  • This paper concerns the use of derivative null constraint in an adaptive array pmcessor in the spatial and frequency domains with respect to a composite array processor to obtain a modified composite array processor. It is assumed that the frequency of interference signals is the same as that of a desired signal, interference directions are different from the desired signal, and interference directions and frequencies are known. Simulation results demonstrate that a higher-order derivative null broadens the null width which is appropriate for eleminating a broadband interference and a zero-order derivative null (i.e., a simple point null) with respect to frequency reduces the residual error inherent in the composite array precessor.

  • If broadband interference signals are incident at an array of sensor/antenna elements, it is desirable to form a set of bnoadband nulls around the directions of the interference signals to improve the array performance. An efficient way of generating a broadband null is to synthesize a derivative null. The performance of a derivative null in a constrained linear array which is subjected to random variations with respect to array weight and element Position is discussed. Computer simulation results are presented.

  • In this work, we study the conditions between null geodesic curves and timelike ruled surfaces in dual Lorentzian space. For this study, we establish a system of differential equations characterizing timelike ruled surfaces in dual Lorentzian space by using the invariant quantities of null geodesic curves on the given ruled surfaces. We obtain the solutions of these systems for special cases. Regarding to these special solutions, we give some results of the relations between null geodesic curves and timelike ruled surfaces in dual Lorentzian space.

  • When an observable is described by a single value, the statistic significance may be estimated by construction of null distribution using permutation and counting the portion of it that exceeds the observed value by chance. Genome-wide association study usually focuses on the association measure between a single or interacting genotypes with a single phenotype. However investigation of common genotypes associated simultaneously on multiple phenotypes may involve the observables that should be described with multiple numbers. Statistical significance for such an observable would involve null distribution in multiple dimensions. In this study, extension of the p-value estimation process using null distribution in one dimension has been sought that may be applicable to two dimensional case. Comparison of the position of points within the set of points they form has been proposed to use a positioning parameter inspired by the extension of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic to two dimensions.

  • Aim: To evaluate the association of glutathione S-transferases gene polymorphisms with the risk of gastric cancer, with reference to smoking and Helicobacter pylori infection. Methods: We conducted a 1:1 matched case-control study with 410 gastric cancer cases and 410 cancer-free controls. Polymorphisms of GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 were determined using PCR-CTPP. Results: The GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes were significantly associated with the risk of gastric cancer after adjusting for potential confounding factors (OR=1.68, 95% CI=1.32-2.23 for null GSTM1, OR=1.73; 95% CI=1.24-2.13 for null GSTT1). The combination of null GSTM1 and null GSTT1 conferred an elevated risk (OR=2.54, 95% CI=1.55-3.39). However, no association was found for GSTP1 polymorphism The smoking modified the association of GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes with the risk of gastric cancer. Conclusion: GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes are associated with increased risk of gastric cancer, and smoking modifies the association.

  • Background: Tobacco contains agents which generate various potent DNA adducts that can cause gene mutations. Production of DNA adducts may be neutralized by glutathione S transferase (GST) along with other phase I and phase II enzyme systems. The existence of null type of GST among the population increases the susceptibility to various disorders and diseases. The present study focuses on the impact of high tobacco usage and possible null type mutation in GST loci. Methods: Genotypes of GST were detected by multiplex polymerase chain reaction in unrelated 504 volunteers of high tobacco using natives of Gujarat. Allelic frequencies were calculated using Statistical Package for Social Studies-16 software. Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) was calculated using Chi square test. Two sided Fisher's significance test was used to compare allelic frequencies of different populations. Results: The frequency of homozygous null genotype of GSTM1 and GSTT1 were 20% (95% CI 16.7-23.9) and 35.5% (95% CI 31.4-39.9) respectively. The GSTM1 and GSTT1 null allele frequency distribution in the Gujarat population was significantly deviating from HWE. GSTT1 null frequency of Gujaratians was significantly higher and different to all reported low tobacco using Indian ethnics, while GSTM1 was not differing significantly. Conclusion: Tobacco usage significantly influences the rate of mutation and frequency of GSTT1 and M1 null types among the habituates. The rate of mutation in GSTT1 loci was an undeviating response to the dose of tobacco usage among the population. This mutational impact of tobacco on GSTT1 postulates the possible gene - environment interaction and selection of null genotype among the subjects to prone them under susceptible status for various cancers and even worst to cure the population with GSTT1 dependent drugs.

  • We constructed the null mutants of fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe rsml gene that is thought to be involved in mRNA export. Though rsm1 gene is not essential for growth, the null mutant strain constructed by replacing the rsm1-coding region with an $kan^{r}$ gene showed growth retardation and mRNA export defects compared to wild type strain. We constructed double mutants which harbor rsm1 null allele and mutant allele of genes involved in mRNA export. The mex67 or npp106 null allele, when combined with rsm1 null allele, showed an additive effect on growth retardation and mRNA export defects. On the other hand, the thp1 null allele restored the defects of growth and mRNA export of rsm1 null mutant. These results suggest that rsm1 plays a role in mRNA export from the nucleus.

  • We designed and fabricated an improved null-type torque magnetometer for measuring magnetic anisotropy of magnetic materials. This torque magnetometer has a measurement range of $~{\pm}15$ dyne.cm, and the range can be controlled. Resolution is ~0.0005 dyne.cm. Noise level is less than 0.01 dyne.cm with one measurement, and less than 0.004 dyne.cm with 10 averaged measuremets. The precision is less than 0.5 %. In contrast to typical null-type torque magnetometers, we placed a small ferrite magnet in the Helmholtz coil, instead of placing coil in the permanent magnet. From this novel sturucture, we can design a geometrically isotropic and relatively light-weight sample rod. Also, we can prevent the effect of input and output lines of coil exposed in the magnetic field in torque meter. Consequently, our novel null-type torque magnetometer can have a better sensitivity, faster response time, and smaller distortion of torque curve than commercially available torque magnetometers.

  • We design and fabricate an autostigmatic null lens system assembled in a fixed tube mount in order to evaluate the shape of an aluminum hyperbolic mirror with the diameter of 300 mm and the f-number of 1.98, which is fabricated by a high precision aspherical DTM (diamond turning machine). Also, we evaluate the degree of shape of the aspherical mirror by this autostigmatic null lens testing method. The autostigmatic null lens system assembling in a fixed tube mount has several advantages of light weight, good mechanical stability, etc. The permissible fabricating limits of null lenses and a mount are determined by considering various tolerances to assure the measurement reliability.
