  • This paper characterizes typical nonlinear loads into two types of harmonic sources, i.e., harmonic voltage source and harmonic current source. A series resonant filter is very effective in harmonic reduction for harmonic voltage source type of nonlinear loads such as personal computer loads with smoothing dc capacitors. A parallel resonant filter is suited for current source type of nonlinear loads such as ac drives with smoothing dc reactors. General compensation characteristics and comparison of series and parallel resonant filters are given analytically and experimentally. Compliance with IEC Std 1000-3-2 has been evaluated for limiting harmonic distortion.

  • In order to overcome the disadvantages of linear filters in certain cases of practical interest, a class of nonlinear filters(rank filters) are constructed based on a class of robust estimates, the rank estimates. A subclass of these filters, the limited-degree extended-averaging Wilcoxon filters, is then described as an interesting example of the rank filters with desirable characteristics. The properties of these filters are discussed and the performance of these filters are analyzed for ideal edges and narrow pulses.

  • this thesis proposes a new echo canceller that can be used in a fulll-duplex digital subscriber loopmodem. The modem suffers from nonlinear distortion such as transmitted pulse asymmetry, saturation in transformers, and nonlinearity of data converters. The proposed nonlinear echo canceller can compensate the nolinear distortion by using a nonlinear digital filter based on canonical pieceewise-linear (CPWL) function. Numerical results based on computer simulation are given in this paper. It is shown that the convergence characteristics depend on the initial values of weights of linear filters with absoluters and that the nonlinearity in digital-to-analog(D/A) converter can be compensated by a relatively small number linear filters with absoluters. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence rate in comparison with Voterra algorithm.

  • This paper presents the optimal design method of SAW filters with arbitrary frequency characteristics. The design program using the unconstrained nonlinear optimization method and FFT algorithm is developed for optimal design of SAW filters with arbitrary frequency characteristics. As a design example, a SAW TV IF filter with asymmetric-amplitude and nonlinear-phase frequency characteristics is designed.

  • The objective of this paper is to survey and put in perspective the existing methods of dynamic filter development. This includes theories and practices for linear and nonlinear filters, multiple model filters, and data association methods for tracking in multitarget environment. The presentation of this paper is motivated by recent surge of interest in the area of designing feedback control systems with reduced number of sensors, detection and identification of abrupt changes, and multitarget tracking in clutter. It is hoped to be useful in view of the need to take a grasp of existing techniques before using them in practice and developing new techniques.

  • This paper proposes a feedback linearization control scheme of AC/DC PWM converters with LCL input filters using no damping resisters. Feedback linearization techniques use a transformation from nonlinear system models into equivalent linear models in a simpler form. The feedback linearization scheme in this work has cascade structures unlike usual feedback linearization, therefore it has an advantage that it is possible to limit the capacitor current to a certain level. The performance of the proposed controller is validated with simulation and experimental results.

  • The SA filters have a very flexible structure by limiting the maximum subwindow size. This flexible structure presents an effective trade-off between the complexity and performance of the filters. In this paper, experimental results showing the performance variation according to the change of filter order and subfilter type(such as max, min, exclusive-OR, mod) are presented. We designed optimal SA filters minimizing MSE for the various noise conditions. These results show several new properties of SA filters.

  • This paper derives a sufficient condition on the stability of recursive third-order Volterra filters based on their filter coefficients. A Volterra filter is very effective in modeling nonlinear systems with memory. However, it is well-known that the nonrecursive Volterra filter requires a large number of filter coefficients to describe a nonlinear system. For this reason, recursive Volterra filters are usually considered because the recursive implementation requires a smaller number of coefficients compared to the nonrecursive one. Unfortunately, the main problem of the recursive Volterra filters is their inherent instablility. In this paper. we present a simple condition for the output of a recursive discrete-time third-order Volterra filter to be bounded whenever the input signal to the recursive Volterra filter is bounded by a finite constant.

  • The fictitious power theory in time domain is very easy to understand, but power analyzing time of active power is increased, because power is analyzed using signal techniques based on the correlation between voltage and current waveforms. Also, conventional methods in time/frequency domain to evaluate the compensation performance of active power filters are not provided easy solutions. So, the authors have previously proposed 3-D current coordinates which is composed into active component, fundamental reactive component and distorted component of nonlinear loads current. This method has excellent performance, but can not evaluate the characteristics of nonlinear load current whether inductive or capacitive. Therefore, To overcome problems mentioned previously, this paper deals with the simple instantaneous power theory and the modified 3-D current coordinates for evaluating the compensation performance of active power filters. To confirm the validity, active power filters simulator is developed using C-language. From the simulation, results are discussed their utility.

  • The characteristics of $S\breve{o}lc$ filters in $X^{(2)}$ nonlinear photonic crystals, periodically poled lithium niobate ($LiNbO_3$), were investigated by the Jones matrix method. The transmittance increases and the full width half maximum of the filter becomes narrow as the duty ratio increases. However, the filtering wavelength does not change. The transmittance at the filtering wavelength is over 95% when the duty ratio is larger than 0.35.
