Vibrations of a taut horizontal cable subjected to axial support excitations considering nonlinear quasi-static responses

  • To calculate the vibrations of a tout cable subjected to axial support excitations, a nonlinear relationship of cable force and the support displacement under static situations are employed to depict the quasi-static vibration of the cable. The dynamic components of quasi-static vibration are inputted as "direct loads" to cause the parametric vibrations on the cable. Both the governing equations of motion and deformation compatibility for parametric vibrations are then derived, which indicates the high coupling of cable parametric force and deformation. Numerical solutions, based on the finite difference method, are put forward for the parametric vibrations, which is validated by the finite element method under periodic axial support excitations. For the quasi-static response, the shorter cables are more sensitive to support excitations than longer ones at small cable force. The quasi-static cable force makes the greatest contribution to the total cable force, but the parametric cable force is responsible for the occurrence of cable loosening at large excitation amplitudes. Moreover, this study also revealed that the traditional approach, assuming a linear relationship between quasi-static cable force and axial support displacement, would result in some great error of the cable parametric responses.

  • The energy dissipation of inverted V-type eccentric steel braced frames can be achieved through the yielding of a slit link, through yielding of a number of strips between slits when the frame is subjected to inelastic cyclic deformation. On the other hand, the development of seismic resistance system without residual deformation is obtained by applying the superelasdtic shape memory alloy (SMA) material into the brace and link elements. This paper presents results from a systematic three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis on the structural behavior of the eccentric bracing systems subjected to cyclic loadings. A wide scope of structural behaviors explains the horizontal stiffness, hysteretic behaviors, and failure modes of the recentering eccentric bracing system. The accurate results presented here serve as benchmark data for comparison with results obtained using modern experimental testing and alternative theoretical approaches.

Nonlinear thermal post-buckling behavior of graphene platelets reinforced metal foams conical shells

  • Conical shell is a common engineering structure, which is widely used in machinery, civil and construction fields. Most of them are usually exposed to external environments, temperature is an important factor affecting its performance. If the external temperature is too high, the deformation of the conical shell will occur, leading to a decrease in stability. Therefore, studying the thermal-post buckling behavior of conical shells is of great significance. This article takes graphene platelets reinforced metal foams (GPLRMF) conical shells as the research object, and uses high-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) to study the thermal post-buckling behaviors. Based on general variational principle, the governing equation of a GPLRMF conical shell is deduced, and discretized and solved by Galerkin method to obtain the critical buckling temperature and thermal post-buckling response of conical shells under various influencing factors. Finally, the effects of cone angles, GPLs distribution types, GPLs mass fraction, porosity distribution types and porosity coefficient on the thermal post-buckling behaviors of conical shells are analyzed in detail. The results show that the cone angle has a significant impact on the nonlinear thermal stability of the conical shells.

Nonlinear free and forced vibrations of oblique stiffened porous FG shallow shells embedded in a nonlinear elastic foundation

  • The present research delves into the analysis of nonlinear free and forced vibrations of porous functionally graded (FG) shallow shells reinforced with oblique stiffeners, which are embedded in a nonlinear elastic foundation (NEF) subjected to external excitation. Two distinct types of PFG shallow shells, characterized by even and uneven porosity distribution along the thickness direction, are considered in the research. In order to model the stiffeners, Lekhnitskii's smeared stiffeners technique is implemented. With the stress function and first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), the nonlinear model of the oblique stiffened shallow shells is established. The strain-displacement relationships for the system are derived via the FSDT and utilization of the von-Kármán's geometric assumptions. To discretize the nonlinear governing equations, the Galerkin method is employed. The model such developed allows analysis of the effects of the stiffeners with various angles as desired, in addition to the quantitative investigation on the influence of the surrounding nonlinear elastic foundations. To numerically solve the problem of vibrations, the 4th-order P-T method is used, as this method, known for its enhanced accuracy and reliability, proves to be an effective choice. The validation of the present research findings includes a comprehensive comparison with outcomes documented in existing literature. Additionally, a comparative analysis of the numerical results against those obtained using the 4th Runge-Kutta method is performed. The impact of stiffeners with varying angles and material parameters on the vibration characteristics of the present system is also explored. The researchers and engineers working in this field may use the results of this study as benchmarks in their design and research for the considered shell systems.

A Study on the Large Deformation of Silicon Rubber Gasket with Hollow Circular Section (실리콘 중공 가스켓의 대변형에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the large deformation of hollow silicon rubber gasket is treated. The frictional contact occurs between groove and the outer part of hollow gasket, and the frictional self-contact exists in the inner parts of hollow gasket. The silicon rubber has the nonlinear elastic behavior and its material property is approximately incompressible. Hence, the stress analysis requires an existence of a strain energy function, which is usually defined in terms of invariants or stretch ratio such as generalized Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden model. Considering large compressive deformation and friction, Mooney-Rivlin 3rd model and Coulomb's friction model are assumed. The numerical analysis is obtained by the commercial finite element program MARC. But, due to large deformation, the elements degenerate in the inner parts of hollow gasket. This means that the analysis of subsequent increments is carried out with a very poor mesh. In order to continue the analysis with a sufficient accuracy, it is necessary to use new finite element modeling by remesh. Experiments are also performed to show the validity of present method. As a conclusion, numerical results by this research have good agreements with experiments.

