  • This paper performed a comprehensive evaluation of the results of the 2007 Ground Response Analysis Round Robin Test, at which 14 institutions and individuals participated. The submitted results showed significant discrepancies. The main reason for this difference has been attributed to the dispersion in the estimated shear wave velocity profiles and dynamic soil curves. It is therefore concluded that accurate evaluation of the material properties is of primary importance for reliable estimation of the ground vibration. Evaluation of the effect of the analysis method showed that the equivalent linear analysis overestimates the peak ground acceleration, but overall the results are similar to a total stress nonlinear analysis. However, the total and effective stress nonlinear analyses show distinct discrepancies, the effective stress analyses consistently resulting in a lower response due to the development of the excess pore water pressure and thus softer response.

  • This paper proposes an autolanding guidance and control algorithm with the lateral guidance law. This algorithm is basically formulated and designed in feedback linearization based on singular perturbation. Main features of this algorithm are two facts. One of those is that when a certain situation happens that airplane must realign to the runway suddenly assigned due to unexpected environment change around the landing site, the heading guidance in this algorithm is very valuable, and the other is the fact that the inner loop control of this algorithm is able to be designed directly based on the Handling Quality Requirements that most flight control systems must be satisfied with. To illustrate the potential of this algorithm, 6-DOF nonlinear simulation based on the nonlinear airplane model shown in Ref.[11] is carried out. The simulation results showed that the altitude response to the given landing trajectory is accurate, and the airplane heading alignment to the assigned runway from the lateral deviation is successful. It is noted that this algorithm is also applicable to unmanned aerial vehicle, which can be retrieved in autolanding technique, where the runway far retrieving the vehicle is in any direction for example at war field.

  • The presented paper considers infill masonry walls' influence on the seismic reliability of precast concrete frames. The recent Bojnord earthquake on May 13th, 2017 in Iran (MW 5.4) illustrated that the infill masonry walls play a crucial role in the damage extent and life safety issues of inhabitants in the precast concrete buildings. The incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) approach was used to determine the fragility curves of the represented damaged precast frame. Then, by integrating site hazard and structural fragilities, the seismic reliability of the represented precast frame was evaluated in different damage limit states. Additionally, the static pushover analysis (SPA) approach was used to assess the seismic performance assessment of the precast frame. Bare and infilled frames were modeled as 2D frames employing the OpenSees software platform. The multi-strut macro-model method was employed for infill masonry simulation. Also, a relatively efficient and straightforward nonlinear model was used to simulate the nonlinear behavior of the precast beam-column joint. The outputs show that consideration of the masonry infilled wall effect in all spans of the structural frame leads to a decrease in the possibility of exceedance of specified damage limit states in the structures. In addition, variation of hazard curves for buildings with and without consideration of infilled walls leads to a decrease in the reliability of the building's frames with masonry infilled walls. Furthermore, the lack of infill walls in the first story significantly affects the precast concrete frame's seismic reliability and performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural performance of DH beams. DH beam construction method uses thin steel plates as form-works and structural elements. The prefabricated plates and rebars of DH beams were transported to a construction site and erected for casting concrete at the site. In this study, the contribution of steel plates to the flexural strength was evaluated since the plates were expected to play a role as reinforcements. Five test specimens were made for experimental and analytical studies. They consisted of two DH beams for the positive moment test and two DH beams for the negative moment test and a RC beam for the comparison purpose. Test results on DH beams were compared with design equations and the RC beam test result. It was proven that DH beams demonstrated the good flexural behavior showing sufficient strengths and deformation capacities. Flexural strengths, principal strains of concrete, and rebar stresses were evaluated through nonlinear finite element analyses for two test beams. The analyses also showed that steel plates can contribute to the enhancement of flexural strength of DH beams. Based on experimental and analytical studies, it was concluded that steel plates of DH beams can be used as good flexural reinforcements.

