  • Uncertainties in loads, materials and manufacturing quality must be considered during electromagnetic devices design. This paper presents an effective methodology for robust optimization design based on the variance decomposition in order to keep higher accuracy of the robustness prediction. Sobol' theory is employed to estimate the response variance under some specific tolerance in design variables. Then, an optimal design is obtained by adding a criterion of response variance upon typical optimization problems as a constraint of the optimization. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed method applies the variance decomposition to obtain a more accurate variance of the response, as well save the computational cost. The performance and robustness of the proposed algorithms are investigated through a numerical experiment with both an analytic function and the TEAM 22 problem.

  • Using a level set method we develop a shape optimization method applied to energy flow problems in steady state. The boundaries are implicitly represented by the level set function obtainable from the 'Hamilton-Jacobi type' equation with the 'Up-wind scheme.' The developed method defines a Lagrangian function for the constrained optimization. It minimizes a generalized compliance, satisfying the constraint of allowable volume through the variations of implicit boundary. During the optimization, the boundary velocity to integrate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained from the optimality condition for the Lagrangian function. Compared with the established topology optimization method, the developed one has no numerical instability such as checkerboard problems and easy representation of topological shape variations.

  • In this present work, Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm (ABCA) is used to optimize the stacking sequences of simply supported antisymmetric laminated composite plates with criticial buckling load as the objective functions. The fibre orientations of the layers are selected as the optimization design variables with the aim to find the optimal laminated plates. In order to perform the optimization based on the ABCA, a special code is written in MATLAB software environment. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate this optimization algorithm for different plate aspect ratios, number of layers and load ratios.

  • For the improvement of aerodynamic performance of the turbine blade in a turbopump for the liquid rocket engine, the optimization of turbine profile shape has been studied. The turbine in a turbopump in this study is a partial admission of impulse type, which has twelve nozzles and supersonic inflow. Due to the separated nozzles and supersonic expansion, the flow field becomes complicates and shows oblique shocks and flow separation. To increase the blade power, redesign of the blade shape using CFD and optimization method was attempted. The turbine cascade shape was represented by four design parameters. For optimization, genetic algorithm based upon non-gradient search has been selected as a optimizer. As a result, the final blade has about 4 percent more blade power than the initial shape.

  • This paper is concerned with a computational approach for topology optimization of geometrically nonlinear structures following specific load-displacement trajectories. In our previous works, attention was paid to stabilize topology optimization involving large displacement and a method called the element connectivity parameterization was developed. Here, we aimed to extend the element connectivity parameterization method to find an optimal geometrically nonlinear structure yielding a specific load-displacement trajectory. In contrast to designing a stiffest structure, the trajectory design problem requires special consideration in topology optimization formulation and solution procedure. Some numerical problems were considered to test the developed element connectivity parameterization based formulation.

  • The main purpose of the present study is to perform shape optimizations of transonic compressor blade in order to enhance its performance. In this study, the Latin hypercube sampling of design of experiments and the weighted average surrogate model with the help of a gradient based optimization algorithm are used within design space by the lower and upper limits of each design variable and for finding optimum designs, respectively. 3-D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver is used to evaluate the objective functions of adiabatic efficiency and pressure ratio. Six variables from lean and airfoil thickness profile are selected as design variables. The results show that the adiabatic efficiency is enhanced by 1.43% by efficiency optimization while the pressure ratio is increased very small, and pressure ratio is increased by 0.24% by pressure ratio optimization.

  • This paper deals with an optimization approach of 3D space placement of power components under volume and thermal constraints. It consists in optimizing semiconductors positions on a heat sink by respecting the components junction temperatures and minimizing the heat sink size. The aim is to remove risks on the 3D converter components placement and ensure their effective integration before carrying out the first physical prototype. This approach is based on coupling an optimization environment with a thermal finite element simulation tool. A pre-sizing step using analytical models is performed to set the optimization computations coupled to numerical simulation.

  • In this paper feasible direction method which is one of the optimization method is adopted to natural frequency optimization. In order to find the optimum design of structures that have characteristic natural frequency range, a numerical optimization method to solving eigenvalue problems is a widely used approach. However most cases, it is difficult to decide the accurate thickness and shape of structures that have allowable natural frequency in design constraints. Parallel analysis algorithm involving the feasible direction optimization method and Rayleight-Ritz eigenvalue solving method is developed. The method is implemented by using finite element method. It calculated the optimal thickness and the thickness ratio of each element of 2-D plane element through the parallel algorithm method which satisfy the design constraint of natural frequency.

  • In order to minimize warping deformation which is an essential factor in the failure of injection molding parts, this study proposes an optimization design method fer determining design variables of injection molding parts. First, using a commercial package program for injection molding analysis, namely, Computer Aided Plastics Application(CAPA), we investigate the effects of parameters of injection molding process. Next, an optimum design process is established by interfacing CAPA to PQRSM embedded in EMD10S, a design framework developed by the conte. of innovative Design Optimization Technology(iDOT). PQRSM is a very efficient sequential approximate optimization algorithm. Optimum design results demonstrate the effectiveness of the design method suggested in this study by showing that the results of the optimum design is better than those of the initial design. It is believed that the proposed methodology can be applied to other injection molding design applications.

  • Numerical design optimization of a fan-shaped hole for film-cooling has been carried out to improve film-cooling effectiveness by combining a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis with the radial basis neural network method, a well known surrogate modeling technique for optimization. The injection angle of hole, lateral expansion angle of hole and ratio of length-to-diameter of the hole are chosen as design variables and spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness is considered as an objective function which is to be maximized. Twenty training points are obtained by Latin Hypercube sampling for three design variables. Sequential quadratic programming is used to search for the optimal point from the constructed surrogate. The film-cooling effectiveness has been successfully improved by the optimization with increased value of all design variables as compared to the reference geometry.
