  • This paper presents numerical study on dynamic characteristics of evaporator to control evaporator superheat and compressor capacity with optimum condition in refrigeration system. It is very important to reduce energy consumption and to keep room temperature within a very restricted range with minimum oscillation in some special applications of the refrigeration system. Heat exchange is mainly happened in the evaporator. So, making mathematical model of evaporator and analyzing evaporator characteristics are necessary in order to control the superheat and the capacity of the system. A mathematical model based on the one dimensional partial differential equations representing mass and energy conservation and a tube-wall energy is described. A set of ordinary differential equation is formulated by integrating separately over the two regions(two-phase and vapor) generally presented in a heat exchanger.

  • Damping may change the response characteristics of nonlinear oscillations due to the parametric excitation of a thin cantilever beam. When the natural frequencies of the first bending and torsional modes are of the same order of magnitude, we can observe the one-to-one combination resonance in the perturbation analysis depending on the characteristic parameters. The nonlinear behavior about the combination resonance reveals a chaotic motion depending on the natural frequencies and damping ratio. We can analyze the chaotic dynamics by using the eigenvalue analysis of the perturbed components. In this paper, we derived the equations for autonomous system and solved them to obtain the characteristic equation. The stability analysis was carried out by examining the eigenvalues. Numerical integration gave the physical behavior of each mode for given parameters.

  • A numerical method for the assessment and correction of tunnel wall interference effects on forced-oscillation testing is presented. The method is based on the wall pressure signature method using computed wall pressure distributions. The wall pressure field is computed using unsteady three-dimensional full Navier-Stokes solver for a 70-degree pitching delta wing in a wind tunnel. Approximately-factorized alternate direction implicit (AF-ADI) scheme is advanced in time by solving block tri-diagonal matrices. The algebraic Baldwin-Lomax turbulence, model is included to simulate the turbulent flow effect. Also, dual time sub-iteration with, local, time stepping is implemented to improve the convergence. The computed wall pressure field is then imposed as boundary conditions for Euler re-simulation to obtain the interference flow field. The static computation shows good agreement with experiments. The dynamic computation demonstrates reasonable physical phenomena with a good convergence history. The effects of the tunnel wall in upwash and blockage are analyzed using the computed interference flow field for several reduced frequencies and amplitudes. The corrected results by pressure signature method agree well with the results of free air conditions.

  • A 2-dimensional numerical analysis is presented for thermal-electron heat conduction effects upon the electron transport and the drain current-voltage characteristics of submicron GaAs MESFETs, based on the use of a nonstationary hydrodynamic transport model. It is shown that for submicron GaAs MESFETs, electron heat conduction effects are significant on their internal electronic properties and also drain current-voltage characteristics. Due to electron heat conduction effects, the electron energy is greatly one-djmensionalized over the entire device region. Also, the drain current decreases continuously with increasing thermal conductivity in the saturation region of large drain voltages above 1 V. However, the opposite trend is observed in the linear region of small drain voltages below 1 V. Accordingly, for a large thermal conductivity, negative differential resistance drain current characteristics are observed with a pronounced peak of current at the drain voltage of 1 V. On the contrary, for zero thermal conductivity, a Gunn oscillation characteristic is observed at drain voltages above 2 V under a zero gate bias condition.

  • A series of computational simulations have been carried out for supersonic flows in a scram jet engine with and without a cavity. Transverse injection of hydrogen, a simplest form of fuel supply, is considered in the present study with the injection pressure varying from 0.5 to 1.5 MPa. The corresponding equivalence ratios are 0.167 - 0.50. The work features detailed resolution of the flow dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the Previous studies. In particular, oscillatory flow characteristics are captured at a scale sufficient to identify the underlying physical mechanisms. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only to the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flowfield. The interactions between shock waves and shear layer may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The role of the cavity and injection pressure are examined systematically.

  • Two-dimensional direct numerical simulation of the edge-tones by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM) is presented. We use a new lattice BGK compressible fluid model that has an additional term and allow larger time increment comparing the conventional FDLBM, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations result from periodically oscillation of jet around the edge. That pressure fluctuations propagate with the sound speed. It is clarified that the sound wave generated in rather wide region and individual vortices do not affect the sound wave propagation.

  • This paper presents and efficient improvement of the iterative eigenvalue calculation method and the selection of initial values in AESOPS algorithm. To determine the initial eigenvalues of the system, system state matrix is constructed with the two-axis generator model. From the submatrices including synchronous and damping coefficients, the initial eigenvalues are calculated by the QR method. Participation factors are also calculated from the above submatrices in order to determine the generators which have a important effect to the specific oscillation mode. Also, the heuristically approximated eigenvalue calculation method in the AESOPS algorithm is transformed to the Newton Raphson Method which is largely used in the nonlinear numerical analysis. The new methods are developed from the AESOPS algorithm and thus only a few calculation steps are added to practice the proposed algorithm.

  • In this study we have considered the governing nonlinear equation of an eccentrically reinforced cylindrical shell. A new analytical method called He's Variational Approach (VA) is used to obtain the natural frequency of the nonlinear equation. This analytical representation gives excellent approximations to the numerical solution for the whole range of the oscillation amplitude, reducing the respective error of angular frequency in comparison with the variation approach method. It has been proved that the variational approach is very effective, convenient and does not require any linearization or small perturbation. Additionally it has been demonstrated that the variational approach is adequately accurate to nonlinear problems in physics and engineering.

  • Inductive dynamic drives (IDD) are ultra rapid actuators where the moving part (disc) is subjected to impulse force. This paper presents the second model of inductive dynamic drive - a mechanical model where analytic- numerical approach was applied. The magnetic pressure, which was determined on the basis of the results obtained in the electrodynamic model, becomes the input data for mechanical model. Research with application of the mechanical model is necessary in order to determine the proper disc oscillation frequency and to obtain the stress state control for drive elements to be designed. Also, the selection of drive parameters to keep the disc deformation insignificant (while oscillating) is a condition under which these models do not need to be coupled together.
