Numerical Analysis of Laminar Natural Convection Heat Transfer around Two Vertical Fins by a Spectral Finite Difference Method

  • A numerical solution is presented for the natural convection heat transfer from two vertical fins using a spectral finite difference method. Virtual distant boundary conditions for two bodies that are compatible with plume behavior and with an overall continuity condition are introduced. A boundary-fitted coordinate system is formed. Streamlines, isotherms, mean Nusselt numbers and drag & lift coefficients are presented for a variety of dimensionless parameters such as a Grashof number and a Prandtl number at a steady-state. Extensive effectiveness of a spectral finite difference method was established.

  • In the present study, natural convection over a heat sink with a horizontal circular base and rectangular fins was numerically analyzed. To calculate natural convection heat transfer, the assumptions of ideal gas and laminar flow were made for air. Flow patterns around the heat sink were chimney-like. The resultant temperature distribution on the circular base appeared almost uniform. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effects of fin length, fin height, the ideal number of fins, and heat flux on the average temperature of a heat sink and the average heat transfer coefficient from the heat sink array. Correlation to predict the average Nusselt number was presented.

Morphological of Development Eggs, Larvae and Juveniles Gymnogobius urotaenia in Hwangbocheon, Korea (황보천에 서식하는 꾹저구 Gymnogobius urotaenia의 난발생 및 자치어 형태발달)

  • This study compared the results of observing the early life history of Gymnogobius urotaenia, which lives in Hwangbocheon Stream, an inflow stream on the east coast, with the differences between fish of the same Gobiidae fishes. In May 2022 and 2023, fertilized eggs and brood stork scattered under rocks were captured twice in Hwangbocheon Stream. The spawning amount was 827~1,540 and the orchid was a elliptical in shape with a size of 3.21×1.07 mm. The stage of ovulation observed in the laboratory was 16 cells, and hatching began after 193 hours. The breeding water temperature range was 18.8~19.3℃. Newly after hatching larvae, the yolk sac with a total length of 3.84~4.33 (average 4.10±0.17, n=30) mm, and the anus was not open. 6 days after hatching of incubation, the total length was 5.32~6.11 (average 5.67±0.25, n=30) mm, absorbing all egg yolk and transitioning to the preflexion larvae, ingesting food, and developing a keynote on the tail fin. 15 days after hatching, the end of the urostyle end was completely bent at 45° with a total length of 7.33~8.52 (average 7.81±0.46, n=30) mm and transitioned to postflexion larvae, and melanophore developed throughout the body. 38 days after hatching, the total length is 22.1~26.1 (23.8±1.36, n=30) mm and the number of fins (6 first dorsal fins, 11 second dorsal fins, and 11 anal fins, 12 ventral fins) is all the number of fin base became integer and transferred to the juvenile. As a result of the study, it was possible to distinguish the melanophore of postflexion larvae of G. urotaenia from other postflexion larvae Gobiidae fish in that they were distributed throughout the body of half the body and tail.

A Study on Heatsink Temperature Distribution according to the Installation Angle of a 30W LED Floodlight (30W급 LED 투광등 설치각도에 따른 히트싱크 온도분포에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the heat dissipation characteristics of a heat-sensitive LED. The results of the empirical test showed that the best temperature intensification was found at 90 with 15-fins, and the heatsink installed perpendicular to the direction of the flow of air was directly connected to the air in the largest heat shield area, leading to the best cooling, and the number of fin also resulted increase in the heat discharge area, resulting in the largest cooling action with 15 fins. It was found that the rate of air flow changed in the range of 1.5m/s to 2.5m/s, but only by a deviation of about $2^{\circ}C$ to $3^{\circ}C$ from the current state of 15 fins at 2.5m/s, and the rate of air flow increased, but the performance of the heat release was not significantly increased. As a result wind speed with minimum air flow conditions of 1.5m/s can greatly contribute to the heat dissipation performance.

