  • The dynamic analysis of a plate with non-linearity due to large deformation was investigated in this study. There have been many theoretical and numerical analyses of the non-linear dynamic behavior of plates examining theoretically or numerically. The problem is how correctly an analytical model can represent the dynamic characteristics of the actual system. To address the issue, the continuous-time system identification technique was used to generate non-linear models, for stiffness and damping terms, and to explain the observed behaviors with single mode assumption after comparing experimental results with the numerical results of a linear plate model.

  • For a large deformation nonlinear dynamic analysis of two-dimensional frictional contact, the linear complementarity formulation combined with a linearization is used. The solution procedure is based on the total Lagrangian formulation with a predictor and corrector scheme. For contact searching, a hierarchical scheme with a circular territory is used. A second-order approximation of displacements is used to detect impact time and position. The formulation is illustrated by means of numerical examples.

  • In this paper a systematic numerical analysis is performed to obtain the energy dissipation and re-centering capacities of diagonal steel braced frames subjected to cyclic loading. This diagonal steel bracing systems are fabricated with super-elastic SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) braces in order to develop a recentering seismic resistance system without residual deformation. The three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are constructed to investigate the horizontal stiffness, drifts and failure modes of the re-centering bracing systems.

  • Based on third-order shear deformation shell theory, the present paper investigates post-buckling properties of eccentrically stiffened metal foam curved shells/panels having initial geometric imperfectness. Metal foam is considered as porous material with uniform and non-uniform models. The single-curve porous shell is subjected to in-plane compressive loads leading to post-critical stability in nonlinear regime. Via an analytical trend and employing Airy stress function, the nonlinear governing equations have been solved for calculating the post-buckling loads of stiffened geometrically imperfect metal foam curved shell. New findings display the emphasis of porosity distributions, geometrical imperfectness, foundation factors, stiffeners and geometrical parameters on post-buckling properties of porous curved shells/panels.

  • The Capacity Spectrum Method (CSM) was first introduced in the 1970's as rapid evaluation procedure. The procedure compares the capacity of the structure (in the form of a pushover curve) with the demands on the structure (in the form of a response spectrum). The graphical intersection of the two curves approximates the response of the structure. In order to account for nonlinear inelastic behavior of the structural system, effective ductility ratios(μ) are applied to the elastic-linear response spectrum to imitate an inelastic response spectrum. CSM in ATC-40 has deficiencies such as performance point does not converge and the peak deformation of inelastic systems is to be inaccurate when compared against results of nonlinear response history analysis. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the variation of performance points of Capacity Spectrum Method (CSM) are investigated with respect to the different sets of earthquake ground motions. The earthquake sets were used in this study selected by Miranda(1993), Riddell(1991), Seed et al. (1976).

  • Genetic Algorithm(GA), which is based on the theory of natural evolution, has been evaluated highly for their robust performances. The optimization problems on truss structures under the prescribed displacement are solved by using GA. In this paper, the homologous deformation of structures was proposed as the prescribed displacement. The shape analysis of structures is a kind of inverse problems different from stress analysis, and the governing equation becomes nonlinear. In this regard, GA was used to solve the nonlinear equation. In this study, the shape analysis method in which not only the positions of the objective nodes but also the layout and sectional area of the member are encoded to strings in the GA as design parameters of the structures is proposed.

  • A numerical method for evaluating the equilibrium path of cylindrical shell subject to axial load and eccentrically axial load is presented. The effects of both material and geometric nonlinearities were also considered in the analysis. The nonlinear formulation was based on the total Lagrangian description and nonlinear equtions were solved by the Newton-Raphson method with load increment procedures. Degenerate shell elements with layered approach were employed for the analysis. The elasto-plastic deformation can be found in several examples and a large eccentricity of the axial load reduces the stress level at the time of the local buckling of the pipe considerably.

  • In this study, the impact analysis for the steel fender system that designed for protection of collision between vessel and bridge was peformed. The size of objective collision vessel assumed as 3000 dead weight tonnage(DWT). The impact forces and the impact energies were estimated by formulas of several design codes, and the steel fender system was designed based on the estimated forces and energy. The bow of objective vessel was modeled as rigid body, and bridge substructure was modeled as fixed support. Since, the impact analysis have the dynamic nonlinear features, such as, material nonlinear, large deformation and contact, explicit structural analysis program was used. The analysis results presented that the impact forces formulas in codes have the sufficient conservativeness.

  • In this study, the unseating failure of the bridge spans under seismic excitations is examined by investigation the nonlinear response behaviors of the bridge system with reinforced concrete piers. To reduce the computational effort and to consider the effect of the foundation motions, a simplified 3 degree-of-freedom model is proposed, which retains the dynamic characteristics of the original bridge motions in concern. To imply the nonlinear behaviors of the RC piers to the system. a hysteresis model is utilized from the calculated force-deformation curve for the piers. The statistical characteristics of the maximum response displacements are obtained from the simulation results of 1000 time history analysis.

  • Concrete shear walls are one of the major structural lateral resisting systems in buildings. In some cases, due to the change in the occupancy of the structure or functional requirements like architectural and even mechanical ones, openings need to be provided and installed in structural walls after their construction. Providing these openings may significantly influence the structural behavior of the constructed wall. This paper considers the results of a nonlinear finite element analysis of shear walls with opening strengthened by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips with different configurations. Details of bond-slip constitutive model of link elements to simulate the connections of FRP strips to concrete surface is presented. The proposed model in this research has been validated using experimental results available in the literature. The results indicated that the proposed configuration of CFRP strips significantly improved the lateral resistance and deformation capacity of the shear walls with opening.
