  • The purpose of this study is to categorize and analyze the body shape of obese Korean men that are needed for industrial design. Using the anthropometric data that were surveyed through the 5th Size Korea project, this study was conducted in four steps mostly through the multivariate statistical analysis. In the first step, Broca, BMI, WHR indices are used to define obesity and select obese men from Korean adults and teens. After 34 human anthropometric variables are supposed to be related to obesity were extracted through an expect survey. In the second step, a factor analysis was executed for those human anthropometric variables. Through this analysis, we obtained the human body factors that are related to the representation of obesity. Then the third step, we used a cluster analysis from the result of the factor analysis. And ANOVA analysis was also conducted to obtain the critical obese human anthropometric variables. In the final step, we found the characteristics of the body types of obese men according to clusters and ages. The body types of obese men classified in the study are expected to be applied to product design for clothing, furniture, automobile packaging, etc.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among eating habits, eating behaviors, obesity indices and serum leptin levels of 97 school children in the Daegu and Kyungpuk areas. The subjects consisted of 42 boys and 55 girls from the 4th and 5th grades. The prevalence rate of obesity was 63.6% in the males and 36.4% in the females. The nutritional status of the subjects was assessed using 24-hour dietary recalls and blood analyses. The mean serum leptin levels of the obese group (12.84 $\pm$ 6.97 ng/ml) were significantly higher than those of the non-obese group (2.43 $\pm$ 1.53 ng/ml) (p < 0.001) . The mean eating behavior scores and MAR were significantly different in the two groups. Nutrient intakes were low and fell short of the RDA. Serum leptin levels showed a significant negative correlation with eating habit (r= -0.24) and eating behavior scores (r= -0.40) (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). It was speculated that nutritional intervention and education about the appropriate nutrient intake requirements of developing children might be necessary.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the association between serum uric acid, abdominal obesity, and waist circumference (WC) in Korean. A total of 208 healthy examinees were examined at Gimcheon Medical Center from July 2011 to December 2011. WC and body mass index (BMI) of subjects were measured as well as blood pressure, fasting blood sugar level, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, C-reactive protein (CRP), triglycerides, and serum uric acid (SUA). In both men (p<0.05) and women (p<0.01), BMI and SUA were significantly correlated with WC. In men, triglycerides (r=0.501, p<0.01) had a positive correlation with WC, and CRP (r=0.442, p<0.01) had a positive correlation with BMI. In women, triglycerides (r=0.470, p<0.01) and CRP (r=0.366, p<0.01) had a positive correlation with WC. Therefore, WC and SUA may be the most effective anthropometric indices of obesity for screening Korean population.

  • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial disease with its exact causes not completely clear. Micronutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium have been associated with MetS components. Our objective was to investigate the association of nutrient adequacy (NA) with MetS components. The present cross-sectional study consisted of 850 adults between 18-59 years from Tehran, Iran. Dietary intake, socio-demographic data, medical history, and anthropometric indices were collected by trained personnel. NA was calculated as the mean intake ratio to the recommended amount of 16 micronutrients. MetS were defined by the consensus of National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The association between NA and MetS was examined using linear regression analyses after controlling potential confounders. More participants in the highest quartile were obese in terms of general obesity (p = 0004) and abdominal obesity (p = 0.003) compared with subjects in the least quartile. A significant positive correlation was found between waist circumference (WC) and NA even after controlling for all potential confounders (p < 0.001). NA was positively associated with WC among adults living in Tehran.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify relationships between safety and health indices in a shipbuilding industry. From the results of periodical health examination, job stress test, and health questionnaire for musculoskeletal disorders, the author stratified the 704 shipbuilding workers into categories of smoking, drinking frequency, the amount of exercise per week, obesity, blood pressure, diabetic symptoms, liver function, audibility, job stress, fatigued condition, musculoskeletal symptom, and accident. The results show that occupational injuries are highly related to smoking, drinking frequency, auditory capacity, fatigued condition, and musculoskeletal symptoms. These results can be used to develop more effective accidental occupational injury prevention programs for shipbuilding industries.

  • Obesity is the fifth leading risk for death globally, and a significant challenge to global health. It is a common, complex, non-malignant disease and develops due to interactions between the genes and the environment. DNA methylation can act as a downstream effector of environmental signals; analysis of this process therefore holds substantial promise for identifying mechanisms through which genetic and environmental factors jointly contribute to disease risk. To assess the effects of excessive weight and obesity on gene-specific methylation levels of promoter regions, we determined the methylation status of four genes involved in inflammation and oxidative stress [interleukin 6 (IL6), tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$ ($TNF{\alpha}$), mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), and glucose transport 4 (GLUT4)] in blood cell-derived DNA from healthy women volunteers with a range of body mass indices (BMIs) by methylation-specific PCR. Interestingly, the samples from obese individuals ($BMI{\geq}30kg/m^2$) showed significantly increased hypermethylation for IL6 gene compared to normal weight ($BMI<23kg/m^2$) and overweight sample ($23kg/m^2{\leq}BMI<30kg/m^2$) (P = 0.034 and P = 0.026). However there was no statistically significant difference in promoter methylation of the other 3 genes between each group. These findings suggest that aberrant DNA methylation of IL6 gene promoter may play an important role in the etiology and pathogenesis of obesity and IL6 methylation could be used as molecular biomarker for obesity risk assessment. Further studies are required to elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying this relationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of 12-week physical activity intervention on obesity and metabolic syndrome risk factors and smartphone game time in children. A total of 27 children(fifth grade elementary school students) participated in this study. The subjects were divided to exercise group(n=16) and control group(n=11), and participants in exercise group performed running and jump rope(60min/day; 3days/week; 50~70% of THR) during 12-week. We analyzed measurement data using two-way ANOVA. As results, obesity indices except body weight and metabolic syndrome risk factor decreased significantly in exercise group compare with control group. And VO2max increased and smartphone game time decreased significantly in exercise group compare with control group. In conclusion, we suggest that 12-week exercise intervention in children has positive effects on obesity and metabolic syndrome and improve negative lifestyle such as smartphone game.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of a nutritional education program conducted by public health center in Jinju city for obese women. The subjects of this study consisted of 27 obese women(BMI $\geq$ 25) aged 35∼55 years in Jinju area, and the educational period was 6 weeks. We evaluated the anthropometric parameters and biochemical indices, dietary habits, dietary behaviors, nutritional attitude of obese women before and after the nutritional education. And also daily intake during the educational period were measured. Weight, obesity index, BMT, waist circumferences and hip circumferences of obese women were significantly decreased(p<0.001) after nutritional education, but changes of WHR, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were not significant. There were no significant difference in total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, LDH and blood glucose level in serum before and after the nutritional education, but the indices tend to decrease after the nutritional education. There was significantly different change of dietary behaviors in 3 items among the dietary behavior after the nutritional education. Their dietary habit, dietary behavior and nutritional attitude scores were significantly improved after the nutritional education. Mean daily energy intakes was low compared with the RDA as 78.88%. The average carbohydrates, protein, fat ratio on the energy intakes was 63 : 17 : 20. The proportion of energy intake from snacks the was 12.91${\pm}$6.15%.
