  • Observed from the recent performance evaluation of clustering schemes in wireless sensor networks, we found that most of them did not consider various sensor characteristics and its application environment. Without considering these, the performance evaluation results are difficult to be trusted because these networks are application-specific. In this paper, for the fair evaluation, we measured several clustering scheme's performance variations in accordance with sensor data pattern, number of sensors per node, density of points of interest (data density) and sensor coverage. According to the experiment result, we can conclude that clustering methods are easily influenced by POI variation. Network lifetime and data accuracy are also slightly influenced by sensor coverage and number of sensors. Therefore, in the case of the clustering scheme that did not consider various conditions, fair evaluation cannot be expected.

  • The physical security layer of industrial wireless sensor networks in the event of an eavesdropping attack has been investigated in this paper. An optimal sensor selection scheme based on the maximum channel capacity is proposed for transmission environments that experience Nakagami fading. Comparing the intercept probabilities of the traditional round robin (TRR) and optimal sensor selection schemes, the system secure performance is analyzed. Simulation results show that the change in the number of sensors and the eavesdropping ratio affect the convergence rate of the intercept probability. Additionally, the proposed optimal selection scheme has a faster convergence rate compared to the TRR scheduling scheme for the same eavesdropping ratio and number of sensors. This observation is also valid when the Nakagami channel is simplified to a Rayleigh channel.

  • The transmission characteristics of multi-channel long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in terms of the physical parameters like the separation distance, grating length and number of gratings will be discussed. Their transmission characteristics such as channel spacing, number of channels, loss peak depth, and channel bandwidth can be easily controlled by physical parameters. Based on the experimental results, their applications to optical multiwavelength Raman lasers and optical sensors will be investigated. A multiwavelength Raman fiber ring laser with 9 WDM channels with 100 ㎓ spacing and 19 channels with 50 ㎓ spacing using tunable multi-channel LPFGs will be experimentally demonstrated. The fiber-optic sensing applications with high resolution and sensitivity based on multi-channel LPFGs will be also presented.

  • Switched Reluctance motors(SRM) attract much attention in motor because they are reliable and inexpensive. With advance in power electronics and high-speed processors the performance of SRM has been enhanced greatly. But they require rotor position information to operate, In many systems rotor position sensors are undesirable and have disadvantages. To overcome the disadvantages include by position sensors a number of sensorless methods for SRM's have been proposed by researchers. This paper describes a method for indirect sensing of rotor position in SRM's pulsewidth modulation voltage control. The method required no priori knowledge of motor parameters excepts for the number of stator and rotor poles. The detection method uses the change of the derivative of the phase current to detect the position.

  • A signal generated by partial discharge in low density Polyethylene (LDPE) and cross- linked polyethylene (XLPE) has been detected by ultrasonic sensors. The observed signal is analysed with the quantity of partial discharge, number of peaks, and energy ($\Sigma$y$^2$). It was found that signals between LDPE and XLPE are quite different and that the signal of XLPE has very long duration time and rising time, and that the quantity of partial discharge of XLPE is saturated. It was also found that tree retardant XLPE (TR-XLPE) has lower quantity of partial discharge, number of peaks, and energy than naturalal XLPE.

  • This paper deals with an architecture of network-based control system using the CAN(Controller Area Network) protocol and its traffic analysis. It is difficult to determine an optimal network-based control architecture for a specific AGV(Autonomous Guided Vehicle) system with a manipulator arm. The fixed number of periodic messages to be occurred is pre-defined in the system. To determine whether the proposed system architecture is effective or not, we perform traffic analysis for the real-time communication of all messages. Through simulations, the range of transmission speed is found satisfying required conditions and the permissible number of additional sensors is investigated for improving the system performance, when the sampling periods of analog sensors are determined under fixed condition that the transmission speed is over 500Kbps.

  • In this paper, we analyzed underwater multiple sensors acoustic communication technologies for monitoring and control of offshore plants in underwater environments. Information on underwater structure of offshore plants is transmitted and received by multiple sensors at the same time. Using multiple sensors with same frequency, we employed spread spectrum techniques to avoid interferences between these multiple sensors. Owing to the multi-path characteristic in underwater communications, the performance is degraded. In order to improve the performance of underwater multiple sensors communication, we proposed turbo equalized RAKE receiver structures. Assuming that the number of sensors is fixed to three, we conformed the effectiveness of the proposed method as compared to the conventional one.

  • Nowadays, a number of sensors which are placed in industrial complex are monitoring areas involving chemical leak and other faults. However, even in the presence of the sensors, chemical leaks, sometimes involving huge amount of chemicals, continuously led to big losses in the industrial complex. In most industries, sensor installation has been performed using past experience or using senor manufacturers' guideline; which leads to poor performance of the installed sensor grid. Therefore, we investigate an optimal placement methodology of point sensors for rapid detention and response when chemical leaks happen. This research suggests a generalized formulation suitable for the optimized decision making of minimizing number of sensors to be placed and increasing the fraction of covered scenarios under assumption of negligible effect of other structures. The proposed method has been verified for suitable performance for simple leak scenario simulations, by achieving the safety objectives and guaranteeing safe process operations.

  • Flowmeters that measure the amount of fluid passing through conduits must kept accurate by comparison and the periodic calibration. The reference meters used are clamp-on meters that mount sensors on the outer wall of the pipe. They are called 1-path, 2-path or 4-path flowmeters depending on the number of sensors. We selected a flowmeter mainly used for K-water as test a flowmeter. We carried out experiments to find the intrinsic error of the flowmeter and errors in the downstream of a double bent pipe. The results show that there are the sensor locations that meet the tolerance. We suggested the angle of the sensor, the straight run from the downstream of the bent pipe and the number of sensors. So it is possible to improve the water treatment process and increase the accounted water rate by upgraded flow measurement technology.

  • This investigation is aimed to develop a model of experimental-computation determination of a support moment of a cantilever beam loaded with concentrated force at its end including the optimal choice of coordinates of deflection data points and parameters of transformation of deflection data in case of insufficient accuracy of the assignment of initial parameters (support settlement, angle of rotation of the bearing section) and cantilever beam length. The influence of distribution and characteristics of sensors on the cantilever beam on the accuracy of determining the support moment which improves in the course of transition from the uniform distribution of sensors to optimal non-uniform distribution is shown. On the basis of the theory of inverse problems the method of transformation reduction at numerical differentiation of deflection functions has been studied. For engineering evaluation formulae of uncertainty estimate to determine a support moment of a cantilever beam at predetermined uncertainty of measurements using sensors have been obtained.
