  • This research examined the Korean and American $6^{th}$ grade students' mathematical problem solving ability and methods via an intuitive thinking. For this, the survey research was used. The researcher developed the questionnaire which consists of problems with intuitive and algorithmic problem solving in number and operation, figure and measurement areas. 57 Korean $6^{th}$ grade students and 60 American $6^{th}$ grade students participated. The result of the analysis showed that Korean students revealed a higher percentage than American students in correct answers. But it was higher in the rate of Korean students attempted to use the algorithm. Two countries' students revealed higher rates in that they tried to solve the problems using intuitive thinking in geometry and measurement areas. Students in both countries showed the lower percentages of correct answer in problem solving to identify the impact of counterintuitive thinking. They were affected by potential infinity concept and the character of intuition in the problem solving process regardless of the educational environments and cultures.

  • This study aims to examine consumer types based on pet food selection attributes and to analyze the differences in consumer characteristics by those types. In this study, the researcher uses k-means cluster analysis and crossover analysis to determine market segmention, and then analyzes the resultant characteristics by categorizing consumers. A total of 202 cases are used for this study. First, the selection attributes are classified into the six factors of credibility, quality, design, convenience, information, and price. Second, the clusters are categorized into the four clusters, which are designated pet food lower-involvement type, pet food information- and price-seeking type, pet food convenience-seeking type, and pet food higher-involvement type. Third, these four groups exhibit statistically significant differences in terms of occupational variables, number of pets, and purchase frequency. The results of this study may provide helpful information in establishing customized, market-based marketing strategies based on the characteristics of pet food consumers.

  • This paper reports the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer swirl on the instability modes of underexpanded supersonic jets emerging from plane rectangular nozzles. The effects of boundary layer swirl at the nozzle exit on thrust and mixing of supersonic rectangular jets are also considered. The previous study was performed with a 30°boundary layer swirl (S=0.41) in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. At this study, a 45°boundary layer swirl (S=1.0) is applied in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. A three-dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code with Baldwin-Lomax and Chiens $\kappa$-$\xi$ two-equation turbulence models was used for numerical simulation. A shock adaptive grid system was applied to enhance shock resolution. The nozzle aspect ratio used in this study was 5.0, and the fully-expanded jet Mach number was 1.526. The \"flapping\" and \"pumping\" oscillations were observed in the jets small dimension at frequencies of about 3,900Hz and 7,800Hz, respectively. In the jets large dimension, \"spanwise\" oscillations at the same frequency as the small dimensions \"flapping\" oscillations were captured. As reported before with a 30°nozzle exit boundary layer swirl, the induction of 45°swirl to the nozzle exit boundary layer also strongly enhances jet mixing with the reduction of thrust by 10%.

  • Biologists are attempting to group genes based on the temporal pattern of gene expression levels. So far, a number of methods have been proposed for clustering microarray data. However, the results of clustering depends on the genes selection, therefore the gene selection with significant expression difference is also very important to cluster for microarray data. Thus, this paper present the results of broad comparative studies to time course microarray data by considering methods of gene selection, clustering and cluster validation.

  • This descriptive-correlational study was undertaken in order to examine if there were relationships between family support, compliance and life satisfaction in chronic arthritis patients. The sampling method was a non-probability, purposive sampling technique. The participants of this study were 92 volunteer adults. 1) who have been diagnosed as having chronic arthritis and 2) who were at the medical out patient clinic of one university hospital in Seoul between April 27th to May 12th 1987. The instruments used for this study were the Family Support Scale developed by Kang Hyun Sook, a Compilance Scale developed by the researcher and the Life-Satisfaction Index-Z developed by Wood et.al. Analysis of data was done using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of study were as follows; Hypothesis I; “The higher the family support, the higher the compliance” was accepted. (r=.2604, p<.01) Hypothesis II; “The higher the compliance, the higher the life satisfaction,” was rejected. (r=.1663, p>0.5) Hypothesis III; “The higher the family support, the higher the life satisfaction” was accepted. (r=.3914, p<.01) In addition, by using Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis it was determined that the main influencing factors on the life satisfaction were family support, the number of inflammatory joints, compliance and pain level. These 4 main variables made it possible to explain 30.8% of the variance in life satisfaction. In conclusion, this study revealed that family support is an important factor that can improve compliance and life satisfaction in chronic arthritis patients.
