  • In this study, silkworms fed Cudrania tricuspidata leaves were powdered, and hydrolytic enzymes, including viscozyme, papain, and flavourzyme, were added to verify the functionality of the different mixtures. In the general component analysis, the C. tricuspidata silkworm (CS) group exhibited higher crude protein and ash content than did the other groups, and the enzyme-treated groups exhibited higher carbohydrate content than the CS group. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were significantly higher in the CS treated with viscozyme (CSV) and the CS treated with viscozyme/flavourzyme (CSVF) than in the other groups, with the CSV group showing the highest reducing power. ACE inhibitory activity was significantly higher in the CS treated with visocozyme/papain (CSVP) than in the CS group. In conclusion, rather than using powdered silkworms fed C. tricuspidata leaves, it would be more effective to use hydrolysates from C. tricuspidata silkworms as raw materials for functional foods.

  • Dasiraegi is a traditional funeral rite performance of Jindo located in the South Jeolla Province of South Korea. With its unique stylistic structure including various dances, songs and witty dialogues, and a storyline depicting the birth of a new life in the wake of death, embodying the Buddhism belief that life and death is interconnected; it attracted great interest from performance organizers and performers who were desperately seeking new contents that can be put on stage as a performance. It is needless to say previous research on Dasiraegi had been most valuable in its recreation as it analyzed the performance from a wide range of perspectives. Despite its contributions, the previous researches were mainly academic focusing on: the symbolic meanings of the performance, basic introduction to the components of the performance such as script, lyrics, witty dialogue, appearance (costume and make-up), stage properties, rhythm, dance and etc., lacking accurate representation of the most crucial element of the performance which is sori (song). For this reason, the study analyzes the music of Dasiraegi and presents its musical characteristics along with its scores to provide practical support for performers who are active in the field. Out of all the numbers in Dasiraegi, this study analyzed all of Geosa-nori and Sadang-nori, the funeral dirge (mourning chant) sung as the performers come on stage and Gasangjae-nori, because among the five proceedings of the funeral rite they were the most commonly performed. There are a plethora of performance recordings to choose from, however, this study chose Jindo Dasiraegi, an album released by E&E Media. The album offers high quality recordings of performances, but more importantly, it is easy to obtain and utilize for performers who want to learn the Dasiraegi based on the script provided in this study. The musical analysis discovered a number of interesting findings. Firstly, most of the songs in Dasiraegi use a typical Yukjabaegi-tori which applies the Mi scale frequently containing cut-off (breaking) sounds. Although, Southern Kyoung-tori which applies the Sol scale was used, it was only in limited parts and was musically incomplete. Secondly, there was no musical affinity between Ssitgim-gut and Dasiraegi albeit both are for funeral rites. The fundamental difference in character and function of Ssitgim-gut and Dasiraegi may be the reason behind this lack of affinity, as Ssitgim-gut is sung to guide the deceased to heaven by comforting him/her, whereas, Dasiaregi is sung to reinvigorate the lives of the living. Lastly, traces of musical grammar found in Pansori are present in the earlier part of Dasiraegi. This may be attributed to the master artist (Designee of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage), who was instrumental in the restoration and hand-down of Dasiaregi, and his experience in a Changgeuk company. The performer's experience with Changgeuk may have induced the alterations in Dasiraegi, causing it to deviate from its original form. On the other hand, it expanded the performative bais by enhancing the performance aspect of Dasiraegi allowing it to be utilized as contents for Performing Arts. It would be meaningful to see this study utilized to benefit future performance artists, taking Dasiraegi as their inspiration, which overcomes the loss of death and invigorates the vibrancy of life.

  • The researchers compiled two sets of digital terrain data released by NORI (National Oceanographic Research Institute, Korea) and NIMA (National Imagery and Mapping Agency, USA) respectively and analyzed a new set of $3"{\times}3"$ gridded terrain data in order to calculate terrain correction value in gravity in and around the Korean Peninsula. Using this new set of terrain data, the researchers developed an effective algorithm to calculate precise terrain correction value in gravity considering Earth's curvature and coded a fortran program to evaluate terrain correction value covering the surface of which the radius reaches up to 166.735 km. The researchers also calculated terrain correction value over the southern part of Korea. According to the statistics of terrain correction value calculated in and around the Korean Peninsula up to 166.735 km of surface radius, the maximum value soars to 56.508 mGal and the mean value is 4.539 mGal.

  • Pyropia, economic red algae species, have been cultivated in Korea (referred to as 'gim'), Japan ('nori'), and China ('zicai') for over 300 years. Vegetable seaweed Pyropia species are sold in the public markets in various forms as commercial seafoods. In Korea, two kinds of Pyropia seafood made with species of Pyropia and Ulva (sea lettuce, referred to as 'parae') are also sold. These are referred to as 'parae-gim' (with Pyropia spp. and U. linza) and 'gamtaegim' (with Pyropia spp. and U. prolifera). There is currently no method for identifying the seaweed species that comprise Pyropia seafood products. Therefore, we developed novel molecular markers to identify Ulva species in commercial Pyropia seafoods. Based on rbcL molecular markers, we identified informative characteristics to discriminate U. linza and U. prolifera as seafood ingredients. Moreover, PCR with 3'-end mismatch primers successfully isolated the specific rbcL sequences of U. linza and U. prolifera from Pyropia seafoods. Therefore, our novel molecular markers will be useful for identifying the ingredient species of commercial seafoods.

