Chlorophyll content and the expression pattern of ERF transcription factor gene in leaves and roots of wild corn under flooding treatment

  • The origin of wild corn (teosinte) is distributed in the Northwest coastal pacific area of Central America, including Mexico, which is a wetland area of 5 to 6 months per year. Depending on these climate characteristics, wild corn is genetically resistant to flooding condition. In order to evaluate the availability of flooding resistant genes of these wild corns, we examined the physiological responses after the flooding treatment in the early stages of the growth of various wild corns. The difference of chlorophyll content between flooding untreatment and flooding treatments (untreated chlorophyll content - humidified chlorophyll content) was the highest in chlorophyll content in the case of B73, the common corn. In the middle leaf, $\underline{Zea}$ mays subsp. Parviglumis, Zea mays subsp. Mexicana, Zea mays subsp., Zea perennis decreased significantly. In the lower leaves, Zea mays sub and Zea nicaraguensis showed the lowest content compared to B73. PCR analysis was performed using 34 primers divided into two groups, top and bottom. In the wild corn, pyruvate decarboxylase 2 in root and alcohol dehydrogenase 1 in shoot showed the difference in the reaction.

역궤적 이동경로별 용인지역의 컬럼에어로졸 특성 (Columnar Aerosol Properties at Yongin According to Transport Paths of Back Trajectories)

  • Columnar aerosol properties retrieved from solar radiation were investigated at the Yongin (YGN) SKYNET site over seven years from October 2008 to October 2015. Hourly averages were calculated when the data were available, and back trajectories were calculated to examine the effects of regional transport. Data recovery rate was low at 6.6%, primarily because solar radiation was measured only under daytime clear-sky conditions. Mean values of the fine-mode volume fraction (FMVF) as well as its seasonal variation were similar to those of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ although the coarse-mode fraction of column aerosols tended to be slightly larger. The values of single scattering albedo (SSA) and FMVF were lower in spring due to the effects of mineral dust, and higher in summer due to secondarily-formed inorganic ions. Back trajectories were grouped into five clusters according to the directions of transport paths. Aerosol loading was highest for Cluster 2 from the northwest, but SSA and FMVF were not particularly high or low because aerosols were composed of various materials with different properties. Aerosol loading was lowest for Cluster 5 from the Pacific Ocean passing through the south end of Japan, whose SSA and FMVF were highest as secondarily-formed inorganic ions were mixed.

Ericaceous식물의 allelopathy와 경쟁력에 의한 침엽수 갱신 저해 (Competitive Ability and Allelopathy of Ericaceous Plants as Potential Causes of Conifer Regeneration Failures)

  • 온대 삼림지대에서 산화 적지나 개벌 적지에 왕성하게 번성하는 것이 ericaceous속이다. ericaceous속의 식물들은 성장이 빨라서 다른 종과의 경쟁에서 유리하고 또한 allelopathy 효과 때문에 침엽수 갱신에 영향을 미친다. Kalmia가 번성하는 지역에서는 삼림 갱신이 잘 되지 않거나 조림한 침엽수의 생장이 저조하였다. 이러한 생상 저해 현상은 서유럽의 Calluna - Sitca spruce - Scots pine 생태계와 미국의 북서 태평양 지역의 Gaultheria - cedar/hemlock 생태계에서도 나타나고 있다. 삼림이 파괴된 다음에 Kalmia - black spruce 생태계의 다양한 변화는 침엽수 생장을 저해하거나 갱신을 방해하는 원인으로 생각되어지고 있다. 양분경쟁에 대한 논쟁의 여지는 있으나 Kalmia는 black spruce 생장을 억제하는 주원인으로 작용한다. 여러 곳의 야외, 실내 및 온실에서 한 실험 결과는 이러한 결론을 뒷받침해 주고 있다. 본 논문에서는 Kalmia 잎으로부터 8가지의 폐놀물질을 분리동정해 냈으며 이들 중 4가지는 black spruce에 고도의 독성을 나타냈다. Kalmia 우점지역에서 allelopathic 영향을 적게 하므로써 black spruce의 갱신을 증진시키기 위한 여러 가지 방법에 대한 고찰을 하였다.