  • Seismic response of single degree of freedom system supported by shallow foundation was analyzed by using nonlinear explicit finite difference element code. Numerical analysis results were verified with dynamic centrifuge test results of the same soil profile and structural dimensions with the numerical analysis model at a centrifugal acceleration of 20 g. Differences between the analysis and the test results induced by the boundary conditions of control points can be reduced by adding additional local damping to the natural born cyclic hysteretic damping of the soil strata. The analysis results show good agreement with the test results in terms of both time histories and response spectra. Thus, it can be concluded that the nonlinear explicit finite difference element code will be a useful technique for estimating seismic residual displacement, earthpressure etc. which are difficult to measure during laboratory tests and real earthquake.

  • The possibility of earthquakes in vulnerable regions indicates that efficient technique is required for seismic protection of buildings. During the recent decades, the concept is moving towards the insertion of base isolation on seismic prone buildings. So, investigation of structural behavior is a burning topic for buildings to be isolated in base level by bearing device. This study deals with the incorporation of base isolation system and focuses the changes of structural responses for different types of Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) isolators. A number of sixteen model buildings have been simulated selecting twelve types of bearing systems as well as conventional fixed-base (FB) scheme. The superstructures of the high-rise buildings are represented by finite element assemblage adopting multi-degree of freedoms. Static and dynamic analyses are carried out for FB and base isolated (BI) buildings. The dynamic analysis in finite element package has been performed by the nonlinear time history analysis (THA) based on the site-specific seismic excitation and compared employing eminent earthquakes. The influence of the model type and the alteration in superstructure behavior of the isolated buildings have been duly assessed. The results of the 3D multistory structures show that the lateral forces, displacement, inertia and story accelerations of the superstructure of the seismic prone buildings are significantly reduced due to bearing insertion. The nonlinear dynamic analysis shows 12 to 40% lessening in base shear when LRB is incorporated leading to substantial allowance of horizontal displacement. It is revealed that the LRB isolators might be potential options to diminish the respective floor accelerations, inertia, displacements and base shear whatever the condition coincides. The isolators with lower force intercept but higher isolation period is found to be better for decreasing base shear, floor acceleration and inertia force leading to reduction of structural and non-structural damage. However, LRB with lower isolator period seems to be more effective in dropping displacement at bearing interface aimed at reducing horizontal shift of building structure.

  • This study presents the seismic risk assesment for an extradosed bridge with seismic isolators of lead rubber bearings(LRB). First, the seismic vulnerability of a structure and then the seismic hazard of the site are evaluated using earthquake data set and seismic hazard map in Korea, and then the seismic risk of the structure is assessed. The nonlinear seismic analyses are carried out to consider plastic hinges of bridge columns and nonlinear characteristics of soil foundation. The ductility demand is adopted to describe the nonlinear behavior of a column, and the moment-curvature curve of a column is assumed to be bilinear hysterestic. The fragility curves are represented as a log-normal distribution function for column damage, movement of superstructure, and cable yielding. And seismic hazard is estimated using the available seismic hazard maps. The results show that the effectiveness of the seismic isolators for the columns is more noticeable than those for cables and girders, in seismic isolated extradosed bridges under earthquakes.

  • Considering fluid-structure-soil interactions, a finite-element model for a liquid-storage tank is presented and the nonlinear earthquake response analysis is formulated. The tank structure is modeled considering shell elements with geometric and material nonlinearities. The fluid is represented by acoustic elements and combined with the structure using interface elements. To consider the soil-structure interactions, the near- and far-field regions of soil are modeled with solid elements and perfectly matched discrete layers, respectively. This approach is applied to the seismic fragility analysis of a 200,000 kL liquid-storage tank. The fragility curve is observed to be influenced by the amplification and filtering of rock outcrop motions at the site when the soil-structure interactions are considered.

  • To cover a range of possible site conditions where the Korean standard nuclear power plant may be constructed, a range of generic site conditions is selected for geologic and seismologic evaluation. To envelop other Asian countries as well as the Korean peninsula, there is an attempt to increase the seismic level to 0.3g ground motions for the safe shutdown earthquake. The dynamic analyses of the reactor vessel internals and fuel assemblies are performed for the increased motions and the effect of seismic level on the response is investigated. Also the nonlinear response characteristics are discussed by comparing the loads between operating basis earthquake and safe shutdown earthquake excitations. The design adequacy of the reactor vessel internals and fuel assemblies for the increased seismic level is addressed.