  • Introduction: Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL) can be divided into germinal centre (GC-DLBCL) and post germinal centre (post GC-DLBCL) groups by applying immunohistochemical antibodies. As these subgroups respond differently to chemotherapy, it is possible at diagnosis to select a poor prognostic subgroup for aggressive treatment. Objective: To determine the frequencies of GC-DLBCL and post GC-DLBCL in patients by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and the clinical response after six cycles of chemotherapy. Subjects and Methods: In this descriptive study conducted in AFIP and CMH, Rawalpindi and NORI, Islamabad, from September 2010 to September 2011, a total of 75 pretreatment cases of DLBCL diagnosed during the study period were included. Cases were segregated in to GC-DLBCL and post GC-DLBCL groups according to results of immunohistochemistry markers CD10, BCL6 and MUM1. Immediate clinical response was assessed after 6 cycles of chemotherapy. Response was divided into complete response, partial response, stable disease or relapse or progression. Results: The mean age was $54.2{\pm}15$. Males were 53 (70.7%). Forty (53.3%) cases comprised the GC-DLBCL group; 25(62.5%) of them showed a complete response. Most patients of the post GC-DLBCL 19(54%) showed relapse/progression. Results of immediate clinical response in both prognostic subgroups were significant (p<0.05). Results regarding positivity with immunohistochemical antibodies CD10 (p 0.011), BCL6 (p 0.013) and MUM1 (p 0.000) regarding immediate clinical response were also significant. Conclusion: GC-DLBCL group shows better response to CHOP chemotherapy regimen. Immunohistochemistry should be used to further classify DLBCL as this can enable us to select aggressive group for aggressive treatment. This manuscript is important because the study is the first to becarried out exclusively in Pakistan or our part of the world.

  • Recently, high performance machining center requires special type of sealing mechanism that prevent a leakage of oil jet or oil mist lubrication system. Sealing of oil-air mixture plays important r oles to have an enhanced lubrication for performance machining center. Current work emphasizes on investigations of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve sealing capabilities of conventional labyrinth seals, air jet is injected against the leakage flow. In this study, an adapted model is introduced to improve sealing capability of conventional non-contact type seals. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. Both of a numerical analysis by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. The sealing effects of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude aic studied in various parameters. Gas or liquid has been used as a working fluid for most of nori-contact types seals including the labyrinth seal. However, it is more reasonable to regard two-phase flows because oil mist or oil jet are used for high performance spindle's lubrication. In this study, working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil and air phase. Both of turbulence and compressible flow model are also introduced in a CFD analysis to represent an isentropic process. Estimation of non-leaking property is determined by amount of pressure drop in the leakage path. Results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effect of the sealing improvement is explained as decreasing of leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger

  • This study applied the previous results of the NAO model, a tidal correction model, to the open boundary condition for the behavior of tidal elevation and tidal currents in the South Sea. This study used the EFDC model considering the wetting and drying problem and using the $\sigma-coordinate$ as a vertical coordinate and generated two mesh cases of the constant grid size of 2.0 km and the variable grid size of $0.5\sim2.0km$. The numerical results for the tides showed that the predicted results were in quite good agreements with the observational data acquired from the tidal stations of the NORI. The predicted tides were observed to propagate from the east area to the west area in the South Sea. The verification results reveal that the numerical results are more correlated with the measured tidal data as the grid size decreases. The grid size of 2 km results in proper simulation of tidal currents in wide waterway and offshore area whereas the numerical results from the grid size of 0.5 km tend to somewhat underestimate the tidal currents affected by narrow waterway and topography in inner-bay.

  • Gridded bathymetric data of 30 seconds apart in Korea marginal seas $(30^{\circ}N{\sim}44^{\circ}N,\;117^{\circ}E{\sim}143^{\circ}E)$ are produced. In order to make the data, both updated gridded data of 1 minute apart on internet sites and all the digital nautical charts issued by National Oceanographic Research Institute (NORI) in Oct. 2007 are used. The reference level of the gridded data is approximate level of lowest low water and the horizontal coordinates are based on the WGS84 ellipsoid. Especially a developed computer program can collect all the sounding data including depth contour directly from the digital charts and UTM coordinates of the data are converted to the WGS84 coordinates from which accuracy of data is significantly improved. An interpolation method is adopted to produce the gridded data which are compared and analyzed against the existing gridded data. In this gridded data we can see significantly detailed topographic features which could not be found in the previous data.