  • Mature spermatozoa of dark chub Zacco temmincki (Temminck and Schlegel), were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The spermatozoa have a spherical, homogeneously electron-dense nucleus with an axial nuclear fossa containing two laterally oriented centrioles. The centrioles, which are arranged at about a $120^{\circ}$ angle to each other, have the 9+2 microtubule structure typical of flagella. The mature spermatozoon is of the primitive anacrosomal aquasperm type. The nuclear envelope is strongly undulated and contains nuclear vacuoles of different sizes and positions. The midpiece contains six or more mitochondria and encircles the basal body of the flagellum with an axoneme covered by the plasma membrane. Cytoplasmic vesicles lie between the axonemal doublets and the plasma membrane, and encircle the anterior part of the tail. The plasma membrane of the flagellum extends laterally and forms a pair of side fins. The species showed minor differences in number and structure of mitochondria, the angle between centrioles, and total length and occurrence of the fins. These characters, especially the side fins, appear to be apomorphic and useful for determining phylogenetic relationships at the genus or family level.

  • Morphology of the spermatozoa from the testes of the catfish (Pseudobagrus brevicorpus) was studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The spermatozoa of P. brevicorpus are approximately $82.25\pm0.06\;{\mu}m$ in length and relatively simple cells composed of a spherical head, a short midpiece and a tail as in most teleost fish, The nucleus measuring about $2.00\pm0.02\;{\mu}m$ in length is depressed with a deep nuclear fossa of about $1.05\pm0.03\;{\mu}m$ in length three fifths of the nuclear length. The nuclear fossa contains the proximal and distal centrioles. The two centrioles are oriented approximately $150^{\circ}$ to each other. The mitochondria are arranged in two layers and their number is 12 or more. They are separated from the axoneme by the cytoplasmic canal. The axoneme is the 9+2 microtubular pattern and has inner but no outer dynein arms as in other bagrids. The axonemal fins were the closed to axonemal doublet 3 and 8. The axonemal fins and lost outer dynein arm are shared in Bagridae and the deep nuclear fossa is shared in Siluriformes. The axonemal fins observed in Bagridae and Amblycipitidae of Siluriformes might be the apomorphic character in Ostariophysi.

Rate Augmentation of Exothermic Hydration in the CaO Packed Bed (CaO 충전층의 수화발열반응 촉진)

  • Heat release characteristics of a CaO packed bed reactor which is used for a chemical heat storage device has been studied. We employed Cu-plate fins to release the heat of reaction of the CaO packed bed inside the reactor fast and effectively. Two-dimensional analysis of unsteady state heat flow inside the bed was performed as a function of time and under various conditions of the Cu-plates. It is noted that the time required to release the heat of reaction with Cu fins is reduced more than twice fast compared to that without Cu fins. That was largely dependent upon the number of Cu-plate, as well.

  • An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using the constant temperature anemometer and through flow visualization. Previous report(Boo et al., 2001) shows that there are three different modes in vortex shedding behavior. This paper is focused on the identification of the physical reasons why the difference iss occured in vortex shedding. The through flow velocity crossing fins decreases as increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch mainly due to the flow resistence. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by velocity distribution around fin tube, especially by the velocity gradient. The velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Those differences in velocity gradients generate different vortex shedding mechanism.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in a compact heat exchanger with flat tubes and continuous plate fins according to the aspect ratio. RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model is applied for turbulence analysis. Simulation results such as air velocity and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer coefficients are compared with previous correlations for circular tubes. The numerical conditions are considered for the aspect ratios ranging from 3.06 to 5.44 and Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 10,000. The results showed that heat transfer coefficients decreased with the increase of aspect ratio. From the calculated results a correlation of Colburn j factor for the considered aspect ratio in the compact heat exchanger system is suggested. The predicted results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of air conditioning system.

Evaluation of Heat Release Performance of Swaged- and Extruded-type Heat Sink Used in Industrial Inverter (산업용 인버터에 사용되는 압입식 및 압출식 히트싱크의 방열 성능 평가)

  • In this experiment, we investigated the performance of two types of heat sink, swaged- and extruded-type, used in the inverter of industrial electricity generator. The swaged-type heat sink has 62 fins, and the extruded-type has 38 fins having the same dimension as that of the swaged-type. But the extruded-type heat sink maintains the same heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface which has 1 mm in radius. As a result, the swaged- and extruded-type heat sinks released 70.7% and 63.8% of the heat incoming to the heat sink, respectively. The other incoming heat were naturally convected and radiated to the ambient. In spite of 40% decrease in number of fins, the heat release performance of the extruded-type heat sink was lowered only 6.9% than that of the swaged-type. We believe that, this shows the increment of effective heat transfer area by the laterally waved surface of fins and the better heat transfer property of the extruded-type heat sink.
