The most important advantage of nanoparticles is the increased thermal conductivity coefficient and convection heat transfer coefficient so that, as a result of using a 1.5% volume concentration of nanoparticles, the thermal conductivity coefficient would increase by about twice. In this paper, the effects of a nanofluid ($TiO_2$/water) on heat transfer characteristics such as the thermal conductivity coefficient, heat transfer coefficient, fuel clad, and fuel center temperatures in a VVER-1000 nuclear reactor are investigated. To this end, the cell equivalent of a fuel rod and its surrounding coolant fluid were obtained in the hexagonal fuel assembly of a VVER-1000 reactor. Then, a fuel rod was simulated in the hot channel using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation codes and thermohydraulic calculations (maximum fuel temperature, fluid outlet, Minimum Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio (MDNBR), etc.) were performed and compared with a VVER-1000 reactor without nanoparticles. One of the most important results of the analysis was that heat transfer and the thermal conductivity coefficient increased, and usage of the nanofluid reduced MDNBR.
During a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) in the pressurized water reactor (PWR), there is a possibility that high temperature and internal pressure of the fuel rods lead to ballooning of the cladding, which causes a partial blockage of flow area in a subchannel. Such flow blockage would influence the core coolant flow, thus affecting the core heat transfer during a reflooding phase and subsequent severe accident. However, most of the system analysis codes simulate the accident process based on the assumed channel blockage ratio, resulting in the fact that the simulation results are not consistent with the actual situation. This paper integrates the developed core Fuel Rod Thermal-Mechanical Behavior analysis (FRTMB) module into the self-developed severe accident analysis code ISAA. At the same time, the existing flow blockage model is improved to make it possible to simulate the change of flow distribution due to fuel rod deformation. Finally, the ISAA-FRTMB is used to simulate the QUENCH-LOCA-0 experiment to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the improved flow blockage model, and then the effect of clad ballooning on core heat transfer and subsequent parts of core degradation is analyzed.
The fretting wear of a nuclear fuel rod it a dangerous phenomenon. In this study, TiN coating was used to reduce the fretting wear of Zircaloy-4 tube, a nuclear fuel rod cladding material. TiN coating is probably one of the molt frequently and successfully used PVD coatings for the mitigation of fretting wear. The fretting tester was designed and manufactured for this experiment. The number of cycles, slip amplitude and normal load were selected as main factors of fretting wear. The results of this research showed that wear volume was improved 1.3∼3.2 times with TiN coating. The worn surfaces were observed by SEM. Wear mechanism at lower slip amplitude was the brittle cracks and rupture of TiN coating. However, adhesive and abrasive wear were mainly observed on most surfaces at higher slip amplitude.
An inspection of nuclear fuel rods should be performed at remoteness from risks of high level radioactivity, and accuracy is required. Currently, inspection of the nuclear fuel rods is operated to monitor the video that recording an original nuclear fuel rods at remoteness because of the risks of radioactivity. In this paper, it is an implementation of the system was carried out in the process according to the image processing inspection of the nuclear fuel rods. The nuclear fuel rods are configured to use a bundle of plurality, in the image processing technology to verify this, the edge detection method is useful. We suggest to DoG technique to add threshold for the nuclear fuel rod edge detections. This is the new technique that optimized DoG. It is to deal with DoG and threshold to dual process. In this way, after detecting an edge of the nuclear fuel rods, by running a nuclear fuel rod inspection algorithm to determine the status of nuclear fuel rods. We applied the system using the new algorithm, and confirmed an excellent characteristic. In this study, it is considered to be able to be carried out more easily and securely inspect of nuclear fuel rods.