지진해일 범람이 해안도시에 미치는 영향에 대한 3차원 수리모형실험 (Three-Dimensional Laboratory Experiments for Tsunami Inundation in a Coastal City)

  • 본 연구에서 건물이 밀집되어 있는 해안도시에서의 지진해일 범람에 대한 평면수리모형실험을 수행하였다. 해안도시는 미국 서해안에 위치한 도시인 Seaside를 1/50으로 축소하여 평면수조에 설치하였다. 본 실험에서 범람지역에서의 지진해일의 파고 및 수평속도 측정하였는데, 31개 지점에서 계측하였으며 입사된 지진해일의 파고는 원형 스케일 10 m로 설정하였다. 범람양상과 속도는 건물의 위치 및 배열상태에 따라 크게 다르게 계측되었다. 또한, 도시의 주요 도로를 따라 계측된 지진해일 범람 파고 및 수평속도를 이용하여 모멘텀 플럭스(Momentum flux)를 계산하였다. 모멘텀 플럭스는 해안선에서부터 육지방향으로 파가 진행하면서 감소하는 일반적인 경향을 나타내었다. 범람파고와 모멘텀 플럭스는 도로가 형성된 구역에서 감쇄가 적게 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 수평 유속이 구조물에 미치는 외력에 중요한 영향을 준다는 것을 알게 되었다.

  • After several damages by PWSCC were found in the world, USNRC and PNNL(Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) started the research on PWSCC under the project name of PINC. The aim of the project was 1) to fabricate representative NDE mock-ups with flaws to simulate PWSCCs, 2) to identify and quantitatively assess NDE methods for accurately detecting, sizing and characterizing PWSCCs, 3) to document the range of locations and morphologies of PWSCCs and 4) to incorporate results with other results of ongoing PWSCC research programs, as appropriate. Korea nuclear industries have also been participating in the project. Thermally and mechanically cracked-four mockups were prepared and phased array and manual ultrasonic testing(UT) techniques were applied. The results and lessons learned from the preliminary RRT are summarized as follows: 1) Korea RRT teams performed the RRT successfully. 2) Crack detection probability of the participating organizations was an average 87%, 80% and 80% respectively. 3) RMS error of the crack sizing showed comparatively good results. 4) The lessons learned may be helpful to perform the PINC RRT and PSI /ISI in Korea in the future.

우리나라 수입(輸入) 침엽수재(針葉樹材) 시장구조(市場構造) 및 수종별(樹種別) 경쟁력(競爭力) (Structures and Competitiveness of Softwood Products in Korean Import Market)

  • Protection of tropical forest affects on significant reduce of tropical hardwood supply, and softwood resources will be increasingly important for the timber security in Korea. U.S. softwood log was most favorite species for Korean softwood log importers in overall import conditions except price stablization and consistency of export policy. Reduced export volume from Pacific Northwest to Korean market has been immediately replenished by rediata pine from New Zealand and Chilean plantation. Siberian timber will hardly play major roles in Korean timber market unless budding structure. softwood plywood and softwood furniture uses are enhanced. Recent rapid rise of labor cost and reducing tariff rrate in Korea provided better opportunities for import lumber in building materials market. Dry dimension lumber was relatively profitable when processed from import U.S. soft-wood log while green lumber was favorable products processed from radiata pine log in Korean lumber market. This means U.S. softwood lumber would have better opportunity to market for '2${\times}$'4 studs when wood frame housing is introduced. On the other hand while radiata pine is competitive on temporary construction lumber such as supporter and concrete forming frame in Korea. Shortage of raw material for the new capacity of board plants in Korea will be it bottle neck. Major log export countries to Korea as U.S. New Zealand and Chile showed high trade intensity indices of composite hoard produces for Korean market. As Korea efforts to diversify import sources, and tariffs are reduced to 8% as scheduled by 1994. countries of scoring higher comparative advantages as Portugal. Brazil, Austria as well as New Zealand will have better opportunity to penetrate into promised Korean composites hoard market.

History and Current Situation of River Management using Physical Habitat Models in the U.S. and Japan

  • History of Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) Following the large reservoir and water development era of the mid-twentieth century in North America, resource agencies became concerned over the loss of many miles of riverine fish and wildlife resources in the arid western United States. Consequently, several western states began issuing rules for protecting existing stream resources from future depletions caused by accelerated water development. Many assessment methods appeared during the 1960's and early 1970's. These techniques were based on hydrologic analysis of the water supply and hydraulic considerations of critical stream channel segments, coupled with empirical observations of habitat quality and an understanding of riverine fish ecology. Following enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1970, attention was shifted from minimum flows to the evaluation of alternative designs and operations of federally funded water projects. Methods capable of quantifying the effect of incremental changes in stream flow to evaluate a series of possible alternative development schemes were needed. This need led to the development of habitat versus discharge functions developed from life stage-specific relations for selected species, that is, fish passage, spawning, and rearing habitat versus flow for trout or salmon. During the late 1970's and early 1980's, an era of small hydropower development began. Hundreds of proposed hydropower sites in the Pacific Northwest and New England regions of the United States came under intensive examination by state and federal fishery management interests. During this transition period from evaluating large federal reservoirs to evaluating license applications for small hydropower, the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) was developed under the guidance of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

