In this paper, heat and mass transfer characteristics through experimental and numerical study are extensively investigated in steam reforming reactor under given operating conditions. In order to get simulated data at outlet of the reformer, heterogeneous reactor model is incorporated. As the reaction also takes place in porous media, two medium approach is used to take into account thermally non-equilibrium phenomena between catalyst and bulk gas. From various parametric studies, significance of heat transfer is emphasized in steam reforming reaction.
Currently structural design of basement exterior wall is based on the assumption of boundary condition of plate, which may lead to erroneous results. In this study, the behavior of basement exterior wall subject to earth pressure and hydraulic pressure is investigated using linear finite element analysis. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the variation of moment and shear force according to column-to-wall stiffness and aspect ratios. Using these numerical results, modification factors applicable to the design of basement exterior wall are presented. Design example is illustrated, showing satisfactory results.
This study presents in-line digital particle holography and its application to spray droplets to measure the characteristics of spray droplets. Several important parameters at the time of hologram recording such as the object distance and the region of laser beam used were verified. The correlation coefficient method with important parameters such as the reconstruction interval and the correlation interval was used for determination of the focal planes of particles. The optimal values of all these parameters are obtained by either numerical simulation of holograms or experiments. Using these optimal parameters, double pulse digital spray holograms in a short time interval were recorded with the synchronization system for the time control. The spatial positions of droplets that are used for the evaluation of the three dimensional droplet velocities can be easily located, which proves the feasibility of the digital holographic technology for measurements of several important features of spray droplets.
This paper proposes a simple inelastic analysis approach to efficiently map out the complete nonlinear post-collapse (strain-softening) response and the maximum load capacity of axially loaded concrete encased steel composite columns (stub and slender). The scheme simultaneously incorporates the influences of difficult instabilizing phenomena such as concrete confinement, initial geometric imperfection, geometric nonlinearity, buckling of reinforcement bars and local buckling of structural steel, on the overall behavior of the composite columns. The proposed numerical method adopts fiber element discretization and an iterative M${\ddot{u}}$ller's algorithm with an additional adaptive technique that robustly yields solution convergence. The accuracy of the proposed analysis scheme is validated through comparisons with various available experimental benchmarks. Finally, a parametric study of various key parameters on the overall behaviors of the composite columns is conducted.
A numerical investigation of the performance of the plate heat exchanger with rectangular winglet is conducted to examine the combined effect of vortex generator and louver fins. Velocity and temperature fields and spanwise averaged Nu and friction factor are presented. Enhancement of heat transfer and flow loss penalty is evident. A Parametric study of three factors (Re, angle of attack and louver angle) with levels of 5 (Re= 300, 500, 700, 900, 1100), 4($\alpha=15^{\circ}, 30^{\circ}, 45^{\circ}, 90^{\circ},$), and 4($\beta=0^{\circ}, 15^{\circ}, 30^{\circ}, 45^{\circ}$), respectively, indicates the performance defined by the ratio of heat transfer enhancement to flow loss penalty shows monotonic behavior for each parameter alone but the interactions between parameters is found to be considerable effect on the performance of heat exchanger and should be considered in design. The effect of stamping is also examined.

A new method based on the alternating conditional expectation (ACE) algorithm is developed to calculate axial shape index (ASI) for the 3-level excore detector. The ACE algorithm, a type of non-parametric regression algorithms, yields an optimal relationship between a dependent variable and multiple independent variables. In this study, the simple correlation between ASI and excore detector signals is developed using the Younggwang nuclear power plant unit 3 (YGN-3) data without any preprocessing on the relationships between independent variables and dependent variable. The numerical results show that simple correlations exist between the three excore signals and ASI of the core. The accuracy of the new method is much better than those of the current CPC and COLSS algorithms.
In this study, nonlinear analyses of prestressed concrete(PSC) test beams for inservice inspection of prestressed concrete containments for CANDU nuclear power plants are presented. In the analysis the material nonlinearities of concrete, rebar and prestressing steel are used. To reduce the numerical instability with respect to the used finite element mesh size, the tension stiffening effect has been considered. For concrete, the tensile stress-strain relationship derived from tests is modified and the stress-strain curve of rebar is assumed as a simple bilinear model. The stress-strain curve of prestressing steel is applied as a multilineal curve with the first straight line up to 0.8fpu. To prove the validity of the applied material models, the behavior and strength of the PSC test specimens tested to failure have been evaluated. A reasonable agreement between the experimental results and the predictions is obtained. Parametric studies on the tension stiffening effects, the impact of prestressing losses with time, and the compressive strength of concrete have been conducted.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters, such as temperature, mean current density and voltage on the performance of phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) by numerical analysis. Two types of flow passages, which are Z-parallel type and Z-counter type, are evaluated to obtain the best current density and temperature distribution. Parametric studies and sensitivity analysis of the PAFC system's operation in single cell are accomplished. A steady state simulation of the entire system is developed using nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The finite difference method and trial and error procedures are used to obtain a solution.
A theoretical model based on Rayleigh-Ritz method is proposed to predict the resonance frequency of a W/T(Wind Turbine) tower structure supported by guy cables. In order to verify the validity of the theoretical model, a reduced W/T tower system is manufactured and tested. Frequency response and mode data are determined by modal testing and finite element analysis is performed to calculate the natural frequency of the tower model. Numerical and experimental results are compared with those by the theoretical analysis. Parametric study by the theoretical model shows how the cable tension and cable elasticity influence the resonance frequency of the W/T tower structure. Finally, vibration response under various rotating speed is investigated to examine the possibility of severe resonance.
Numerical and experimental works have been made in order to figure out the physical mechanism of thermal storage system for the determination of optimal design and to enhance the thermal efficiency of the system. To this end a computer program is developed and evaluated successfully against experimental data measured with a bench scale facility. Considering the thermal efficiency of storage is critically impaired by the mixing effect, the minimum flow mixing situation is calculated by the assumption of uniform plug-type flow as a reference condition. Further a parametric systematic calculations have been made for a hypothetical full-scale storage system with Fr, storage dimension, diffuser type and loading hour, etc.
