We conducted simple experiments to consider the influence of nonlinear groundwater flow on Trichloroethylene (TCE) as Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL) migration in a rough walled single fracture. A glass replica of a granite sample containing a rough single fracture was made and experiments were conducted over a range of Re. Observations are compared to the results of TCE migration tests that were conducted in two parallel glass plates over the same range of Re. Results show nonlinear groundwater flow in a single fracture affect TCE migration path and residual saturation of TCE.
It is important to extract and assess low-flow recession characteristics for water resources management in the upper reaches of a stream. It is difficult to express the groundwater flow recession characteristics for streamflow synthetically. The linear recession model has been widely used by baseflow recession analysis for reason of simplicity and convenience, but recent studies show that nonlinear recession models fit well, and the relationship between the reservoir storage of shallow unconfined aquifers and the groundwater discharge was to be identified as nonlinear in the literature based on the analysis of numerous streamflow recession curves. The objective of the study is to decode these nonlinear characteristics, including evaporation loss, storage, and recharge of groundwater using streamflow. By analyzing the observed time series of streamflow from the study area, which is the Pyeongchang River basin in Korea, the main components of the underlying groundwater balance, namely, discharge, evaporation loss, storage, and recharge, can be identified and quantified. As a result of the study, depletion of groundwater by evapotranspiration losses through the water uptake of tree roots was found to bias the recession curves and the estimated reservoir parameters. The seasonality of both rainfall and potential evaporation, analysis of the recession curves, stratified according to time of the year, allowed the quantification of evapotranspiration loss as a function of a calendar month and stored groundwater storage.

Unsteady groundwater flow in a three-layer unconfined aquifer has been studied theoretically and experimentally. Two different methods have been used in solving the governing equations of the flow, the nonlinear partial differential equations; (1) The governing equations are linearized for each layer and approximate solutions are obtained. (2) The governing equations are transformed to nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are solved numerically by Runge-Kutta procedure. Fine, middle sized and coarse sands are used in the experiments. It is found that the solutions from the method(2) ( the reduction of partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations) give better agreement with the experimental results than the solution from the method(1).

In this research, unsteady groundwater flow in unconfined and homogeneous three layer aquifers is studied theoretically and experimentally. Numerical solutions are obtained by Runge Kutta and Runge Kutta Gill method after transforming the governing nonlinear partial differential equations to nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Experimental apparatus includes a test section filled with fine, medium and coarse sands. Experimental results are compared with the numerical solutions and both experimental and numerical results correspond well with each other. This numerical approach may be also applied to the cases which have more aquifers.
Unsaturated/saturated groundwater flow and solute transport model, VSFRT2D(Variable Saturated Flow and Reactive Transport model) was developed considering effects of pumping, irrigation, and denitrification. VSFRT2D employed Richards equation as governing equation for groundwater flow and previously existing unsaturated models modified by including computational procedure of evapotranspiration at surface using Thornthwaite method when precipitation doesn't occur. Bioremediation processes based on monod kinetics are described using four nonlinear contaminant transport equations and three nonlinear microbes transport equations. The developed model was applied to field data in Hongsung area contaminated with nitrate. In order to identify the effect of precipitation, pumping, evapotranspiration, irrigation, fertilizer application, and various bioremediations on groundwater flow and contaminant transport, individual processes were separated and simulated. Then all results obtained from the individual processes are compared with each other. The simulation results show that bioremediation had a negligible effect on nitrate concentration change. However, pumping for irrigation, precipitation, and nitrogen fertilizer application showed profound influences on nitrate concentration change.

An analytical solution of groundwater flow is applied to design soil vacuum extraction for removing volatile organic compounds from the unsaturation zone. The governing equation of gas or vapor flow in porous media is nonlinear in that gas density depends on gas pressure. A linear equation suggested by researcher is similar to that of groundwater flow. The pressure drawdowns of confined and leaky aqufiers are calculated using Massmann's field data, and the pressure drawdowns are compared. A solution of Theis equation calculated by Massmann is modified using GASSOLVE9 program in this paper. The pressure drawdown using Hantush's analytical solution for leaky aquifer also compared to that of Massmann. Hantush's analytical solution gives good approximations to pressure drawdown.
Groundwater flow in a two-layer aquifer is studied theoretically and experimentally. Nonlinear differential equations are independently linearized for the upper and the lower layer, and approximate solutions are obtained. Fine sands and coarse sands are used in experiments. For steady flow, theoretical solutions agrees excellently with experimental results For unsteady flow, however, agreement is not so good, because the experimental conditions do not match with theoretical assumptions.
To investigate the flow characteristics by the water stage variation between stream-aquifer, the new solution of nonlinear Boussinesq equation was derived and extended using the Boltzmann transformation. The soundness of the analytic solution obtained from this study was examined by the comparison with the linearized analytic solution and the numerical solution by finite difference method. And the movement, velocity, flowrate and volume of flow caused by the stage variation of stream and the existence of regional gradient were estimated. This new analytic solution can express the groundwater movement between stream-aquifer. So, it might be helpful to manage water environment.

The inflow rate is of interest in the design of underground structures such as tunnels and buried pipes below the groundwater table. Soil permeability governing the inflow rate significantly affects the hydro-geological behavior of soils but is difficult to estimate due to its wide range of distribution, nonlinearity and anisotropy. Volume changes induced by stress can cause nonlinear stress-strain behavior, resulting in corresponding permeability changes. In this paper, the nonlinearity and anisotropy of permeability are investigated by conducting Rowe cell tests, and a nonlinear permeability model considering anisotropy was proposed. Model modification and parameter evaluation for field application were also addressed. Significance of nonlinear permeability was illustrated by carrying out numerical analysis of a tunnel. It is highlighted that the effect of nonlinear permeability is significant in soils of which volume change is considerable, and particularly appears in the short-term flow behavior.
An integrated model is presented to describe underground flow and mass transport, using a multicomponent multiphase approach. The comprehensive governing equation is derived considering mass and force balances of chemical species over four phases(water, oil, air, and soil) in a schematic elementary volume. Compact and systemati notations of relevant variables and equations are introduced to facilitate the inclusion of complex migration and transformation processes, and variable spatial dimensions. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by a multidimensional finite element code. The developed code with dynamic array allocation, is sufficiently flexible to work across a wide spectrum of computers, including an IBM ES 9000/900 vector facility, SP2 cluster machine, Unix workstations and PCs, for one-, two and three-dimensional problems. To reduce the computation time and storage requirements, the system equations are decoupled and solved using a banded global matrix solver, with the vector and parallel processing on the IBM 9000. To avoide the numerical oscillations of the nonlinear problems in the case of convective dominant transport, the techniques of upstream weighting, mass lumping, and elementary-wise parameter evaluation are applied. The instability and convergence criteria of the nonlinear problems are studied for the one-dimensional analogue of FEM and FDM. Modeling capacity is presented in the simulation of three dimensional composite multiphase TCE migration. Comprehesive simulation feature of the code is presented in a companion paper of this issue for the specific groundwater or flow and contamination problems.