Geosat 고도계자료를 이용한 동아시아해역의 해면변위 산정법 (Computational Procedure for Sea Subface Topography of East Asian Marginal Seas using Geosat Altimeter Data)

  • 연근해에서의 위성고도계자료의 정확도가 향상됨에 따라 기존에 잘 알려진 Schwiderski 의 전구적 동수력학적 모형보다 더 정확한 조석모형으로 위성고도계자료에서의 조석성분에 대한 보정을 향상시킬 필요가 검증되었다. 초기단계로 오오츠크해, 남중국해와 북서태평양해성을 포함하는 동아시아해역에 대해 기존의 조석모형보다 해상도가 높은 $1/6^\circ$ 격자체계의 조석모형을 수립하여 반일적조$(M_2,\;S_2,\;N_2,\;K_2)$와 일적조$(K_1,\;O_1,\;P_1,\;Q_1)$에 대한 수치모형실험이 이루어졌다. 수립된 조석모형에서 산정된 조화상수들은 모형 영역의 Geosat 위성고도계자료로부터 해면변위를 산정할 때 조석성분을 제거하는데 이용되었다. 이러한 초기적인 갱정절차의 제시는 Schwiderski 의 조화상수로서는 적절히 처리될 수 없는 동아시아해역의 연해에 대해 해면변위를 산정하는데 광범위하게 이용될 수 있다.

Population Structure of Minke Whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in the Korean Waters Based upon Mitochondrial DNA Polymorphism

  • The Minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata, is the smallest baleen whale in the suborder Mysticeti. Because this species inhabits coastal areas, it became a main target species of coastal small-type whaling in the North Atlantic and the Northwest Pacific Oceans, and the species' population size dramatically decreased because of over-exploitation. As a result, the International Whaling Commission declared a global moratorium on whaling and launched the development of a management procedure for protecting the whales. Morphological studies, whaling history analysis, and genetic studies conducted mainly by Japanese scientists showed the existence of one unique "E" stock that inhabits the waters around the Korean peninsula and mixes with the "O" stock in the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk. We used the mitochondrial DNA control region polymorphism of 348 Minke whales bycaught or stranded in Korean waters from 30 October 1998 to 25 June 2005 to assess the whale population structure by year. The frequency of the 10 major haplotypes from the 40 identified haplotypes was not significantly different among groups, suggesting that a subpopulation was not present. A comparison of the genetic distances calculated with Tamura-Nei's method showed that the distances between groups were lower than those within groups, which suggests that there was no genetic difference in the Minke whale populations. The Fst comparison between groups and the phylogenetic tree constructed using the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) and Neighbor Joining (NJ) method also detected no obvious sub-stock structure.

한반도 2016년 폭염에 여름철 계절안진동이 미친 영향 (Influence of Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation on the 2016 Heat Wave over Korea)

  • Severe and long-lasting heat waves over Korea and many regions in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) during the 2016 summer, have been attributed to global warming and atmospheric teleconnection coupled with tropical convective activities. Yet, what controls subseasonsal time scale of heat wave has not been well addressed. Here we show a critical role of two dominant boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) modes, denominated as BSISO1 and BSISO2, on modulating temporal structure of heat waves in the midst of similar climate background. The 2016 summer was characterized by La Nina development following decay of strong 2015/2016 El Nino. The NH circumglobal teleconnection pattern (CGT) and associated high temperature anomalies and heat waves were largely driven by convective activity over northwest India and Pakistan during summer associated with La Nina development. However, the heat wave event in Korea from late July to late August was accompanied by the phase 7~8 of 30~60-day BSISO1 characterized by convective activity over the South China Sea and Western North Pacific and anticyclonic circulation (AC) anomaly over East Asia. Although the 2010 summer had very similar climate anomalies as the 2016 summer with La Nina development and CGT, short-lasting but frequent heat waves were occurred during August associated with the phase 1~2 of 10~30-day BSISO2 characterized by convective activity over the Philippine and South China Sea and AC anomaly over East Asia. This study has an implication on importance of BSISO for better understanding mechanism and temporal structure of heat waves in Korea.
