This study was conducted to evaluate changes in nutritional knowledge, attitudes, behavior intention and behavior in a sample of 27 insulin dependent diabetic students participating in diabetics' camp. Nutritional knowledge related to diabetes, attitudes toward diabetes treatment and behavior intention about dietary changes were tested before and after nutrition education. Six months after nutrition education, an open ended questionnaire about their actual behavior changes was mailed to all participants and 17 of them responded. Pre-and post-testing showed that nutrition education was effective in significant changes in knowledge and in promoting positive attitudes and behavior intention. Increases of knowledge were consistently the same regardless of sex, level of education, regularity of diet, and duration of disease. Compared to male students, female students showed more positive change in knowledge, attitudes and behavior intention. It also appeared that middle school students showed more positive improvement in knowledge, attitudes and behavior than elementary and high school students. A follow-up test showed that their actual behavior changes were not squared with their behavior intention. They pointed out difficulties in having proper amount of meals and snack and the conflict with school time schedule as the major reason for discordance. These findings suggest that nutrition education for diabetics can be effective to improve their knowledge, attitudes and behavior intention and understanding about barriers to behavior change is important for better compliance to the disease.
[Purpose] The goal of this study was to review data on physical activity level (PAL), a crucial index for determining estimated energy requirement (EER), calculated as total energy expenditure (TEE, assessed with doubly labeled water [DLW]) divided by resting metabolic rate (RMR, PAL = TEE/RMR) in female athletes and to understand the methods of assessing athletes' EERs in the field. [Methods] For the PAL data review among female athletes, we conducted a PubMed search of the available literature related to the DLW method. DLW studies measuring TEE and RMR were included for the present review. [Results] Briefly, the mean PAL was 1.71 for collegiate swimmers with moderate training, which was relatively low, but the mean PAL was 3.0 for elite swimmers during summer training camp. This shows that PAL can largely vary even within the same sport depending on the amount of training, and the differences in PAL were remarkable depending on the sport. Aside from the DLW method, there is currently no research tool related to athletes' EERs that can be used in the field. The purpose of this study was getting information to set up the new roles focused on nutrition education for school dietitians as nutrition teachers. One hundred thirty nine school dietitians and 1169 elementary school children residing in Daegu city and Gyeongbuk province were surveyed for this study. Sixty eight percent of the school dietitians perceived 1st-3rd year of the elementary school is the most proper time to start nutrition education, and 59.0% of them wanted to practice nutrition education as a discretion teaching time. The largest proportion(79.1%) of the school dietitians expected that nutrition education is helpful to get good dietary habit. School dietitians responded that major contents that should be included in the nutrition education was balanced diet, diet and habit, managing healthy weight, dining etiquette, food safety and problems of environmental contamination. Fairly large proportion of the students(64.4%) responded nutrition education is urgently needed. The contents of the nutrition education students wanted most were cooking and healthy diet. Forty six percent of the students perceived school dietitians are responsible for nutrition education and they wanted to have nutrition education as a part of special activity class. The most preferred frequency of nutrition education was 1 hour/week and 46.2% of the students responded they wanted to participate cooking camp.
Regulation of invertase biosynthesis was studied in thermophilic and alkalophilic Bacillus sp. TA-11. Biosynthesis of the invertase was effectively induced in the presence of 10 mM sucrose for 180 min. Glucose repressed the invertase induction by sucrose and as late as addition time of glucose, the invertase formation was increased, indicating that glucose repression was occurred by inducer exclusion. Catabolite repression was reduced a little by the addition of cAMP for 180 min of induction.
As a part of investigation for listeriosis, we attmepted iolationof Listeria spp. from commerical frozen and refrigerated foods at the supermarket level. Seven strains of Listeria spp. were isolate from 6 samples (7.15) among 84 samples of frozen foods, and ten strains of Listeria spp. were also isolated from 8 samples (7.6%)_ among 105 samples of refrigerated foods at the supermarkets in Pusan area. From a total of 189 commerical foods, the number of isolated Listeria spp. and ratio were 6 strains(3.25) of L. grayi, one strain (0.5%) of L. welshimeri, 6 strains (3.2%) of L. innocua and 4 strains (2.15) of L monocytogenes. Listeria spp. isolates except L. monocytogenes did not show $\beta$-hemolysis on blood agar and positive reaction in CAMP test with Staphyloccccus aureus. In the antibiotic susceptibility,most isolates of Listeria spp. were susceptible to 12 antibiotics such as ampicillin , cephalotin, penicillin, amikacin, gentamicin, erythromycin, kanamycin, vancomycin, tobramycin, carbenicillin , tetracycline and trimethoprim /sulfamethoxiazole. Four strains of L. monocytogenes were susceptible to ntibiotics used in this study except nitrofurantio. The serotype of 3 strains and one strain of L. monocytogenes were classified into Listeria O serotype 1 and 4, respectively.
