Purpose: To present necessary data for improvement in communications between health professionals in as characterized by nurses' communications. Methods: This study was a descriptive survey research design with a survey of 1,510 registered nurses working in general hospitals (of at least 1,900 beds) in Seoul. A questionnaire on communication in the ICU, nurse-physician and nurse-nurse, was used. Data were collected from January 9 to 20, 2012, and the response rate was 85.0%. Results: Cronbach ${\alpha}$ values ranged from .75 to .89, except for .59 for accuracy (nurse-physician), with .89 overall. The highest mean score was for perception for timeliness [$3.83{\pm}.57$], followed by shift communication (nurse-nurse) [$3.64{\pm}.66$], openness (nurse-nurse) [$3.64{\pm}.65$], accuracy (nurse-nurse) [$3.14{\pm}.61$], openness (nurse-physician) [$2.90{\pm}.75$], understanding (nurse-physician) [$2.82{\pm}.65$], and accuracy (nurse-physician) [$2.70{\pm}.59$]. Subscales of openness, understanding, and shift communication were strongly associated with communication satisfaction. The general characteristics of nurses with different perceptions of communications included age, clinical experience, work pattern, and department. Conclusion: Proactive activities to improve accuracy, openness and mutual understanding between physicians and nurses are required for patient safety. Further studies are also needed to reassess communications and evaluate the relationship between patient outcomes and nurses' job satisfaction after application of strategies to improve communications.
Purpose: This study was a descriptive research to identify the effects of communication skills, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue on burnout among staff of long term care insurance for the elderly in National Health Insurance Services in Korea. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. The participants were 191 staffs of long-term care insurance in National Health Insurance Services. Data were collected via mail from the 24 branch offices which were randomly selected among the total of 226 centers of National Health Insurance Corporation. Stamm's professional quality of life (ProQOL) and Communication Skills Test tool were included in questionnaire to detect. SPSS/WIN 20.0 was used to conduct the descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression. Results: Compassion fatigue had a significant positive effect on burnout, while Compassion satisfaction had a negative effect on burnout. The explained variance for burnout was 69% and compassion fatigue was the most significant factor in burnout among staff of long term care insurance services. Conclusion: The results indicate that the factors influencing staffs' burnout are compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and education level. Therefore, strategies to decrease compassion fatigue and improve compassion satisfaction are needed to decrease burnout for staffs of long-term care insurance in National Health Insurance Services.
Purpose: This study was to analyze the relationship between head nurse's leadership, staff nurse's health promotion life style and job satisfaction and nursing work performance. Method: The duration for investigation took place from September 11 to 29, 2006 and 501 staff nurses. Results: Nursing work performance of 3 groups of nurses that group of nurses who evaluated leadership of head nurse is high in authority aspect but is low in harmony aspect(p<.05), group of nurses who evaluated leadership of head nurse is low in authority aspect but is high in harmony aspect(p<.01), and group of nurses who evaluated leadership of head nurse is high both in authority aspect and in harmony aspect(p<.001), was all statistically much higher than group of nurses who evaluated leadership of head nurse is low both in authority aspect and in harmony aspect. Conclusion: nursing work performance of staff nurses are compositively affected by social psychological factor such as job factor, health promotion conduct, and job satisfaction and leadership factor of head nurse.
A cross-sectional study was conducted among nursing staff of a missionary hospital of Delhi in June 2009. All the nurses were invited to participate in the training programme on breast cancer and techniques of breast self examination (BSE). A questionnaire was administered to all 259 participants seeking information on their level of awareness regarding breast cancer and relevant screening guidelines. With the help of 5 training workshops all the nurses were imparted training regarding the most appropriate technique of doing breast self exams. The mean age of the participants was 35.8 years. Out of a total of 259 nursing staff members 77.2% correctly answered all the 10 questions regarding high risk factors for breast cancer and after the training programme this increased to 100% (p<0.05). Only 65.2% of the participants gave correct responses to all the 8 questions regarding correct technique of performing a BSE, which after the training programme increased to 99.3% (p<0.05). At the baseline only 56.8% knew all the three screening methods correctly and after the intervention 98.7% could correctly mark the responses regarding screening (p<0.05). The actual practice of following the screening guidelines amongst the nursing staff was poor. Only 26 (10.03%) had ever done a BSE, none performed it monthly, 58 (22.4%) had ever gone themselves for a CBE and 18 (6. 94%) had ever undergone mammography.
Purpose: The construction worker has diverse harmful factors such as noise, dust, and dealing with chemicals. Therefore this research aimed to examine the necessity of appointing a health manager in the construction industry by examining the cost-benefit analysis when the construction industry appoints a health manager. Methods: In order to calculate the healthcare staff employment cost and the benefits from their activities in 1,425 construction companies with the staff of 300 or more people during 2011, this study analyzed existing data and existing research data, as well as national data. Results: Total annual costs were 99,920,070,900 won and total annual benefits were 324,807,182,625 won. Benefits were found to be 224,887,111,725 won exceeding costs. Benefit/cost ratio resulting from appointing a health manager in the construction industry workplaces was 3.25 times. Conclusion: The findings of this research can be used as the base data to make rational decision to positively encourage the employment of healthcare staff in construction companies pursuant to relevant laws.
