In this paper, we study a cross-layer and end-to-end optimization problem for the integrated wireless and wireline network that consists of one wireline core network and multiple wireless access networks. We consider joint end-to-end flow control/distribution at the transport and network layers and opportunistic scheduling at the data link and physical layers. We formulate a single stochastic optimization problem and solve it by using a dual approach and a stochastic sub-gradient algorithm. The developed algorithm can be implemented in a distributed way, vertically among communication layers and horizontally among all entities in the network, clearly showing what should be done at each layer and each entity and what parameters should be exchanged between layers and between entities. Numerical results show that our cross-layer and end-to-end optimization approach provides more efficient resource allocation than the conventional layered and separated optimization approach.

The conventional optimization study for electromagnetic systems has been mostly on the shape or size optimization. The goal for these optimization methods is to improve performance of electromagnetic systems by optimizing the interface shape of two different materials while their given layout or initial topology are held. The feasible topology can be diverse and an appropriate topology will give much better design results. In this paper we propose a theory and an algorithm for topology optimization of electromagnetic systems, which are based on the finite element method. The topology optimization technique employes a direct searching method of sensitivity analysis in which the information of material sensitivity is used. Two numerical examples of a switched reluctance motor and an electrostatic actuator of MEMS are tested and their design results show that the optimization method is valid and useful for the topology and basic layout design of electromagnetic systems.

This paper describes a novel zero-stress member selecting method for sizing optimization of truss structures. When a sizing optimization method with static constraints is implemented, the member stresses are affected sensitively with changing the variables. However, because some truss members are unaffected by specific loading cases, zero-stress states are experienced by the elements. The zero-stress members could affect the computational cost and time of sizing optimization processes. Feature selection approaches can be then used to eliminate the zero-stress member from the whole variables prior to the process of optimization. Several numerical truss examples are tested using the proposed methods.
Temperature gradient focusing (TGF) of analytes via Joule heating is achieved when electric field is applied along a microchannel of varying width. The effect of varying width of the microchannel for the focusing performance of the device was numerically studied. The governing equations were implemented into a quasi-1D numerical model along a microchannel. The validity of the numerical model was verified by a comparison between numerical and experimental results. The distributions of temperature, velocity, and concentration along a microchannel were predicted by the numerical results. The narrower middle width and wider outside width of the channel having the fixed length contribute to improve the focusing performance of the device. However, too narrow middle width of the channel generates a higher temperature which can cause the problems including sample denaturation and buffer solution boiling. Therefore, the channel geometry should be optimized to prevent these problems. The optimal widths of the microchannel for the improvement on TGF were proposed and this model can be easily applied to lab-on-a-chip (LOC) applications where focusing is required based on its simple design.

This work is focused on a parametric numerical study of the barrier's bar inclination shelter effect in crosswind scenario. The parametric study combines mesh morphing and design of experiments in automated manner. Radial Basis Functions (RBF) method is used for mesh morphing and Ansys Workbench is used as an automation platform. Wind barrier consists of five bars where each bar angle is parameterized. Design points are defined using the design of experiments (DOE) technique to accurately represent the entire design space. Three-dimensional RANS numerical simulation was utilized with commercial software Ansys Fluent 14.5. In addition to the numerical study, experimental measurement of the aerodynamic forces acting on a vehicle is performed in order to define the critical wind disturbance scenario. The wind barrier optimization method combines morphing, an advanced CFD solver, high performance computing, and process automaters. The goal is to present a parametric aerodynamic simulation methodology for the wind barrier shelter that integrates accuracy and an extended design space in an automated manner. In addition, goal driven optimization is conducted for the most influential parameters for the wind barrier shelter.
A graphics system for optimum design(GOD) was developed for the various optimization programs. It is composed of a preprocessor and a postprocessor using the methods of pull-down and pop-up menus. The preprocessor of GOD system helps the designer to make a input file or a subprogram according to a selected optimization program. The postprocessor of the system display the numerical results generated during the iterative numerical analysis processes graphically in the graphic mode. Numerical examples as a mathematical linear problem and a 3-bar truss structure are presented to explain the use of GOD system. The system was programmed in one of the computer programming languages, Borland C.

We consider some numerical solution methods for equality-constrained quadratic problems in the context of structural analysis. Sparse orthogonal schemes for linear least squares problem are adapted to handle the solution step of the force method. We also examine these schemes with substructuring concepts.

본 고에서는 이러한 추세에 따라서, 보다 효율적인 optimization program에 대해서 소개하고자 한다. 사용한 최적화 알고리즘은 ALM(augmented lagrange multiplier) 방법을 적용해서 구속조건이 있는 문제를 구속조건이 없는 문제로 변환한 후, self-scaling BFGS(broydon-flecher-goldfarb-schanno)를 적용한다. BFGS의 각 descent 방향에서의 step 길이는, sequential search로 unimodal point를 구해서, golden section 방법으로 refine을 한후, cubic approximation을 적용해서 구한다.
This study describes an efficient and facile method for configuration optimum design of structures. One of the ways to achieve numerical shape representation and the selection of design variables is using the design element concept. Using this technique, the number of design variables could be drastically reduced. Isoparametric mapping was utilized to automatically generate the finite element mesh during the optimization process, and this made it possible to easily calculate the derivatives of the coordinates of generated finite element nodes w.r.t. the design variables. For the structural analysis, finite element analysis was adopted in the optimization procedure, and two different techniques(the deterministic method, a modified method of feasible direction; and the stochastic method, a genetic algorithms) were applied to obtain the minimum volumes and section areas for an efficient configuration optimization procedure. Futhermore, spline interpolation was introduced to present a realistic optimum configuration that meet the manufacturing requirements. According to the results of several numerical examples(steel structures), the two techniques suggested in this study simplified the process of configuration optimum design of structures, and yielded improved objective function values with a robust convergence rate. This study's applicability and capability have therefore been demonstrated.