The purpose of this study was to obtain basic data of nutrition education for obese children and to examine food habits, food behaviors, and nutrition knowledge. A convenience sample of 84(male:62, female:22) obese children was selected from "98 Children Nutrition Camp". The survey design employed a structured questionnaire. The results of this study were summarized as follows. 1. The percentage of the subjects who overestimated their body weight was higher in female compared to male. Only 35.9% of highly-obese subjects considered them as 'very fat'. The experience of weight control was higher in female than in male, and it was also higher moderately- or highly-obese subjects compared to mildly obese. 2. 64.3% of subjects reported that they regularly eat breakfast. The percentage of the subjects who indicated that they eat at regular meal time or they eat very irregularly was highest in the highly-obese subjects. 3. 34.5% of subjects reported that they eat very fast. The eating speed was slower in female compared to male, and in obese subjects. 55.4% of subjects reported that didn't eating out. 4. 80.9% of subjects had snacks, and most of them had snack between lunch and dinner. The reason the subjects eat snack was hunger. The most favorite snack was cookies. 5. The most preferred and distasteful food was meats(32.1%) and vegetables(67.1%), respectively. 6. The score of food behaviors was relatively low in most subjects. 7. The level of nutrition knowledge was in order of fair(83.1%), poor(9.6%), excellent(7.3%), and was higher in male compared to female. Consequently the results of this study showed to disagreement among food habits, food behaviors and nutrition knowledge, and feel keenly the necessity of education connecting of these. This education had to be practical education to change food behaviors.
The purpose of this study was to obtain basic data for nutrition education of the children in a health promoting elementry school. The data was collected by a questionaire of food habits, and anthropometric measurement and biochemical test in comparison with obesity index. The study subjects were boys and girls aged 10 to 12 years who participated in the “99 Children Nutrition Camp”. The average obesity index was 1.7$\pm$21.6% in boys and -11.4$\pm$12.6% in girls. After school, major leisure items were significnatly different by gender but both boys and girls played mainly computer game. In concern for body image and eating habits, girls had more concern and girls had attempted weight control more than boys. 80.2% of subjects had prejudice for special food, especially, all subjects in the severely underweight group had prejudice. But this tendency was significantly decreased with the increasing obesity index. The lowest preferency was for vegetables(64.4%). The tendency of prejudice of subjects was higher whose mother are thirties than those of subjects whose mother are in fourties. The serum GOT and GPT values were significantly higher in overweight and obese group than the other groups. The only serum T-chol was significantly higher in boys than in girls. The number of risk factors related to coronary heart disease(CHD) based on coresponding criteria of TG, T-chol, HDL-chol, and LDL-chol was not increased significantly with the degree of obesity index. The results indicated the need of nutritional management for the children. At a point of view, to educate children early who are able to change food habits and life-styles means to help heathy growth and to deliver up heathy adults. Active nutrition education for both children and mothers will be recommended with joint participation of nutritionists in community public health center and elementary school.

This study was conducted to find biochemical status, dietary habits and dietary behaviors according to the degree of obesity among obese children, and to provide baseline data for nutrition education. The number of subjects was 64 obese children(Mildly obesed : MI 19, Moderately obese : Mo 30, Severely obese : SI 15) participated in '98 Summer Nutrition Camp'. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Weight and body fat rate was increased according to obesity degree(p<0.05). Total cholesterol and TG also was increased according to obesity degree but it was statistically significant. 2. In dietary habits, it wasn't statistically significant but MI tended to eat fast and to eat the snacks before sleeping. MO tended to skip the breakfast. SI tended to eat more snacks and dinner and they tended to overeat. 3. In cognition of self-weight, most obese children(93.7%) worried about their weight but 73.4% of obese children thought that it was possible for losing weight. There were no difference by the obesity degree. 4. In dietary behaviors, there were no statistically significant difference but MI and SI than MO tended to had worse dietary behaviors. 5. In life styles, SI than the others have tendency to have more regular exercise but they had more indoor activities than outdoor activities. 6. In foods intake frequency, SI than MI and MO ate instant foods more frequently and MI than the others ate hot and salty foods more frequently(p<0.05). With these result, MI and SI than MO tended to have undesirable dietary habits and behaviors. Many obese children worried about the weight but they had positive thought about losing weight. SI tended to do regularly exercise but they had more indoor activities than outdoor activities. Therefore, only with this study, it is difficult to say that there is the clear difference by the obesity degree. Because, in this study, we can have some difference among these groups, we should study more about these difference for effective, systemic and practical nutrition education in the future.
I investigated the effect of KT5720, an inhibitor of protein kinase A, on the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection in BHK-21cell cultures. The virus inducted cytopathic effect (CPE) was almost completely suppressed by KT5720 at 5uM. The inhibitor, however, did not affect replication of the virus nor the synthesis of viral macromolecules. KT5720, did not block the cytoskeletal disruption, while the cell rounding was suppressed. And, the KT5720-sensitive function may be involved in developing the VSV-induced CPE, but not essential for the virus replications.
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic information on nutritional condition for improving performance of the national junior rowing team players(male n=17, female n=14). To attain this purpose, their body composition and energy intake situations were investigated during their three-week winter training camp. Measurement of body composition measured by the interval, and two days, and dietary intake in this study to investigate the type and amount of food, the researchers measured directly, and then refer to the record subjects to investigate the dietary intake and the adoption of a Weighing Method. The result is as follows. During training, body composition due to the high intensity training to maintain a properly balanced diet is the consumption of energy, weight and body composition has a positive influence. The male players' average energy intake is 5,951.6 kcal(72.6 kcal/kgBW, 150%), the rate of the three main nutrients, carbohydrate, fat, protein, is 72.6 : 8.7 : 18.7 respectively. For the female, the average energy intake is 3,685.6 kcal(51.8 kcal/kgBW, 121%), and the rate of the three main nutrients is 76.3 : 8.5 : 15.2. Both of male and female were taken sufficient Vitamin, mineral and other nutrient according to %RI(recommended intake). Based on the results of a survey of elite athletes and nutrition management and the systematic introduction and review of the program in conjunction with a professional nutritionist would need, and can also be applied to expand the school to the scene, the reality of the program review and development of qualified need.