In Lithuania, all spent nuclear fuel (SNF) resulted from the operation of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), which had two Russian Acronym for "Channelized Large Power Reactor"-type reactors. After the final shutdown, the total amount of SNF at the INPP was approximately 22,000 fuel assemblies. All these assemblies will be stored for about 50 years and disposed of after that. The decision to shut down and decommission both reactors in Lithuania before termination of design period raises a significant challenge for the treatment of accumulated SNF. Therefore, various techniques and technologies for SNF management were developed and justified for that specific case, and a set of special equipment was installed at the INPP, the effectiveness of which was demonstrated during its operation. This article presents unique techniques related to the management of SNF adopted and commissioned at the INPP after its operation shutdown, namely fuel rod cladding leak tightness control system and special equipment for collection of possible spillage during handling of SNF assembly in the hot cell. The operational experience and measurement results of fuel rod cladding leak tightness control system are presented.
A failed spent fuel rod with 53,000 MWd/tU from a nuclear power plant was characterized, and the fission products and oxygen layer in the pellet-clad mechanical interaction region were observed using an EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer). A sound fuel rod burned under similar conditions was used to compare and analyze, the results of the failed fuel rod. In the failed fuel rod, the oxide layer represented $10{\mu}m$ of the boundary of the cladding, and $35{\mu}m$ of the region outside the cladding. By comparison, in the sound fuel rod, the oxide layer was $8{\mu}m$, observed in the cladding boundary region. The cladding inner surface corrosion and the resulting fuel-cladding bonding were investigated using an EPMA. Zirconium existed in the bonding layer of the (U, Zr)O compound beyond the pellet cladding interaction gap of $20{\mu}m$, and composition of UZr2O3 was observed in the failed fuel rod. This paper presents the results of the EPMA examination of a spent fuel specimen, and a technique to analyze fission products in the pellet-clad mechanical interaction region.

During demonstrations of a process conditioning spent nuclear fuels, it may be necessary to transport and handle Spent fuel road cuts from Post Irradiation Examination facility to Slitting device in The hot cell. It may be not easy to transport spent fuel rod cuts because rod cuts are high radioactive materials. For this purpose, we have developed a capsule for transporting and handling high radioactive materials. We have analyzed conditions of a hot cell and requirements of the device, designed and manufactured The prototype of the device, and done some performance tests. From the tests, it has been shown that transportation and handling without scattering nuclear material was smooth but the weight of capsule was heavy. These result will be reflected to a design of the improved transportation and handling device which will be used during demonstrations.
There has been a deep interest in trying to find better-performing fuel clad motivated by the desire to decrease the likelihood of the reactor barrier failure like what happened in Fukushima in recent years. In this study, the effect of move towards accident tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding as the most attracting concept for improving reactor safety is investigated for SMART modular reactor. These reactors have less production cost, short construction time, better safety and higher power density. The SiC and FeCrAl materials are considered as the most potential candidate for ATF cladding, and the results are compared with Zircaloy cladding material from reactor physics point of view. In this paper, the calculations are performed by generating PMAX library by DRAGON lattice physics code to be used for further reactor core analysis by PARCS code. The differential and integral worth of control and safety rods, reactivity coefficient, power and temperature distributions, and boric acid concentration during the cycle are analyzed and compared from the conventional fuel cladding. The rod ejection accident (REA) is also performed to study how the power changed in response to presence of the ATF cladding in the reactor core. The key quantitative finding can be summarized as: 20 ℃ (3%) decrease in average fuel temperature, 33 pcm (3%) increase in integral rod worth and cycle length, 1.26 pcm/℃ (50%) and 1.05 pcm/℃ (16%) increase in reactivity coefficient of fuel and moderator, respectively.

The behaviour of the fission gas plays an important role in the fuel rod performance. In a previous work, we presented a physics-based model describing intra- and inter-granular behaviour of radioactive fission gas. The model was implemented in SCIANTIX, a mesoscale module for fission gas behaviour, and assessed against the CONTACT 1 irradiation experiment. In this work, we present the multi-scale coupling between the TRANSURANUS fuel performance code and SCIANTIX, used as mechanistic module for stable and radioactive fission gas behaviour. We exploit the coupled code version to reproduce two integral irradiation experiments involving standard fuel rod segments in steady-state operation (CONTACT 1) and during successive power transients (HATAC C2). The simulation results demonstrate the predictive capabilities of the code coupling and contribute to the integral validation of the models implemented in SCIANTIX.

Estimation for the vibration behavior of a nuclear fuel rod with its supporting structure called spacer grid has been made by the both of experimental and analytical methods in order to compare the supporting performance of two kinds of the spacer grids which have been newly developed. For the analytical method the fuel rod was modeled as a beam continuously supported by the springs of the spacer grid, and ABAQUS computer code was utilized. After a modal testing was performed for the fuel rod supported by five spacer grids, two results has been compared to justify and compensate the both methods. It has been found that the spring design of the spacer grid could give significant effect to natural frequency and vibration amplitude of the fuel rod.
