  • Weathering of biotite in Palgonsan granite was studied by using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe micro analysis. Biotite altered to biotite/vermiculite regular mixed layer mineral (B/V) in the early stage of weathering. Although partially replaced by kaolinite with the progress of weathering. B/V is the major weathering product of biotite throughout the profile. During the formation of B/V, Mg, Fe and K are removed from a biotite layer to form a vermiculite layer by about 28%, 44% and 88%, respectively, whereas the Ti content is not changed. Considerable volume increase after the kaolinitization of B/V suggests that Al and Si are largely introduced from the external weathering solution. The silicate lattice templet of a weathering biotite facilitated the nucleation and growth of kaolinite. In the Palgongsan granite weathering profile, plagioclase weathered mostly into halloysite whereas biotite greatly contributes to the kaolinite crystallization though its small content in fresh rock.

  • The adhesion of electroless plated Ni layer on Al/Si substrates has been investigated. The zincating treatment was conducted with a conventional method and a modified method. In a modified method, ultrasonic agitation was applied during zincating. Adhesion strength was evaluated by a pull-off test. The ultrasonic agitation during zincating increased the nucleation density of Zn particles and refined Zn particle size. the adhesion strength of electroless Ni layer deposited on the modified zincated surface was higher than that on the conventionally zincated surface. the improvement of adhesion was attributed to the fine and dense Zn particles.

  • Ferroelectric PZT heterolayered thin films were fabricated by spin coating method on the Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrate using PZT(10/90) and PZT(90/10) metal alkoxide solutions. All PZT heterolayered films showed a homogeneous grain structure without presence of the rosette structure. It can be assumed that the lower PZT layers a role of nucleation site or seeding layer for the formation of the upper PZT layer. Zr and Ti diffusion into the Pt electrode were mainly distributed at the surface of Pt electrode beneath the PZT/Pt interface. The PZT/Pt interfacial layer showed a microstructure characterized by a grain phase surrounded by a Pb-deficient pyrochlore matrix phase. The relative dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the PZT-6 film were 567 and 3.6, respectively.

  • A novel electrostatic spraying method to solidify molten zinc coating layer was studied by SEM and measurement of sample's temperature. The sprayed droplets also served as nucleation sites in the solidification reaction of molten zinc but might leave the pitting mark by impinging on its surface especially at high spray pressure. Our experimental results showed that electric field could change the sprayed particle trajectories and assist the fine droplets to attach on the surface. Thus, by reducing the spray pressure and by applying the electric voltage higher than -20 KV to charge the droplets electrostatically, we could produce the spangle free galvanized coating layer without pitting.

  • Change of magnetic properties in CoCrPt/Ti perpendicular media with varying CoCrPt films thickness has been studied. As CoCrPt films thickness increase, the Ms(magnetization saturation) drastically increases at thinner thickness and gradually increases with further increase in thickness from 25nm. This Ms behaviour is associated with primarily the formation of "amorphous-like" reacted layer by intermixing of CoCrPt and Ti at CoCrPt/Ti interface and secondarily change of Cr segregation mode with varying the CoCrPt films thickness. Magnetic domain structure distinctively changes with increasing CoCrPt magnetic layer(ML) thickness. Also the strength of exchange coupling measured from the slope in demagnetizing region in M-H loop changes with ML thickness. Details of the above magnetic properties will be discussed. The expansion of lattice parameters a and c at thinner thickness suggests that Cr segregation mode may be connected with the residual stress of the films. Finally, negative nucleation field(Hn) behaviour with the exchange slope will be reported.

  • In this work, effect of zincate treatment of AZ91 Mg alloy on the following electrodeposition of copper was examined in a non-cyanide bath containing pyrophosphate ions in view of surface morphology and adhesion of the electrodeposited copper layer. Without zincate treatment, the electrodeposited copper layer showed very porous structure and poor adhesion. On the other hand, the copper layer electrodeposited on the zincate-treated surface showed dense structure and good adhesion. The dissolution rate of AZ91 Mg alloy after the zincate treatment appeared to decrease about 40 times in the copper pyrophosphate bath, as compared to that of the surface without zincate treatment. The porous morphology and poor adhesion of a copper layer on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface without zincate treatment were attributed to small number of nucleation sites of copper because of rapid dissolution of the magnesium substrate in the pyrophosphate bath. Based on the experimental results, it is concluded that the zincate treatment to form a conducting and protecting layer on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface is essential for successful electrodeposition of a copper layer on AZ91 Mg alloy with good adhesion and dense structure in the copper pyrophosphate bath.

  • Asymmetric polymeric membranes prepared by the phase transition technique usually have either a top layer consisting of closely packed nodules or pores dispersed throughout the membrane surfaces. In this study, we present AFM image of a polysulfone membrane which show a clear evidence for the nodular structure and porous structure resulted from different phase separation mechanisms; spinodal decomposition and nucleation and growth. The surface morphology obtained by SEM and AFM was also compared.

  • This paper was focused on the wear characteristics of ion-nitrided metal and with ion-nitride processing, which is basically concerned with the effects of carbon content in workpiece and added carbon content gas atmosphere on the best wear performance. Increased carbon content in workpiece increases compound layer thickness, but decreases diffusion layer thickness. On the other hand, a small optimal amount of carbon content in gas atmosphere increase compound layer thickness as well as diffusion layer thickness and hardness. Wear tests show that the compound layer of ion-nitrided metal reduces wear rate when the applied wear load is small. However, as the load becomes large, the existence of compound layer tends to increase wear rate. Compressive residual stress at the compound layer is the largest at the compound layer, and decreases as the depth from the surface increases. It is found in the analysis that under small applied load, the critical depth where voids and cracks may be created and propagated is located at the compound layer, so that the adhesive wear is created and the existence of compound layer reduces the amount of wear. When the load becomes large, the critical depth is located below the compound layer and delamination, which may explained by surface deformation, crack nucleation and propagation, is created and the existence of compound layer increases wear rate. For the compound layer, at added carbon contents of 0 percent and 0.5 at. percent, the $\varepsilon$ monophase is predominant. But at 0.7 at. percent added carbon, the $\varepsilon$ monophase formation tends to be severely inhibited and r' and $Fe_3C$ polyphase formation becomes dominant. This increased hard $\varepsilon$ phase layer was observed to be more beneficial in reducing friction and wear.

  • The rheological properties of highly concentrated Ag nano sol depending on particle size were studied. The Ag nano sol was prepared by reducing the Ag ion in aqueous solution. The size of Ag nano particle was controlled by two steps of nucleation and growth, and the thickness of adsorption layer was varied by molecular weight of polyelectrolytes. The polyelectrolytes acted as not only ionic complex agent in ionic state and but also dispersant after formation of Ag nano sol. The effective volume was controlled by combination of varying the molecular weight of polyelectrolytes and the size Ag nano sol. The particle size and the viscosity of nano sol were characterized by particle size analyzer, HR-TEM and cone & plate viscometer. It was found that the 10 nm and 40 nm-sized Ag nano sols were prepared by controlling the nucleation and growth steps, respectively. Finally, we could prepare highly concentrated Ag nano sol over 50 wt%.