Purpose: This study was to provide baseline data to arrange systematic management for the infectious waste. Methods: This data was collected by self-reported questionnaires from a total of 419 subjects, ie nurses, nurse's aides and laboratory technicians working at a university hospital located in G city. The collected data were analyzed by t-test or ANOVA, Tukey test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: The knowledge of the infectious waste was statistically significant in type of staff and level of education. Attitude was statistically significant in type of staff, age group, level of education, working period, and marital status. And also the practice of the subject was statistically significant in type of staff, age group, education level, the working periods, and marital status. There was positive association between attitude and practice(r=.63, ${\rho}$< 001). By means of multiple stepwise regression analysis, total variance explained by the attitude towards infectious wastes, single employee, and the working periods less than ten years was 44% of the practice of infectious wastes. Conclusion: An educational program focusing on strategy to change employee's attitude can be effective for building a well-organized management system.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on the infection prevention management program, which is one of the infectious disease control program by identifying the prevalence and risk factors of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in healthcare workers. Methods: We surveyed a total of 3,046 LTBI test results, including those of 2,269 existing staff and 777 new employees. An interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) for the diagnosis of LTBI was performed using QuantiFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-IT). The risk factors of LTBI were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Results: The overall prevalence of LTBI was 16.0% (487/3,046). The prevalence of LTBI in the existing staff was 17.9% (406/2,269) and the prevalence of LTBI in new employees was 10.4% (81/777). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk factors of latent tuberculosis infection among the existing staff were gender, age and work period wheres, the risk factor amongst the new employees depended on their age. Conclusion: The LTBI was not related to the type of occupation and work unit. Therefore, while establishing an infection control program for the prevention of tuberculosis infection at medical institurions, institutional heads and infection control experts should encompass a policy for all the employees.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the nursing needs and workload of nurses according to nursing dependency for effective placement of nursing staff in the emergency department (ED). Methods: In June 2020, 256 adult patients who visited the ED were classified as two groups, suspected COVID-19 patients and general patients. The participants'electronic medical records were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, 𝑥2-test, and Fisher's exact test using the SPSS. Results: The patient dependence score showed a significant difference between the two groups, with an average of 13.99±1.85 for the suspected COVID-19 patient group and 10.58±2.10 for the general patient group (t=12.42, p<.001). There were statistically significant differences in communication (t=3.28, p=.001), mobility (t=3.29, p=.001), nutrition, elimination, and personal care (t=7.34, p<.001) among the six domains of nursing dependency. In the domains of environment, safety, health, and social needs, the dependency score was 3 for all suspected COVID-19 patients and 1 for all general patients. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that infection control activities of emergency patients who need isolation affect the patients' nursing dependency on nursing care.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship between transformational leadership by head nurses and positive psychological capital, psychological well-being, stress and somatization of staff nurses. Method: Participants in this study were 300 staff nurses in general hospitals located in G and B cities. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS Win 18.0 program. Result: The major findings were as follows; 1) There were positive influences of transformational leadership on positive psychological capital, psychological well-being, and a negative effect on stress. 2) Positive psychological capital had a positive influence on psychological well-being, and negative effects on stress and somatization. 3) In the analysis of the mediating role of the positive psychological capital, transformational leadership was shown to indirectly affect psychological well-being and stress through positive psychological capital. Conclusions: These findings suggest that transformational leadership has important influences on employees' psychological well-being and stress via employees' positive psychological capital. To enhance psychological well-being and reduce stress for nurses, it is important to develop not only the leadership of head nurses but also the positive psychological capital of staff nurses.
This study attempts to investigate the relations between the types of communication, the job satisfaction. and the nursing performance of the staff nurses. The subjects of this study were the 114 nurses working in general wards, intensive care units, and the emergency rooms of the general hospital in Kyongbuk province. They were asked to answer the questionnaires as regards the types of communication and job satisfaction, and their performance of nursing, and these were evaluated by the head nurses, and their direct seniors. The data were collected for 10 days from the September 17 to 26, 2002. According to the purpose of the study, descriptive analysis, ANOVA. Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression were applied for the data analysis using SPSS 10.0. The results are as follows : 1. The types of communication of staff nurses showed that the upward communication was $3.12\pm0.56$. the downward communication was $3.56\pm0.42$. the horizontal communication was $2.98\pm0.44$. and the informal communication was $2.59\pm0.49$. It showed that the most frequent communication was the downward communication. 2. In terms of the job satisfaction, there was significant difference according to the length of the period working for one ward (F=5.95, p=0.003), 3. The performance of nursing was significantly different according to the age (F=23.52, p=0.000), the working duration as a nurses (F=21.9, p=0.000), the types of nursing unit (F=5.33, p=0.002), and the working duration in present nursing unit (F=15.87, p=0.000). 4. In terms of communication type, the job satisfaction was associated with quality of the upward communication (F=6.23, p=0.003), the downward communication (F=5.78, p=0.004), and the horizontal communication (F=11.73, p=0.000) There were no association between the types of communication and the performance of nursing. 5. There was a positive correlation between the communication and the job satisfaction. And the downward communication (r=0.398) showed the greatest correlation with the job satisfaction. There was no statistically significant correlation between the communication and the performance of nursing. And the upward communication (r=-0.058) showed a negative, though not significant correlation with performance of nursing. 5.