Structural Deformation and Flow Analysis for Designing Air Plate of a Fuel Cell (구조 변형을 고려한 연료전지 공기판의 유동 해석)

  • In this paper, structural analysis is performed to investigate the deformation of porous media in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Structural deformation of air plate of the fuel cell causes the change in configuration and cross sectional area of the channel. The distributions of mass flow rate and pressure are major factors to decide the performance of a PEMFC. These factors are affected by channel configuration of air plate. Two kinds of numerical air plate models are suggested for flow analyses. Deformed porous media and undeformed porous media are considered for the two models. The Numerical flow analysis results between deformed porous media and undeformed porous media have some discrepancy in pressure distribution. The pressure and velocity distribution under a working condition are numerically calculated to predict the performance of the air plates. Pressure and velocity distributions are compared for two models. It is shown that structural deformation makes difference in flow analysis results.

  • This research examined an immediate loading capable of providing a masticatory function and financial affordability while satisfying every requirement of a useful immediate loading. In this research, numerical value analysis was performed on couple-type posterior teeth implants developed by making up for the problems of extant implants. As a result of examining the effects of external impacts on extant implants and their deformation, relatively lager deformations separated from a molar were found concerning molar deformation implant with the maximum deformation level being approximately 1.657mm. In this research, the improved implant showed much improvement in terms of impact analysis in its deformation dispersion status after unloading the impulsive load from a punch. As for the case of hepf, about 1.657mm occurred but the improved model showed about 0.9217mm, exhibiting 55.6% advancement.

  • The frame for automotive assembly can be deformed and remained on the residual stress due to high temperature thermal attacks when in welding. The frame deformation can be made to problems when in assembly with body and the residual stress can affect the negative effect on durability performance of the automobile. In order to analyze the frame deformation, the simplified test frame which had the similar shape (form) of the real automotive frame was fabricated. The contactless optical 3D scanner was used for the shape difference measurement of the frame between before and after the welding. The FE-model of the test frame was composed and the heat transfer and thermal stress simulation were performed. The simulated results were compared with the measured results for the reference of the frame design. The deformation shape of the frame by simulation was in good agreement with that by the experimental measurement.

An efficient and simple higher order shear deformation theory for bending analysis of composite plates under various boundary conditions

  • In this study, the bending and dynamic behaviors of laminated composite plates is examined by using a refined shear deformation theory and developed for a bending analysis of orthotropic laminated composite plates under various boundary conditions. The displacement field of the present theory is chosen based on nonlinear variations in the in-plane displacements through the thickness of the plate. By dividing the transverse displacement into the bending and shear parts and making further assumptions, the number of unknowns and equations of motion of the present theory is reduced and hence makes them simple to use. In the analysis, the equation of motion for simply supported thick laminated rectangular plates is obtained through the use of Hamilton's principle. Numerical results for the bending and dynamic behaviors of antisymmetric cross-ply laminated plate under various boundary conditions are presented. The validity of the present solution is demonstrated by comparison with solutions available in the literature. Numerical results show that the present theory can archive accuracy comparable to the existing higher order shear deformation theories that contain more number of unknowns.

Seismic Behavior and Recentering Capability Evaluation of Concentrically Braced Frame Structures using Superelastic Shape Alloy Active Control Bracing System (초탄성 형상기억합금 능동제어 가새시스템을 이용한 중심가새프레임 구조물의 지진거동 및 복원성능 평가)

  • The researches related to active control systems utilizing superelastic shape memory alloys (SMA) have been recently conducted to reduce critical damage due to lateral deformation after severe earthquakes. Although Superelastic SMAs undergo considerable inelastic deformation, they can return to original conditions without heat treatment only after stress removal. We can expect the mitigation of residual deformation owing to inherent recentering characteristics when these smart materials are installed at the part where large deformation is likely to occur. Therefore, the primary purpose of this research is to develop concentrically braced frames (CBFs) with superelastic SMA bracing systems and to evaluate the seismic performance of such frame structures. In order to investigate the inter-story drift response of CBF structures, 3- and 6-story buildings were design according to current design specifications, and then nonlinear time-history analyses were performed on numerical 2D frame models. Based on the numerical analysis results, it can be comparatively verified that the CBFs with superelastic SMA bracing systems have more structural advantages in terms of energy dissipation and recentering behavior than those with conventional steel bracing systems.
