  • In this study, it was aimed to develop a thermal-hydraulic-mechanical coupled fracture mechanics code that models a fracture initiation, propagation and failure of underground rock mass due to thermal and hydraulic loadings. The development was based on a 2D FRACOD (Shen & Stephasson, 1993), and newly developed T-M and H-M coupled analysis modules were implemented into it. T-M coupling in FRACOD employed a fictitious heat source and time-marching method, and explicit iteration method was used in H-M coupling. The validity of developed coupled modules was verified by the comparison with the analytical result, and its applicability to the fracture initiation and propagation behavior due to temperature changes and hydraulic fracturing was confirmed by test simulations.

  • In order to use the limit equilibrium theory, it is necessary to find a slip line under the ultimate failure condition. The strength reduction method using the Lagrangian finite element method defines the ultimate failure state at a time when the numerical solution cannot converge within the certain number of the iteration. When the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method is used, however, such definition is inappropriate because the numerical solution of the CEL method can converge even under the ultimate failure condition. In this study, an objective condition designating the ultimate failure state in the finite element analysis adopting the CEL method was proposed. In the problem of the bearing capacity of the undrained soft ground subjected to the strip footing loading, we found that the rate of the plastic dissipated energy is highly sensitive at the load of the theoretical limit of the ultimate failure state.

  • An unstructured hybrid mesh flow solver has been developed for the simulation of three-dimensional steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with an artificial compressibility method were discretized by using a node-based finite-volume method. For the unsteady time-accurate computation, a dual-time stepping method was adopted to satisfy a divergence-free flow field at each physical time step. An implicit time integration method with local time stepping was implemented to accelerate the convergence in the pseudo-time sub-iteration procedure. The one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to solve high-Reynolds number flow fields. The flow solver was parallelized to minimize the CPU time and to overcome the computational overhead. This method has been applied to calculate steady and unsteady flow fields around submarine configurations and a 3-D infinite cylinder. Validations were made by comparing the predicted results with those of experiments or other numerical results. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields.

  • We propose methods of linear transceiver design for two different power constraints, sum relay power constraint and per relay power constraint, which determine signal processing matrices such as base station (BS) transmitter, relay precoders and user receivers to minimize sum mean square error (SMSE) for multi-relay multi-user (MRMU) networks. However, since the formulated problem is non-convex one which is hard to be solved, we suboptimally solve the problems by defining convex subproblems with some fixed variables. We adopt iterative sequential designs of which each iteration stage corresponds to each subproblem. Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) theorem and SMSE duality are employed as specific methods to solve subproblems. The numerical results verify that the proposed methods provide comparable performance to that of a full relay cooperation bound (FRCB) method while outperforming the simple amplify-and-forward (SAF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) relaying in terms of not only SMSE, but also the sum rate.

  • A more applicable optimization model for extracting flutter derivatives of bridge decks is presented, which is suitable for time-varying weights for fitting errors and different lengths of vertical bending and torsional free vibration data. A stochastic search technique for searching the optimal solution of optimization problem is developed, which is more convenient in understanding and programming than the alternate iteration technique, and testified to be a valid and efficient method using two numerical examples. On the basis of the section model test of Sutong Bridge deck, the flutter derivatives are extracted by the stochastic search technique, and compared with the identification results using the modified least-square method. The Empirical Mode Decomposition method is employed to eliminate noise, trends and zero excursion of the collected free vibration data of vertical bending and torsional motion, by which the identification precision of flutter derivatives is improved.

  • Buckling and post-buckling cases are often occurred in aorta artery because it affected by higher pressure. Also, its stability has a vital importance to humans and animals. The loss of stability in arteries may lead to arterial tortuosity and kinking. In this paper, post-buckling analysis of aorta artery is investigated under axial compression loads on the basis of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory by using finite element method. It is known that post-buckling problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. In the geometrically nonlinear model, the Von Karman nonlinear kinematic relationship is employed. Two types of support conditions for the aorta artery are considered. The considered non-linear problem is solved by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. The aorta artery is modeled as a cylindrical tube with different average diameters. In the numerical results, the effects of the geometry parameters of aorta artery on the post-buckling case are investigated in detail. Nonlinear deflections and critical buckling loads are obtained and discussed on the post-buckling case.

  • SLSV (single loop single vector) method is to solve the excessive computational cost problem in RBDO (reliability-based design optimization) by decoupling the nested iteration loops. However, the practical use of SLSV method to RBDO case is limited by the instability or inaccuracy of the method since it often diverges or converges to a wrong solution. Thus, in this paper, a new modified SLSV method is proposed. This method improves its convergence capability effectively by utilizing Inactive Design and Active MPP Design together with modified HMV (hybrid mean value) method. The usefulness of the proposed method is also verified through numerical examples.

  • A basic design on a flexible riser in a floating type development system for upwelling deep ocean water is presented. In the numerical study, an implicit finite difference algorithm is employed for three-dimensional riser equations. Fluid and geometric non-linearity and bending stiffness are considered and solved by Newton-Raphson iteration. To keep the depth of end point of a flexible and light riser is very important for upwelling deep ocean water in a floating type development system. Weight attached at the end point of the riser in order to keep its intake depth is designed under the strong surface current and the configuration of the riser is predicted. The results of this study can be contributed to the design of the development system in floating type for upwelling deep ocean water.

  • The problem of structural topology optimization can be relaxed and converted into the optimal density distribution problem. The optimal density distribution must be post-processed to get the real shape of the structure. The extracted shape can then be used for the next process, which is usually shape optmization based on the boundary movement method. In the practical point of view, it is very important to get the optimal density distribution from which the corresponding shape can easily be extracted. Among many other factors, the presence of checker-board patterns is a powerful barrier for the shape extraction job. The nature of checker-board patterns seems to be a numerical locking. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is presented to suppress the checker-board patterns. At each iteration, density is re-distributed after it is updated according to the optimization rule. The algorithm also results in the optimal density distribution whose corresponding shape has smooth boundary. Some examples are presented to show the performance of the density re-distribution algorithm. Checker-board patterns are successfully suppressed and the resulting shapes are considered very satisfactory.

  • DDA (Discontinuous Deformation Anlaysis) is one of the latest numerical analysis which has merits of both FEM and DEM. In this research a new edge-to-edge contact algorithm was applied on DDA. With adoption of new edge-to-edge contact state definition, sub-algorithm was improved about open-close iteration, contact state judge, contact detecting, and friction forces acting on joints. Newly applied DDA was verified based on two different cases. The DDA results show good agreement with numerically predicted one.
