicine, Journal of Korean Medicine of Obesity Research) were searched using search word 'individual herbs' and 'obesity', 'weight loss', 'fat', 'hypertension', 'hyperlipidemia', 'diabetes'. Clinical and Experimental Research published in the journal were analyzed, review research, studies of pharmacopunctures and studies of mixed herbal medicine were excluded. We collected 23 studies. Seven studies of Coicis Semen, 10 stdies of Ephedra Herba, 2 study of Angelica gigas Nakai, 3 studies Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba, 1 studies of Glycyrrhiza inflata Batal. Most studies were experiment researches which were composed of in vivo or in vitro, and clinical trial was 5 studies of Ephedra Herba. Main constituent herb, Coicis Semen, Ephedra Herba were thought to represent an anti-obesity effect. Through the result, we can assume to be likely effect of Euiiin-tang as obesity medicine.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a major cellular energy sensor and master regulator of metabolic homeostasis. On activation, this cellular fuel sensing enzyme induces a series of metabolic changes to balance energy consumption via multiple downstream signaling pathways controlling nutrient uptake and energy metabolism. This pivotal role of AMPK has led to the development of numerous AMPK activators which might be used as novel drug candidates in the treatment of AMPK related disorders, diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic diseases. Consequently, a number of patents have been published on AMPK activators from natural products and other sources. This review covers the patented AMPK activators from natural products and their therapeutic potential in treatment or prevention of metabolic diseases including diabetes and obesity.
Obesity is correlated with diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular, renal, neurologic, psychological and many other disease. Owing to the elevated income and behavioral changes, the prevalence of obesity has remarkably increased in Korea also. Considering the trend of the epidemic, we can easily expect the excessive spendings for the treatment of the obesity-related diseases in near future. In order to check the prevalence of obesity and serum lipid levels of Korean employees, we analyzed the medical check-up sample data of 10,332 adults who took physical check-ups at an institute in 2006. Through the logistic regression analysis we found the prevalence rate of total risk group showing ${\geq}23.0Kg/m^2$ was 57.4% and uric acid was found to be a definitive factor in the prevalence of obesity. Among the adults who eat more meat, drink more and smoke more smoking, the values of BMI, uric acid, cholesterol, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol and TG were significantly higher than rest of the examinees. And the average BMIs were significantly higher among those who have risk factors of liver disease, hypertension, cardiovascular and heart disease, and diabetes mellitus.

Obesity occurred by energy imbalance, is increasing regardless of race, sex, age, and related to the metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Since adipose tissue plays a critical role in regulating energy homeostasis, understanding of adipogenesis pathway and finding of regulatory mechanism for adipogenesis can be helpful to manage obesity as well as obesity-related diseases. In this study, to investigate the effects of Chestnut Inner Shell(CIS) extract on the adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were differentiated with adipogenic reagents for 9 days in the absence or presence of CIS extract ranging from 10 - 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$. The effect of CIS extract on 3T3-L1 differentiation was examined by measuring intracelluar lipid droplet and triglyceride contents. CIS extract remarkably inhibited lipid accumulation(about 45% inhibition at 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of CIS extract) and slightly decreased triglyceride contents(about 15% decrease at 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of CIS extract) in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes at the concentration showing no cytotoxicity. These results demonstrated that CIS extract significantly inhibit adipogenesis and can be used for the regulation of obesity.
Background: Metabolic disorders, including type II diabetes and obesity, present major health risks in industrialized countries. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) has become the focus of a great deal of attention as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of metabolic syndromes. In this study, we evaluated whether dietary aloe could reduce obesity-induced inflammation and adipogenesis. Methods: Male C57BL/6 obese mice fed a high-fat diet for 54 days received a supplement of aloe formula (PAG, ALS, Aloe QDM, and Aloe QDM complex) or pioglitazone (PGZ) and were compared with unsupplemented controls (high-fat diet; HFD) or mice fed a regular diet (RD). RT-PCR and western blot analysis were used to quantify the expression of obesity-induced inflammation. Results: Aloe QDM complex downregulated fat size through suppressed expression of scavenger receptors on adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) compared with HFD. Both white adipose tissue (WATs) and muscle exhibited increased AMPK activation through aloe supplementation, and in particular, the Aloe QDM complex. Obesity-induced inflammatory cytokines (IL-$1{\beta}$ and -6) and $HIF1{\alpha}$ mRNA and protein were decreased markedly, as was macrophage infiltration by the Aloe QDM complex. Further, the Aloe QDM complex decreased the translocation of NF-${\kappa}B$ p65 from the cytosol in the WAT. Conclusion: Dietary aloe formula reduced obesity-induced inflammatory responses by activation of AMPK in muscle and suppression of proinflammatory cytokines in the WAT. Additionally, the expression of scavenger receptors in the ATM and activation of AMPK in WAT led to reduction in the percent of body fat. Thus, we suggest that the effect of the Aloe QDM complex in the WAT and muscle are related to activation of AMPK and its use as a nutritional intervention against T2D and obesity-related inflammation.
